Saturday, August 24, we will have a morning workshop for anyone interested to come and learn more about leader-ship development in the church. We will discuss patterns in congregational development, dynamics of groups, group size, and interpersonal relationships, organizing and lead-ing for ministry, the life cycles of ministries and parishes, service on the vestry and in leading ministries. Anyone who is interested, please contact the church office to sign up. We hope that ministry leaders and anyone interested in ministry leadership, including vestry, will join us for this opportunity to be better equipped for leadership in this place. The better equipped, the more faithful we will be to God in our mission.

Yours in Christ,

Dear Friends in Christ, Each year I serve in ordained ministry, I become increasingly convinced of the importance of leadership in the church. Part of this is because we are a volunteer organization, so the motivations are different from the business world, and the training and experience levels are different. Part of this also is because the Christian Faith is not a commodity to be sold, but a set of relationships to be experienced. Our task is not simply good production on Sunday morning, our mission is about a deeper relationship with God in Christ, and deeper relationships with each other in Christ. Growth in those relationships requires time and personal connection. Effectively inviting people into these relationships requires commitment and initiative. All of this is the basic stuff of leadership in the church. Without good and godly leadership in the church, we drift, and our vitality fades, and we fail at our mission. With a large portion of the parish involved in leadership behaviors—worship, prayer, relationships, service—we will discover God’s presence and more more and more, and the disciples we grow will grow more disciples. Our mission thrives with good and godly leadership.

This is a mobile food pantry program that we will host on the first Tuesday of each month for those in need of food and spiritual nourishment. The only cost of this ministry is your time - 4 hours a month from 9:30 am to 1:30. Volunteers are needed to: ¨ Welcome each family that comes to receive food ¨ Register those in need into the program ¨ Meet with the families to share the love of Christ through listening and prayer ¨ Distribute the 22 lb boxes from the truck ¨ Provide a light lunch for the volunteers

Opportunities to serve are not limited to Tuesdays - we will also need help each month for a few hours to promote the ministry (put up signs/ hand out fliers etc) to help grow the ministry. This is an opportunity for each of us to be a true disciple of Jesus Christ. You may contact any of the following for more information:

Foyer Groups It is time again to begin Foyer Groups (also known as small group dinners) for the next season – August through December. If you are not familiar with Foyer Groups – it is regular gathering of fellow parishioners to share in a meal, conversation and build relationships. Foyer Groups have been part of our Episcopal tradition since WWII in the 1940’s when Churches in England were demolished and believers wanted to gather and maintain their collective Christian spirit, friendships, and relationships. The link provides Foyer Group background, its purpose, how Foyer Groups align with SPSP Vision and Mission and some of the specifics of he forming the groups and how they operate. Below are some comments from the past Foyer Group participants.

“We thoroughly enjoyed our time in our Foyer Group. It was wonderful to grow our community in the church and make new friendships along the way. We loved that our group was diverse in age, backgrounds and time at the church. The blend of new and experienced members, young and old made this a truly unique experience. As new members of the church this was an

invaluable experience in growing our fellowship. I love that we walk into church and have a group of friends, it makes it feel even more like home! It was great to commune in each other’s homes. With both of us working full time combined with lengthy commutes, we loved that this was a doable commitment. I would encourage any members new or old to participate in this experience.”

“I never thought that our Foyer Group would have created an opportunity to grow as Christians and as friends, like the way that our Foyer Group has grown. Every month, we ate together, played games, brought our children together and laughed together. The five other couples that we connected with have given us so much this past year: Friendship, Laughter, Grace and an opportunity to talk about God. I honestly can say that these couples are more than friends; they are family now, and we are beyond thankful that God brought us together. With His help, we have created a circle of love, trust and ongoing support for one another. For us, 2018 was an amazing year because of our Foyers Group and all that it brought our family.”

“I would like to say again that I thoroughly enjoyed our times together, and it's truly lovely to have begun to form relationships with a small group. I'd like to add again that I personally would love to stay with the same group for an entire year. I would love the opportunity to get to know everyone in the group better and have more time to share with them. Thank you for your work in getting all of this arranged!”

“We had a wonderful variety of age groups including a newly married young couple, a family, a couple with two young children, a single person, empty nesters, and the two of us older ones. Lively conversation ranged from church music, the whys of incense, Sunday school, travel, to work and hobby experiences, all shared with lots of laughter. Sharing food led to lively talk about recipes, cooking, and places to eat in our area. We all had so much fun that we discussed getting together again......and we will. Opening your home for Foyers opens your heart to others. Foyers is a great way to build Church community.”

If you are interested in participating in this next Foyer Group season from August through December, please contact Tom Martin, [email protected], or 678-427-0416. We would like your indications of interest or questions by 8/15/19.

YOUTH MINISTRY | Grades 6th – 12th

How We Are Growing Disciples of Jesus Christ

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” -Jesus The Gospel of John 10:10

We’re not sure which is harder, being a teenager or being the parent of a teenager. Our youth ministry is here to help you not just survive but thrive during these precious years. Our philosophy is simple; life is better when we are more closely connected with God and each other. Jesus Christ makes that life possible, and our youth ministry is designed to help youth and families like you dive deeper in your relationships with God and each other. Here is a little overview and some simple steps to help you discover the ways we are growing disciples among our youth and families. 1. WORSHIP God as a Family | Sat. 5:30pm, Sun. 8am & 10:30 We have three weekly worship services which are the backbone of our expression of faith and doing life together as Christians. We invite you and your family to worship with us throughout the church year as we worship God, respond to Scripture, pray, and celebrate communion to-gether. We also have youth involved in worship as acolytes, readers, youth choir, and ushers. 2. CONNECT with God & Each Other| Sun. 9am – 10:15am CONNECT is our primary small group program for youth in grades 6th through 12th which meets on Sunday mornings during the school year from 9:00am to 10:15am. A CONNECT Group is a weekly gathering of 3-5 youth and an adult leader for the purpose of developing authentic faith in Jesus Christ and deepening their relationships with God and each other. Although they are small, our CONNECT Groups have a big impact in young people’s lives. CONNECT will help students connect with God and each other through fun games, Bible dis-cussion, and prayer. Our curriculum introduces students to discussions on the Sunday lection-ary reading, the Catechism, life topics, and classic Christian books like C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce. CONNECT is the foundation for our Confirmation program as well.

3. GO on a Youth Trip or Retreat Youth Trips and Retreats are an important part of how we grow disciples of Jesus Christ among our youth. One hour a week on Sundays is not a sufficient amount of time to develop lasting relationships and dive deep in your faith. That’s why our missions and trips are uniquely designed to help youth connect with God and each other in life-changing ways. Students who attend our trips are more connected to the youth communi-ty and more likely to get involved in our regular youth programming throughout the year. These trips are so important we include them as an integral part of our Confirmation preparation experience.

2020 Youth Trips Winter Retreat 1.17-20

H.S. Mission Trip 6.20-26 M.S. Beach Trip SSI 7.5-9

These dates may be subject to change since we are still in the planning phase. 4. LEAD as a Student Leader Student leaders can have a significant impact on their family, friends, school, and community. LEAD is our Sunday evening core group to invest in and develop our student leaders who are motivated to love and lead like Jesus and have an impact on this world. LEAD students will get special opportunities for fun and fellowship as well as learning to lead games, announcements, and more for CONNECT. We are always looking for passionate students who want to grow in their relationship with God and have an impact on those around them. Students must apply and be accepted to participate. Ask our Youth Minister how you can become a LEAD student. Middle School meets 5-6:30 and High School meets from 6-7:30pm. Parents help provide dinner from 6-6:30pm. Want to Learn More? If you are interested in learning more, then we invite you to connect with our Youth Minis-ter, Matt Martin, over email, phone, or a cup of coffee. We also invite you to be our guest on Sunday morning where you can meet our youth minister and key leaders as you check out our CONNECT program for middle and high school students.
