We are delighted to welcome you to the University of Surrey Doctoral College Conference 2018 - the flagship event for the University's postgraduate and early career researchers.

This year's theme is Breaking New Ground, focusing on the ground-breaking research taking place at Surrey. We have an exciting programme of keynote speakers, who will talk about how they are breaking new ground in their respective fields. There are presentations and posters from PGRs and ECRs from all three faculties of the University, including premium presentations and posters from those researchers whose abstracts received the highest ratings.

We are delighted to welcome international participants from the Santander Universities Network. Thanks to the generous support of Santander, 15 PhD students have been selected to contribute to the conference. We would like to thank Santander for their support and welcome these students to Surrey.

We also have lots going on outside the lecture theatre. There are two workshops each day, and you can visit our research fair in the foyer. If you haven't signed up for the conference dinner, check at the registration desk for last minute availability. There is no need to book for our wine reception, plus you can cheer

on participants in our Elevator Pitch Competition. And you can join Yaron Shyldkrot for his unique theatre performance Keep in the Dark (see page 15).

Finally, we must thank the many individuals and organisations who have helped us to organise this conference. We are especially grateful to the Doctoral College team for their support, encouragement and funding. And, of course, we thank you for attending and showing your support for Surrey's research community. We hope you find the conference interesting, engaging and ground-breaking. Don’t forget to fill in a feedback form to let us know what you thought!

KEEP IN THE DARK

3 & 4 July: Ivy Arts Centre

Keep in the Dark is an evening of two performances held in complete darkness.

• Overcast is an intimate performance for four people at a time, that explores light, perception and mood when we can barely see.

• Certain Ways is a sonic journey performed in total darkness guided by robotic voices.

Devised by University of Surrey researcher Yaron Shyldkrot, the performances are the final showings resulting from his practice based PhD that explores uncertainty and performance in the dark.

Please be aware that both performances contain moments of total darkness.

Booking required. Sign up at the conference registration desk or visit: gsauk.org/events/keep-dark-overcast-and-certain-ways

NETWORKING FOR RESEARCH
