A Look Back Fall Walks

F all has officially arrived! This is my favorite season for many reasons. I love the cooler more

comfortable temperatures, the fall colors, the smell of outdoor backyard fire pits and the excitement of the holidays just around the corner. Over the summer months I shared with you 10 Healthy Benefits of Walking for Seniors. This is the time of year to get out for a walk and enjoy the fresh air. My plan in October is to take longer evening walks with my dog Dexter, and I encourage you all to take advantage of getting out and enjoying the outdoors while the temperatures are still nice!

Chris Ruzicka,

Manager

F all has already begun. The official first day of fall for this year was September 22nd. I get excited about fall because the leaves get colorful and

crunchy. I also love to celebrate Halloween with my friends and family. We usually organize a Halloween party on the weekend at one of our houses, and celebrate all night long. Last year I was a cop, and my husband, Binod was dressed up as the gangster Al Capone. We haven’t picked out our Halloween costume for this year yet. We need to come up with a couples themed Halloween costume soon.

October is very special for Nepalese people (those who are from Nepal). We celebrate one of our biggest and longest festivals, Dashain, in October. It is traditionally celebrated for two weeks. The festival starts on the 16th of October and ends on the 24th. We usually celebrate this festival by praying and worshipping the Goddess Durga, the Goddess of Victory. Dashain is a time for family reunions, exchange of gifts and blessings, and elaborate pujas. For outdoor activity, we usually fly kites and play cards back home. The Goddess Durga has many names. Ambika is also one of her names which my father picked out for me. Now you all know the meaning of my name. This year, my husband Binod, and I will be celebrating this festival with our family and friends here in Cedar Rapids.

Good Nutrition

I t seems like all I get to do is talk to you about cold and flu. Those who want flu shots will receive them at our flu clinic October 1st or from

their physicians. We’re going to go in a different direction now. We have talked about hand washing, sanitizing, and overall good hygiene. Now let’s add good nutrition to the mix. Eating a balanced diet from all the major food groups along with a good multi-vitamin can make a real difference in our over-all fight to stay healthy. Drink your orange juice and milk. Hydrate your bodies with adequate fluids. Eat your greens, breads, and cereals. Don’t forget to add some dairy; say cheese, please! Your body is a finely tuned machine and will run the best when fueled with the right nutrients. Stressing one system in our body opens the door to our total immune system and makes us more vulnerable to any invading organism passing by. Do your part, eat wise, eat healthy and above all stay well.

Fall Fun

F all is finally here! I’m excited to go to the apple orchard and pumpkin patch this fall. Kari has a bunch of exciting activities on the calendar relating to the

season, I am looking forward to our Halloween party at the end of the month and the magician! Keep in mind the Snack and Learn about organization. I need some helpful tips and I’m sure you could use one too. Thank you for all who purchased t-shirts and participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. All of your support is greatly appreciated. As a Halloween favor, I have some goodie boxes in my office for your doctor when you go to an appointment. Stop by my office before you leave for the doctor and I will give you a goodie box for you to give you to give to your doctor or nurse. This is just a little thank you from you and Garnett Place for all they do for your healthcare. We appreciate them keeping you happy and healthy. I am a mentor in the Big Brother Big Sister program, my Little Sister and I have been matched for one year now. We just celebrated all of the one year matches at Big Brother Big Sister with an ice cream and game party. It has been a great year, we have gone Trick or Treating, to the library, made homemade Valentine’s Day cards, cooked dinner at my house, and I even took her to a sit down restaurant for her first time. Now Applebee’s is her favorite restaurant. Good thing that is one of my favorite restaurants too.

D ot loves to gamble and enjoyed traveling all across the state of Iowa to different

casinos in her younger years. She loves the slot machines and the buffets even more. It had always been Dot’s dream to travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, to go to casinos there. We created a mini Las Vegas at Riverside Casino for her. She had VIP treatment with special signs, necklaces and jewelry. One of our Health Aides gave Dot and her family complimentary chauffeur service to Riverside Casino. Dot had mostly good luck at the slots and found her rhythm with the slot buttons. They had a wonderful lunch at the buffet and she enjoyed the vast array of des-serts.

October is our month

O ctober is my favorite month. Not only is it my birthday month, but also my anniversary month. Spenser and I are celebrating six

years of marriage on the 13th. October is also Steve’s (our transportation specialists) birth month (sorry for tattling on you Steve!). Plus, it’s also Rachel’s (activity assistant) son’s birth month.

Also, did you know October is the month I got hired here at Garnett Place? I can’t believe these three years have flown by this fast! October is a very celebratory month for Life Enrichment.

In another exciting piece of news, our new activity assistant Kelsie has started. She’ll be here a few days a week and on the weekends to keep things exciting for you. She recently graduated from the University of Iowa and she’s very excited to be here.

Don’t forget that your absentee ballot request for the General Election (November 6) must be mailed by October 24th (or turned into their office before the 27th). If you still need an absentee request form, please speak with me. If you choose not to do an absentee vote, we will be using the bus to take residents to our polling location the day of. Please note the bus has a limited number of seats, so plan ahead.

We’ll have other new faces around here in October. Pink Alpaca Farms will be brining

over baby chickens, rabbits, and kittens on the 9th!

Fall and Winter Menus

Hello Garnett Place residents, it has been a month and a half since I have joined you all here. It’s been a pleasure to start getting to know some of you. Since starting, my two oldest daughters have started school and are loving it. My youngest stays home and enjoys his time with his mom. My oldest daughter, Kylee, found out this week she has to wear glasses, she is trying to get used to.

With summer behind us and the arrival of fall. I have rolled out the new fall and winter menus. This menu will start October 1st. There are a lot of new items so please give them a try, and please let me know what you think. If you ever have any questions, feel free to stop me and ask. I looking forward to hearing what you all think about the new menu. Thanks,

Jeremy Curl

Culinary Coordinator

12 weeks until the year end

O ctober is here. That means only 12 weeks until the end of the year. As nights get cooler and you start turning your furnaces on, let me

know right away if you notice anything that isn’t working properly. Also, the walking trail behind the 208 building will be finished soon. We have to do some drainage work and then complete the final portion of the new sidewalk. The water line project in the 202 building will also be completed soon. Work is progressing nicely we will try to complete the project with as little impact to residents as possible. I hope you all have a great month.

Dare to Dream Thank You

T ownsquare proudly donated radio advertising time in the weeks prior to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s asking the community to join the Garnett Gems team. We thank them for their generous donation. We wanted to take a special moment to recognize this for this fantastic partnership.

D elores is a retired school teacher, and her favorite book to read to the school kids was, To Kill A Mocking Bird. She taught third grade for many years and read the book countless times. It was her dream to see the play To Kill a

Mocking Bird. Since it is an older play, it doesn’t come to the Cedar Rapids area frequently. For two weeks only, the Giving Tree Theatre in Marion, Iowa was having showings. Resident Assistant (RA)Danielle was eager to take her to see her favorite book come to life. Garnett Place made Delores’ Dream Come True by taking her to see this play. Delores, her niece Paulette, and RA, Danielle, had front row seats. Delores was able to see the words from the book she read so many times right in front of her eyes. After the play the cast personally spoke with Dolores, who gave the most wonderful reviews.

H ealthcare Coordinator, Lee Thoma RN has served the residents of Garnett Place for 10 years this October. Last year, he was named One of the Top 100 Nurses in Iowa. He is the heartbeat of excellent care and superior service because of his dedication to

residents and their families. Lee knows the value of compassionate care firsthand. He is constantly considering the views and opinions of those he cares for and offers effortless empathy at every juncture. When a senior makes the decision to move to a Retirement Living Community the experience can be filled with anxiety, even in the most positive situations. It is our pleasure to guide these hesitant individuals to Lee and watch as he introduces a wave of calm and trust into their decision making. His reassuring personality eases our residents’ worries and assure them that they are his number one priority. Words that mean little coming from anyone else, all of a sudden turn to gold when he speaks them because he backs them up with his actions. Residents look to Lee as not only a resource and advocate, but also as a friend. If you walk into Garnett Place on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, you will most likely find Lee roaming the hallways sharing a joke and visiting with residents’ family members. He sets an unparalleled example for his staff with his willingness to go the extra mile and bend over backwards to ensure a resident’s needs are met. And while his residents needs are number one, his staff is a close second. To put it simply, Lee is an exceptional nurse, an exceptional person, and Garnett Place is lucky to have him.

Congrats on 10 years Lee!
