In 2014 and 2016 the eyes of the world will be on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as they host the World Cup and the Olympic games. Executives Without Borders

Founded in the classrooms at Harvard Business School, executives Without Borders seeks to drive sustainable growth for companies and communities through business best-practices.

By connecting the talents and resources of global organizations with communities in emerging markets, we are addressing some of the world’s greatest humanitarian challenges.

Our work spans the globe and includes major programs in Haiti, Brazil, and Honduras.

In Rio de Janeiro we started by finding the best organizations in Brazil impacting lives with sustainable results: Bola Pra Frente, which uses soccer methodology to educate children and young adults.

center for digital Inclusion, (CdI), which delivers information and communication technology to underserved communities. The CdI Apps For good was amongst the winners of the google global Impact Challenge 2013.

saúde criança, which aids families with ill children by focusing on health, education and job training (Rated #1 ngO in Latin America by globe Magazine).

second, we take a management consulting role and look at all aspects of the ngO’s operations and find out where they are doing well and can scale, as well as identify areas where they need additional support. We then create a program plan to assist with strategy and operations and develop short-term projects where company professionals can engage to assist the organization. When pro bono resources are not available we work to fund those directly from the donor base of executives Without Borders.

Third, we look for companies already working in Brazil or interested in Brazil to see if they will allow us to engage their employees and share core business activities to strengthen the operations of the ngOs:

Our current corporate partners include: Alcoa, Amadeus, Dow, Greif, HP, IBM, Merck, Tupperware

Once a project is approved, we get the employees up to speed and manage the day-to-day interaction with the ngOs, making sure the employee time is used effectively and efficiently and that the ngO gets the expertise they need, when they need it.

Fourth, we assist the ngO in delivering value back to the companies and employees, making sure the companies are getting pictures and content to tell the story of their impact, as well as feedback to managers about the skills development and results their employees deliver.

Fifth, we identify areas of long-term partnership and investment opportunities for both the ngOs and the companies, which strengthen business models as well as create a framework for sustainable development.

At Executives Without Borders

our focus is on finding the best

humanitarian and development

projects in the world and making

them even better by adding

knowledge, expertise and

additional resources so that they

can increase efficiency and scale.

We do this by being the bridge

between the business community

and the non-governmental

organizations (ngOs) running

these programs. We make it easy

for the companies and ngOs to

work together and manage skills-

based volunteerism programs so

that companies can easily give

their most important resource:

the talents of their employees

and expertise that the ngOs are

unable to hire.

The result of our efforts is that

more people in the communities

get educated, find jobs and

are of better health—creating

conditions for development to

happen. The companies get

happier employees, more effective

community engagements and

relationships that are also good

for growing their core business.

In the end, everyone wins.

We make it easy for companies to gain value because we identify:

• The right NGOs to partner with, and validate the results and sustainability of their programs

• The specific needs of the NGOs and structure them into manageable projects for the companies and their employees

• The areas of value that the companies want to gain from their work with the ngOs

We make it easy for NGOs to gain value because we:

• Help them identify their needs and prioritize them for maximum impact

• Coordinate getting all company volunteers up to speed and engaged in the ngO’s projects

• Assist with scheduling and follow-up of activities and deliverables

• Train the NGOs how to deliver value back to their company partners

We focus on long-term impact:

• We do the initial matchmaking of companies and NGOs and manage the relationship to make sure it is beneficial to both parties for the long-run

• We help mediate any concerns or issues, as well as find ways to build greater understanding and trust, so relationships can grow over time

We bring expertise and funding to the NGOs:

• We identify the right people and expertise at the right time to maximize results

• We complement pro bono service with the hiring of expertise not available on a pro bono basis

• We fund costs necessary to maximize volunteer engagement and efficiency of the ngO (example: funding a software program allowing all staff to work virtually)

We provide a framework to companies where professionals can integrate service into their busy lives:

• We provide a mixture of onsite and virtual opportunities for employees that are similar to normal client work utilizing their core skills

• We split duties and responsibilities across teams of professionals instead of putting the burden of everything on individual professionals

• Allow busy professionals with family lives to still engage in a project, maximize impact, and feel the rewards of service

• We manage day-to-day operations and engagements for professionals to maximize their impact per hour spent

• We serve as the continuity on projects as professionals come and go based on availability

We provide a framework where the NGOs get the right support they need, when they need it and go beyond strategy to implementation:

• Professionals work alongside the NGO staff and strengthen their strategies and planning through business best practices

• ExecWB remains involved for the long term to make sure that projects go beyond strategy and recommendations and get implemented

We maximize the impact of donor dollars by:

• Focusing on organizational business planning and identifying cost savings and revenue opportunities for the ngO

• Leveraging private sector infrastructure to assist with scaling up successful programs

• Identifying the specific investments within the NGOs that will yield the maximum return in cash flow or social impact

Businesses entering new markets, or increasing operations in current locations, have an unprecedented opportunity to deliver jobs and spur local economic growth, while being an active partner in solving local social challenges that affect the business value chain.

Our results in Brazil to date:

• Built strong, trusted relationships between companies and three of the top ngOs in Brazil

• Delivered over $500,000 in pro bono services and over $100,000 in direct operational support

• Increased employee engagement, skills and knowledge of markets

• Improved the brand reputations of the member companies

Results for the NGOs

•Delivered over $500,000 of pro bono services and over $100,000 in direct operational support (both onsite and virtual) from execWB staff and 26 corporate volunteers from major multinational companies

•Focused on core operations and institutional needs often neglected by donors and solved problems that had been outstanding for years

•For years one of the ngOs operated under two different email systems and had difficulty communicating and sharing documents. Several Amadeus and Hp volunteers migrated the staff to one email system increasing their efficiency and communications dramatically

•Developed new institutional business plan documents helping ngOs focus on their most important activities and build frameworks for new partnerships

•Created comprehensive IT diagnostics that streamlined organizational operations and created a plan for future investments needed to sustain ngO operations

•Established help desk service system registered in over 40 community schools ensuring that schools have the resources and support they need to operate

•Upgraded servers for a 350% improvement in server speed, increased digital storage space by 1,150%, and increased computer disk space by 25,500% to increase ngO performance and knowledge management

•Translated institutional materials into English and Spanish to increase awareness and create conditions for additional fundraising success.

•Provided English language training for Executive Directors and staff to improve their comfort in dealing with international audiences, visitors and donors

•Provided over $50,000 in direct operational support to fund consultants, hardware and software to complement the corporate pro bono activities

•Provided a full-time ExecWB staff member and others part-time (valued at over $50,000 in staff time) to provide constant continuity and facilitation for ngO staff; allows the ngO staff that are already overworked to focus on their core mission

“ “A lot is happening very quickly and with high quality. I would estimate the value of the help we are receiving from the volunteers and executives Without Borders at R$370,000 (US$185,000) per year.

•Increased brand development and knowledge within top social organizations and society of the impact the companies are making

•Strengthened companies’ understanding of market opportunities in Brazil, as well as the cultural nuances needed to be successful in business there

“ “I feel more accomplished and proud to work for a company and for a leader that allows me to have this opportunity. Talking about my experiences also awakens people’s interest in dow in that we’re working in an innovative and transformative way. I was put on a project that leveraged my experience and added value. My experience translates to my work and I come to work happier.
