On High Holy Days, we inventory the deeds of our lives and imagine God sitting in judgment. We are asked, in all candor, to evaluate ourselves, and to do so without what some call ‘alibiology,’ finding excuses for our shortcomings. In order to measure ourselves, we should not only recall our deeds, in addition we must also measure ourselves in the light of what God requires of us.

What is there in Judaism that enables us to size up the quality of our daily existence? There are many ways to delineate the components of our Jewish heritage. One way is through a reference to what might be called - by Rabbi Samuel Silver - the three B's.

The first 'B' is Belief. A true Jew believes that the world was not something, which by happenstance occurred. A shoe points to a cobbler; a garment points to a tailor; a painting points to an artist, and the intricacies of the universe point to a Creator. As Jews, we also believe that beyond all that we hold and behold, all that we see and sense is the invisible Creator whom we call Echad... the one and only God. A corollary to our view that there is but one God is the conviction that under that "Echad" there is another Echad, another unity, the human family. We believe that God has implanted within us a seismographic device called our Conscience which points to propriety. God has given us not only the guide to goodness, also the freedom to ignore it. That free will of ours is what makes us human.

The second 'B' is to Belong. It is not enough to accept a credo, a set of beliefs in order for society to activate important ideas and apply them to morally uplift. We must attach ourselves to agencies that effectuate them. For that purpose, we should become members of synagogues and of other organizations committed to the broadening of social good and welfare. It is true that some people nurture beliefs, but don't join the instrumentalities which promote them. There are some who scoff at what they called organized religion. People harbor the notion that social good can be brought about without institutional efforts. Some Jews will tell you that they are Jews at heart - cardiac Jews. Other Jews are linked through Jewish foods - gastronomic Jews. On the High Holy Days, we should ponder the question of whether the justice our world needs, the combating of prejudice and hatred and terrorism can be accomplished without our vigorous support of organizations which are committed to their realization.

It is also not enough to believe and belong. We must recognize that these convictions and affiliations must also impel us to Behave. The acid test of our earnestness and our willingness to live up to the imperatives of our heritage is to be seen in our conduct. We must do justly, as the prophet Micah reminds us.

We call it the High Holy Days because during this period we must ascend to a loftier level than the everyday one and seek to appraise our behavior. We are prone to praise ourselves but appraising ourselves is a higher demand. We call them High Holy Days because in Judaism the concept of "holy" refers not only to liturgy and to ceremonies, it refers to the way we comport ourselves.

To be Jewish is to Believe, to Belong and to Behave. May the coming New Year 5780 be one of genuine spiritual uplift.

L’shana tova tikateivu v’tikchateimu, may we be written & sealed for only good

The New Year for Temple Judea (2019-2020) began officially on July 1, 2019. The Jewish New Year (5780) begins with Rosh Hashanah on September 29/30. If you haven’t done so already, kindly pay your synagogue dues now and complete the High Holy Day Services Honor Request Form which is used to assign all Aliyot, English readings and other Honors.

While we will certainly be busy at Temple Judea at this time of year, there is another important event occurring later this month that draws our attention – national elections are being held in our beloved Israel on September 17th.

Wait a second, weren’t Israeli national elections just held in April 2019? Indeed they were! However, Israel’s government uses a parliamentary system which is different from the arrangement in the U.S. Israel’s national legislature, the Knesset, has 120 seats and Israelis vote for political parties (of which there are more than 50) rather than for individual politicians. No single party in Israel’s history since 1948 has achieved a majority (61 seats). As such, “coalitions” of parties are required to achieve this threshold. This past Spring, the coalition led by Bibi Netanyahu’s Likud party had 60 seats, falling one vote short, and new elections were necessary.

A few of the leading parties in the Sept. 17th election are:

Likud: led by Bibi Netanyahu, equivocates re a two-state solution, equivocates re drafting Haredi (Orthodox) youth, opposes Iran nuclear deal.

Blue & White: led by past IDF chief of staff Benny Gantz, three other top generals and TV host Yair Lapid; supports two-state solution, drafting Haredi youth, and opposes Iran deal.

Yemina - United Right: led by female former Minister of Justice MK Ayelet Shaked, high-tech businessman MK Naftali Bennett, and Rafi Peretz with similar policies as Likud.

Benjamin (Bibi) Netanyahu has been prime minister of Israel for more than 13 years. In July 2019, he passed David Ben-Gurion as the longest serving Prime Minister of Israel in history. He is known throughout the world - and engenders strong feelings among Israelis – he is either loved or hated. Most political experts claim this election is exclusively about Bibi – keep him or retire him. The New Year will indeed be getting off to an interesting start!

L’shana Tova Tikatevu, wishing you a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.

HELP BUILD OUR FUTURE An easy way is to make a charitable gift through your

will. Simply use these words in drafting your will: “I give and bequeath unto Temple Judea, a nonprofit corporation, that is recognized as exempt from tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, ID# 95-2503535 the sum of $____ to be used for general purposes.” If you don’t wish to specify an amount, you may wish to state the amount as a percentage of your estate. Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime and you’re able to modify your bequest should circumstances change. Please let us know if we can be of assistance to you or your advisors.

Judaism & the Internet

The August 7th breakfast achieved a record attendance for 2019. The large crowd heard Dr. Mark Biederman speak about his family’s history and his search for lost gold. His father buried gold coins in their backyard in Poland prior to being deported by the Nazis to concentration camps. Dr. Biederman is a superior story teller and he captivated the audience. While the value of the gold coins was significant, though not huge, his description of his efforts to uncover his family’s history and the efforts of Polish authorities to avoid returning the coins was eye-opening.

The September 4th breakfast should be a Classic. The featured speaker is home-grown talent, our own Rabbi Dennis Linson. He will speak about current and potential impact on Jewish law of modernity and hi-tech developments like The Internet have on the practice of Judaism. Here is something to think about: If you watch a live broadcast of a morning service on The Internet that has 9 people in attendance, do you increase the “official” number to 10 and thereby make a Minyan? There are many ways technology advances (including The Internet) have the potential to alter the practice of Judaism right now and in the future. Attend and learn more about this very timely topic.

Temple Judea Breakfast Club events begin at 10:00 AM in our social hall. This menu will be hearty including: handmade lox and cream cheese spread (with lots of lox), eggs, tasty Danish, coffee & tea.

These breakfast gatherings provide a magnificent opportunity to be entertained, mingle with your friends, meet new people, and have a delicious meal. All this is yours for $5. Women and men are cordially invited to attend. We hope to see you and bring a guest or two.

QUOTE: Forgive your neighbors [their] transgressions, and then when you pray, your sins will be forgiven. - Ben Sira 28:2

COMMENT: This teaching is not based so much on reward, as it is on transformation. When you do what it takes to forgive another person’s trespasses against you, you change as a person. You become more empathic, more understanding of human flaws – in short, easier to forgive.

RELIGIOUS COMMITTEE

Usually by this time we are very close to the High Holy Days, but this year the holidays are still almost a month away. However, our clergy are already preparing meaningful and inspirational services. What it means for us, your Religious Committee, is that we are still planning and organizing for the holidays. Last month you should have received our annual High Holy Day questionnaire re honors at our services. Your completion and return of this form helps us greatly in distributing all the ark opening, English reading and Aliyah honors. We want to know what honor you would like and when, so that we can do our best to accommodate your request. If you have not already returned this form to the office, please do so before September 5 so we have enough time to do our planning and to personally contact you before the High Holy Days begin. Although Rosh Hashanah does not arrive until the evening of September 29, the High Holy Day season begins with Selichot which is on Saturday evening, September 21. Please join us at 7:00 pm for a meaning-ful program followed by our Selichot service, which prepares us for the upcoming High Holy Days. You will not want to miss our delicious annual Rosh Hashanah Seder lovingly prepared by our Rebbetzen, Sima Linson. If you have been to one in the past you know how special it is. If you have never attended, be sure to come and see what it is all about. You’ll be glad you did. This year following the Seder lunch we will have a short Tashlich ceremony on the Temple grounds. This ceremony is where we symbolically cast away our sins (represented by bread) onto the water. Please join us for this new addition to our High Holy Day programming. Planning ahead into October please joins us for a Break the Fast meal at the conclusion of Yom Kippur on October 9 and a Sukkot Shabbat luncheon in the Sukkah on October 19. You will get more information on these in our October Bulletin. We wish all of you a happy, healthy and sweet new year. We look forward to seeing you at Temple. L’Shana tovah tikateivu,

Men’s Club Humor by Arnold Miller

Three good friends, Moe, Larry and Curly are having a delicious lunch together at a fine restaurant when Larry turns to his buddies with a big frown on his face and says, “Shame on us; we are all very over-weight and will probably die at an early age.”

Moe, the practical one, says “No problem; we’ll join a gym, exercise daily & go on a diet.” They all agree.

Five years later they are at Curly’s wonderful birth-day party. It is magnificent with the finest food and drinks. As they are about to begin the meal, Larry orders the waiter to take the food back and bring three salads and three glasses of seltzer.

Many, many years pass during which each of the friends have excellent lives - with much joy and nachas. One day while the three are driving to the gym - their car gets hit by a big truck and sadly, they are all killed.

The next day, Moe suddenly sees a bright light and G-d’s friendly voice calls to him, “Greetings, you are now in Heaven. Say hello to your friends, Larry and Curly. Walk around and explore.” The three best friends hug each other and then enter the magnificent dining room.

Moe and Curly pile their plates high while Larry has another big frown on his face and says to his pals, “If Moe hadn’t enrolled us in a gym and put us on a diet, we would have been here 50 years ago.”

Quotations & Commentary on Repentance & Forgiveness

QUOTE: If [a person] were able to survey at a glance all he has done in the course of his life, what would he feel? He would be terrified at the extent of his own power. –Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

COMMENT: Be judicious today in using your power. Treat every person as if they were fragile and you could hurt them or help them. They are. And you can. – Rabbi Debra Orenstein

QUOTE: The impulse to do evil is at first like a passer-by, then like a lodger, and finally like the master of the house.—Talmud Sukkah 52b

COMMENT: What habits have taken up residence this year—welcome or unwelcome, good or harmful? Is there something running you that you need to master? – Rabbi Debra Orenstein

QUOTE: No sin is so light that it may be overlooked. No sin is so heavy that it may not be repented of. –Moses Ibn Ezra

COMMENT: Today, address the “little things.” If it’s possible to gain control over something, then do. – Rabbi Debra Orenstein

QUOTE: No sin is so light that it may be overlooked. No sin is so heavy that it may not be repented of. –Moses Ibn Ezra (Yes, it’s the same quote as above!)

COMMENT: Today, allow yourself to imagine your biggest regret lifted from you. No matter how big, old, engrained, known, or unchangeable an offense might be, it can still be sincerely repented of – and healed. – Rabbi Debra Orenstein

QUOTE: Better open rebuke than hidden love. –Proverbs 27:5

COMMENT: It’s hard to hear that someone is dissatisfied with us, but consider that it is usually an act of friendship and love when someone is honest enough to tell you where s/he believes you have gone wrong. Consider the faith that person shows in you – in your ability to listen, in your openness, in your power to change, and in your desire to be truly and deeply good. If someone reproves you, don’t lose the opportunity. –Rabbi Debra Orenstein
