News from the Nurse

We are well beyond the halfway mark for the school year, which is the perfect time for a refresher on a very important

topic – severe (life threatening or anaphylactic) nut allergies at school.

An allergic reaction from ingesting or touching nuts can be very frightening and life threatening (anaphylaxis). Some of

the symptoms are: swollen eyes, swollen face, hives, nausea/ vomiting, tongue and throat swelling that can lead to

difficulty breathing. This kind of reaction is a medical emergency and must be treated within minutes.

Q: How can we, as a school community, help to keep students with severe nut allergies safe at school?

A: To protect these students, please avoid sending snacks to share/ classroom treats or bake sale items

that contain nuts or may have nut contamination. If there are specific guidelines in place for certain

classrooms or lunchroom tables, please follow them.

*Please take extra care and read labels in order to avoid sending in nut-containing or potentially nut-contaminated

foods if they are to be consumed in a classroom that has been identified as “nut free” or is to be shared with others,

such as classroom treats or bake sale items, etc. Food labels will list nuts in the ingredient list, as well as identify in the

allergen information section if it contains nuts or may contain nuts or may have been processed on shared equipment or

in a facility that also processes nuts.

*If you are sending in home baked goods – no nuts, no nut-based or nut-containing flours or oils etc, use an

abundance of caution in your kitchen to avoid cross-contamination of utensils and surfaces.

*If you are unsure about a particular food item, please ask your child’s teacher or the school nurse for

verification.

It is important to understand that some people with allergies, especially to nuts, can have or develop a touch allergy in

addition to an ingestion allergy. This means that along with having the life threatening reaction if he/she eats anything

with nuts, he/she can have a life threatening reaction from inadvertently touching something that has nuts, peanuts,

peanut oil or flour, or peanut butter on it. He/she can be endangered if another child spills, or wipes food that contains

nut on a table, chair, doorknob, clothing, hands or face, and then he/she comes in contact with it.

Page 7: Braves’ Bulletin - St. Joe's Catholic School · 2016. 8. 9. · Braves’ Bulletin February 4, 2016 Calendar of Events thAccreditation Visit Fri., Feb. 5 1:30 p.m. dismissal st1

Good handwashing with soap and water minimizes risk, as does cleaning surfaces appropriately. Hand sanitizer is NOT

an effective means of removing the allergen - because the allergen is a protein structure, not a bacteria or germ, so it

cannot be “killed,” but rather, it must be removed. The same holds true for Lysol and other sanitizing sprays (not

effective). Good old fashioned elbow grease and a good cleanser and a cloth, or a cleaning wipe of some sort are most

effective at removing the nut allergen.

This is a great learning opportunity for all of us to learn about good nutritional choices and to practice cooperation to

ensure the safety of our school community, and to learn about accepting each person as unique and different.

Thank you for your help and cooperation.
