Welcome to the 8th Annual Branding the Best Bull Sale! We can’t thank our customers enough for your support over the years; it means a lot.

Wow, are things changing in the cattle industry. As I write this in the middle of January, the cattle market is taking one major upswing. We all knew this day would come, but even I wasn’t prepared for these kinds of prices. 600 pound steers are approaching $2/lbs. That is double what it was only 5 years ago. Fat cattle are bringing all time highs and, with cost of gains dropping, that money is trickling down to the cow calf producer. It is about time.

Ensuring that your herd is positioned to win for this cattle market is essential to your long term success. There is still a large price gap between first and second cut feeder cattle. Your bull battery will determine in large part how your calves sell in the coming years. We don’t profess to have the biggest bull sale, the fanciest cattle or banners behind our bulls. What we can offer however, is a program that is based on commercial production practices. Our purebred cows are managed next to our commercial herd, we try to maximize the amount of grazing days; we are relentless in our culling and have ZERO tolerance for poor feet or udders in our herd.

The bull calves you see on offer today were chosen from 105 calves in the fall. We cull in the fall based heavily on muscle expression, the reason being if they have this key trait, chances are their mother has ample milk and he is an early maturing calf. We feel these are two crucial traits for success in the cattle business. Selection throughout the winter is based on performance, docility, feet and legs, and fertility. If we do not like the bull’s mother, he does not stay a bull. Trust is earned, not given. We intend on continuing to earn your trust.

The bulls were weaned on October 5th and have been on a diet of oats, free choice alfalfa grass hay and 32% beef supplement. Oat silage was introduced in December. The oats are fed at a rate of 1% body weight. The bulls did not get creep feed and no feet are ever trimmed. What you see is what you get, no smoke, no mirrors.

I am not sure if we have ever raised a calf quite like this. He and his dam were shown at the Turtleford Fair this past summer, where they were Reserve Champion British Pair out of 19 entries. Simply put, his dam is gorgeous. I really struggle to find a hole in her. He has the deepest rib that I have seen in a long time, with that easy fleshing, herd bull look and a puppy dog disposition. Smooth fronted, thick topped, heavy muscled, a sound broad hoof with the ability to cover 50+ females every year we have used him. He has covered both cows and heifers with great success. His bull calves are consistently wide based, heavy muscled, easy fleshing calves that are born easy and grow. We have a large sample size from him this year that should give you an appreciation of what he has done for us. INSURANCE: Insurance will be available on sale day and we ask that all cattle left be fully insured.

DISPUTES: In case of dispute, bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision in such matters will be final.

PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold.

LIABILITY: All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk and the seller and Sales Management assume no liability for any accidents that may occur.
