Bread Not Bomb is the need of the hour

• Society comprises two classes: those who have more food than appetite,

and those who have more appetite than food.

36 million people die each year as a direct or indirect result of poor

nutrition, which is more than 1 death each second. 850 million people

worldwide were undernourished in 1999 to 2005. It is estimated that the

USSR (now defunct) had approximately 39,000 nuclear weapons stockpiled

at the time of its collapse, and after the collapse a debate on the need to have

‘bread, not bomb’ began throughout the world. This was so because nuclear

arsenals had failed to protect fundamental human needs.

This proved to the world that BREAD NOT BOMB IS THE NEED OF

THE HOUR but still today the urge to be superior remains in the heart of

people. Millions of dollars are spent each day on Weapons, Bombs, Fighter

planes, Helicopters, Missiles, Drones, Submarines, Military, Navy and Air

Force. One of the major causes of poverty, unemployment, denial of

fundamental human rights and access to resources, lawlessness, failure of

governance and institutions in Pakistan is illegal and unconstitutional control

of military and dictatorial regimes in Pakistan. These regimes spent the

major portion of GDP and the budget on militarization and nuclearization,

which takes away the social and economic development of the country and

plunges the people into poverty trap. I heard that Man is the most destructive

force on earth. Respected Sir and my fellow students during my research last

night I was shocked to see that the Globalization of the planet has done a

great work on reducing poverty but it has created two classes of people rich

and poor which I mentioned at the start. 20 % of the poverty decreased till

the end of 20th Century but not because of the Government, but because of

the non-government organizations. Those people to whom the

responsibilities of the country were given still are acting like people did in

the Cold War. Today the world is at the peak of every field including

warfare and economy. Today the wars are not like they were before. In the

past people fought on foot now there is nuclear warfare. Whole world is

spending money on nuclear weapons and modern warfare. But they are

forgetting the second class of people. The People who don’t get enough

food. People are dying of hunger and they need to be helped. Bread not

bomb is the need. We need to provide food and we need to eliminate the

crisis. We need to provide fundamental human needs to people. We need to

help. We should thank Allah for providing us this good life. Think of

yourself lying on the broken pile of wood and seeing the entrance of your

tent hoping for a NGO van to come by to your slum and give you something

to eat. Think what would you do if you are living in the poorest part of the

country and you couldn’t even move your leg. Think if Allah had given you

that life instead of this luxurious life where you have got more than you need

what would you do. This has to be put into the minds of this independent

Muslim state government. My name is Waqas Abbasi from Class VIII and I

hope someday my dream would come true and this world would be poverty-

free.
