    Brasil Surf Pro 2010: Sustainability Plan
  • 4. Detailed diagnostic studies were carried out in every one of the five regions visited by the BSP circuit to obtain a clear idea of the principal local environmental and social issues. Each region was visited approximately two months before each contest and meetings were staged with state surfing federations and regional associations, environmental and social NGO's and local governmental agencies and departments for the environment and education. From the information gathered we then went to work to generate meaningful and lasting legacies for each region, always using the Agenda 21 motto Think Global Act Local and remembering that the Brasil Surf Pro circuit will possibly be back in the same region or even the same beach next year. Needless to say we are contacting everyone already and paving the way to grow on the success of 2010. Diagnostic Study 5. 4. 3. 1. 4.

    • Low environmental impact materials were used in all the 5 contests of the circuit, a simple measure that can be adopted by any event:
    • Individual mugs were given to the athletes and the entire production crew, thus avoiding the use of disposable plastic cups;
    • Recycled paper folders, note pads and certified wood pencils for the Ecoencontro Seminars;
    • Selective trash disposal bins made from toothpaste tube pressed panels;
    • Squeeze bottles for the Ecoencontro invitees, surfers, press crews and production crew, again so as to avoid the use of disposables;

    • Recycled paper bags from the TAMAR project;
    • The trophies of each of the five contests were made using certified or recycled material;
    • All press kits given in MDF certified wood pen drives;
    • Sticky Bumps provided biodegradable board wax made from soy bean oil;
    • Use of biodegradable cleaning materials in all contests;
    • 20% Biodeisel powered generators were used; and
    • The production crews and sponsor companies were oriented to use packaging made from re-usable or recyclable material.
    Environmental impact reduction
  • 7. The selective disposal bins positioned throughout the event and an onsite separation depot meant that all recyclable material was divided into its specific categories at the contest. The cleaning and waste managent team were always contracted from local recycling cooperatives thus generating much needed extra income and drawing media and government attention toward more regional investment in recycling and the role of the catador. This experience in waste management was for many of our partner cooperative teams a positive learning experience and connections were made between their service and the regional surfing contests and other commercial events held throughout the year. Waste Management
  • 8. Considering the fact that a national professional surfing contest attracts a large crowd, the protection of the beach vegetation is obviously a major priority. The beaches where the first and last legs of the circuit were held, the right side of Itamambuca beach (12 contests) and Posto 4 at Barra da Tijuca (9 contests) are intensely utilized for local, regional, national and even international contests throughout the year. It was therfore decided to leave a permanent legacy at each location which resulted in the placing of permanent protective eucalyptus fencing along the main contest areas and awareness signage in all access paths. Beach vegetation protection
  • 9. The Surf and Sustainability program comprised of an educational exhibition space geared toward information and awareness regarding the danger that plastic is causing to the worlds ocean and coastal ecosystems and how sustainable consumption, in particular recycling, should play a greater role in our lives. Also it illustrated how the sport of surfing and NGOs such as Surfrider Foundation are engaging society in addressing these important issues. In Ubatuba, Bzios and Florianpolis partnerships were formed with their respective Education and Environmant Governmental Secretariats resulting in the visitation of 1256 students between the ages 5 and 14 years. In Porto de Galinhas (Cupe) and Rio de Janeiro the contests coincided with the holiday period, so partnerships were formed with social inclusion projects resulting in 360 children from extremely poor communities visiting the contest, some children beleive it or not had never set foot on a beach in their lives.. • The following activities were promoted in the program:

    • Presentation of the threats toward the oceans, giving enphasis on the grave problem that the accumulation of plastic in the oceans is causing, showcasing Surfrider Foundation initiatives and awareness campaigns;
    • Dialogue relating to the 5Rs concept of sustainable consumption (rethink, reflect, refuse, reuse and recycle) and the essential role of recycling in society;
    • Recycled paper and arte mosaic workshops;
    • Presentation of the Tamar project with real size turtle replicas and distribution of educative material;
    • Eco Library: reading workshops and free discussion touching on themes such as sustainability, marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems;
    • Educational activities lead by environmental educator Bruna Nazzari, focusing on central themes such as coastal environment and sustainability, through a variety of practical exercises and drawing lessons, eco-cooperation games and competions;
