The first prize of £2000 went to the Breast Cancer Haven, which is a day centre that delivers a free program of care to complement and enhance conventional breast treatment. The award is for buildings that best reflect the part played by architecture, interior design, and the use of sound, light, colour, or new ways of using healthcare space creatively. Entries came from general practices, hospices, hospitals, cancer care units, complementary medicine clinics, even a mortuary! The 12 finalists were quite different and re- flected some beautiful spaces to work in for practitioners and for patients to receive care. Two international entrants were gardens from the USA that recognised the importance of nature in facilitating healing of the sick and gave opportu- nities to relax and socialise. The small projects award of £500 went to the Kai Clinic, where an old storeroom was converted into an area for two practitioners to treat up to six patients simulta- neously. It created a comfortable warm light space using colours texture and sound to great effect. There was a special mention for the travelling homeopathic collective, which features at festivals including Glastonbury UK. What an innovative way to deliver healthcare! There was a general practice finalist form the Dolphin Practice in Haywards Heath, Sussex UK, where the practice nurse, also an artist, involved all of the staff when choosing the colours for the internal decoration of the new purpose-built cen- tre. They have an arts-in-healthcare space for art, music and poetry for patients and staff to enjoy. The competition was part of the BHMA 25th anniversary conference medicine as if people matter: patients, practitioners and places. Profes- sor David Peters, the chairman, said ‘the award is an opportunity to show what has been achieved across the country in creating healing spaces. A healthy environment really does produce healthy people and that includes practitioners as well as patients.’ For more information about the BHMA or becoming a member of the BHMA, contact: www.bhma.org.
