About IHI Open School Chapters

IHI Open School Chapters are face-to-face, interprofessional groups located on

university campuses or in health care organizations. These Chapters create a forum for

like-minded health care students, residents, and professionals to interact and help each

other gain skills to improve care. IHI Open School Chapters provide opportunities

to learn about quality improvement and improving care for patients, to network with

peers, to connect with engaged and supportive faculty, and to accomplish scholarly

activities, such as publishing and presenting improvement work.

IHI Open School Chapters are typically formed and led by a Chapter Leader. Students

or residents usually lead Chapters, although faculty, deans, and health professionals

can also serve as Chapter Leaders. The primary responsibilities include:

• Recruiting students, faculty, and other health professionals;

• Facilitating events and activities that provide learning

and networking opportunities;

• Connecting with other Chapter Leaders, locally and

internationally, to share ideas and best practices; and

• Advocating for patient safety and quality improvement topics to

be included in their formal curriculum and training program.

To learn more about starting a Chapter, please visit ihi.org/OpenSchool and click on

About These Branding Guidelines for IHI Open School Chapters

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” ~ African proverb

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and the IHI Open School are well-

known in many parts of the world. The IHI brand relays high quality, integrity, and a

genuine focus on improving health and health care worldwide. In an effort to help

our community stand together behind this important mission, we’ve created these

branding guidelines for IHI Open School Chapters.

The guidelines will help Chapters around the world stay connected to one another

with a consistent look and feel. They are not intended to restrict your creativity or

uniqueness as a Chapter; instead, they will increase your standing as an organization

and raise the volume of our unified voice. With your help, we will, together, continue to

accelerate this important work of improving health care.

For Chapters that identify themselves with the IHI Open School by using the program

name and visuals — whether on the web, in electronic or printed materials, etc. —

these branding guidelines provide specific parameters that you must follow.

PLEASE NOTE: The Institute for Healthcare Improvement is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization. If you are speaking as a member of, on behalf of, or representing IHI, the IHI Open School, IHI Open School Chapters, or any initiative that has the IHI Open School as a collaborator, you may not utilize IHI or IHI Open School brands, logos, visuals, templates, names, or messages to imply endorsement of or lend support to:• a political candidate or political party;• a product or service that may benefit financially; or• any commercial or for-profit activity. If you have questions or wish to discuss any of these scenarios, please contact [email protected].

Your Chapter’s Visual Lockup, Part 1

Beantown University

Keep spacing evenbetween line and Chapter name or Chapter logo

Use Arial font and left align your text.

Your school or organization may need one or two lines of text, depending on length.

Keep immediate area around the lockup clear of other elements, lines, or text.

Create your Chapter’s visual lockup (a visual lockup shows the logo with all related elements locked in their positions in relation to the logo) and then consistently use the same visual for all communications and materials. To create your Chapter’s visual lockup, you may choose to use written text or a logo for your organization or school. Locking your organization’s identity up with the IHI Open School visual will signal that your Chapter is integrated into the overall IHI Open School network. This association may help your Chapter gain credibility with constituents, speakers, and donors or on campus with administrators and other students.

The left side of the Chapter visual lockup should never appear on its own without an organization’s name or logo on the right. The left side of the Chapter visual lockup should not be interpreted as a separate logo for the IHI Open School.

Your school or organization logo should appear visually balanced (so one side is not visually dominating) with the IHI Open School visual.

Chapter Visual Lockup with Text

Chapter Visual Lockup with Logo

The IHI Open School visual should always appear in English and not translated into other languages.

PLEASE NOTE: Once you have created your Chapter’s visual lockup, it should be the ONLY graphic used by your Chapter. Please do not use the graphics seen on the IHI website or on general materials from the IHI Open School program in Cambridge, Massachusetts (see exception on page 11).

Your school or organization text should appear visually balanced (so one side is not visually dominating) with the IHI Open School visual.

Your Chapter’s Visual Lockup, Part 2

One Color/Grayscale Option

Although we highly recommend using color versions of the Chapter visual lockup, we recognize that there will be occasions when your production process and budget will not allow more than one color. In those instances, please use a grayscale version of the lockup.

This is the minimum size of the left side of the Chapter visual lockup. Please do not make this smaller than 0.375” or 3/8” in height.

Chapter Visual Lockup Minimum Size

Dark GrayPMS 432C23 M2 Y0 K77R69 G85 B96Hex #455560

Color Version

Chapters may use a 4-color version (CMYK) of the Chapter visual lockup as is common with many digital printers. Alternatively, Chapters may use a 3-color version with PMS 3135 for the blue, PMS 432 for the dark gray, and PMS 346 for the green. Please note that the “i” within the blue symbol must appear as white or a color very close to white. If you have other color scenarios to contend with, please contact [email protected] for assistance.

Be careful not to make one side of the lockup much bigger or smaller than the other. Keep both sides visually balanced. In this example, Beantown University is still not as tall as the left side but it is visually dominating.

Be careful not to stretch or compress either side of the visual lockup. Also note that this problem can occur with the entire lockup so always resize your lockup with the corner of the graphic and keep the correct proportions.

Beantown University

This visual has been stretched and appears shorter and wider than it should.

This visual has been compressed and appears narrower and taller than it should.

Avoid Stretching or Compressing

Your Chapter’s Visual Lockup, Part 3

Once you create your Chapter’s visual lockup, it may be easier to avoid these common issues.

Avoid Visual Imbalance

IHI Open School Chapters should only use the IHI logo with the “Open School” program name included in green.

Avoid Using the IHI Logo

Missing “Open School” text in green.

Social Media

This space is for photos, your Chapter’s visual lockup, or other graphics that your Chapter may wish to showcase.

If your Chapter uses social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, you will need to set up your Chapter’s landing page and a social media icon.

Social Media Name

For your Chapter icon, you may use your own organization’s logo.

Social Media Icon, Option 1

For your Chapter icon, you may combine your organization’s logo with the IHI Open School social media icon. Alternatively, you can use your school colors and include your organization’s name, abbreviated name, or acronym in text in combination with the IHI Open School social media icon.

Social Media Icon, Options 2 and 3

For your Chapter icon, you may choose to use a general IHI Open School Chapter icon (shown on left below) or an image or graphic that is completely unrelated to the IHI Open School visuals (example shown on right below). Please avoid creating graphics from the IHI logo, any of the logo elements, or the names of any IHI program, including the IHI Open School.

Social Media Icon, Options 4 and 5

Please use your full Chapter name to label your social media site. You may use your abbreviated program name with “IHI Open School instead of the full “Institute for Healthcare Improvement Open School” in this context, if you prefer.

Example Materials and Giveaways

If your university or organization does not allow you to print your Chapter name or visual lockup on giveaways or other stand-alone materials, like table cloths, the IHI Open School can work with you to possibly grant an exception to these brand standards and give permission to use the main program visual in certain instances. Contact us about any special circumstances at [email protected].

You can use your Chapter’s visual lockup to create a host of marketing materials and giveaways that will help you bring your Chapter brand to life.

Exception to Using a Chapter Visual Lockup on Giveaways

The visual above is used by the program team of the IHI Open School in Cambridge, MA, so you will see it on core materials and on the IHI Open School website. Chapters should NOT use this graphic on materials. Instead, Chapters should use a Chapter visual lockup as described on page 6 of this guide.

This example shows the main visual used by IHI Open School program team. This visual can be used on giveaways or stand-alone items ONLY if an exception to these brand standards has been granted.
