brand dot you: learn to simplify & promote your "social self"

DESCRIPTION
This is a presentation I did on November 10, 2011, for TechThursday at UrbanRethink, a co-working and community meeting space in Orlando, Florida. I focus on free online services that allow you to easily create a well-designed nexus for all the social networks you participate in and give you a single URL to share with people in an email signature, on a business card, etc. I call these the Know.me services. I also touch briefly on the all-important Google Profile and how to update that aspect of your "Social Self." For me, this is the Find.me service, not only in terms of discovery, but for search engine optimization as well. I contrast what a business card looked like in the days of Paladin from the TV show "Have Gun Will Travel" where all it took to contact Paladin was to wire his "handle" in San Francisco via telegraph, with a modern day business card that lists URLs/handles for a blog, LinkedIn profile and Twitter. Even the latter is inadequate for many people involved in social networking today. The evening included a brief "hands-on" where a member of the audience got her own About.me profile started in a matter of minutes. Thus the photo of the "guinea pig" in a hat. I blog about the sociology of hats so any opportunity to include a great hat photo and I will take it. See HatsInHand.tumblr.com. The final couple of slides are a caution about your online identity and Brand Dot You. I close with a funny gaffe I inadvertently created on Twitter years back when I went to an emergency room for an allergic reaction to an insect bite. Because I am highly allergic there is a potential for airway obstruction and the triage nurse escalated my case, but the early Twitter interface cut off the first part of my tweet about this escalation at "b/c of pot . . .," instead of showing the full "b/c of potential airway issue." I lived. And I learned. I hope you learn something here , too.TRANSCRIPT
