Breast Cancer Haven, London wins‘Healing Spaces Award’

Sunand Prasad, President of RIBA, presented theBritish Holistic Medical Association (BHMA), HealingSpaces Award on 17 April. The first prize of £2000went to the Breast Cancer Haven, which is a daycentre that delivers a free program of care tocomplement and enhance conventional breasttreatment.
The award is for buildings that best reflect thepart played by architecture, interior design, andthe use of sound, light, colour, or new ways of usinghealthcare space creatively. Entries came fromgeneral practices, hospices, hospitals, cancer careunits, complementary medicine clinics, even amortuary!
The 12 finalists were quite different and re-flected some beautiful spaces to work in forpractitioners and for patients to receive care. Twointernational entrants were gardens from the USAthat recognised the importance of nature infacilitating healing of the sick and gave opportu-nities to relax and socialise. The small projectsaward of £500 went to the Kai Clinic, where an oldstoreroom was converted into an area for twopractitioners to treat up to six patients simulta-

neously. It created a comfortable warm light spaceusing colours texture and sound to great effect.
There was a special mention for the travellinghomeopathic collective, which features at festivalsincluding Glastonbury UK. What an innovative wayto deliver healthcare!
There was a general practice finalist form theDolphin Practice in Haywards Heath, Sussex UK,where the practice nurse, also an artist, involved allof the staff when choosing the colours for theinternal decoration of the new purpose-built cen-tre. They have an arts-in-healthcare space for art,music and poetry for patients and staff to enjoy.
The competition was part of the BHMA 25thanniversary conference medicine as if peoplematter: patients, practitioners and places. Profes-sor David Peters, the chairman, said ‘the award isan opportunity to show what has been achievedacross the country in creating healing spaces. Ahealthy environment really does produce healthypeople and that includes practitioners as well aspatients.’
