President’s Message

March is Women’s History Month. So I thought it would be a good time to reflect on AAUW’s mission and our role in advancing equity for women and girls. Yes, AAUW is about social activities and friendship, but our primary purpose is to help eliminate educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance. Our branch has chosen to attack these issues on several fronts, including providing scholarships to help re-entry women achieve their educational goals, sending middle school girls to Tech Trek to encourage them to pursue careers in STEM, and teaching classes at Sierra College in how to negotiate salaries to help eliminate the pay gap.

All of these activities are very much in line with our mission. However, all of these activities take money and time. I know many of you have already donated to the non-event, and I sincerely thank you for those donations. But in many ways our branch needs your time as much as it needs your money. On May 2 we’ll be having our largest fundraiser of the year—Antique Answers. This event was very successful last year—we raised over $5,000 for our branch philanthropies. However, this event requires a large number of volunteers to be successful. The good news is you can volunteer before hand to help with the pre-event tasks or you can volunteer for a couple of hours the day of the event. I know many people are reluctant to volunteer because they don’t have a lot of time, or a specific skill, or they just don’t know what they have to offer. You don’t have to make a long term commitment, but this branch needs people to volunteer to work on fundraising, to volunteer to be on committees, to volunteer to host a neighborhood group or interest group. By volunteering, even in a small way, you’ll be helping to advance the mission of this organization and help younger women and girls overcome some of the barriers that we faced in our lifetimes.

Nothing is more satisfying than feeling that you’ve done something to help others. Those of you that attended the Kickoff in September know that the philanthropies that this branch funds truly did make a difference in the lives of those Tech Trek girls and the scholarship women. What a feeling of accomplishment that was to see the effects of our hard work and contributions in those young women’s lives. Please, let’s keep in mind all of this branch’s wonderful activities and sign up to volunteer to help out.

If you’d like to volunteer to help with our Antique Answers event, please contact

Linda Howard. If you’re not able to help out with Antique Answers but would like to

volunteer for another project, please contact me. Thanks!

Speech Trek Contest Results!

By Gail Berberian, Speech Trek Committee Chair

The Eleanor Stem Allen 9th Annual Speech Trek Contest held on Saturday, February 7, at 10:00 a.m. in the Whitney High School Library was a great success. The audience, numbering between 53-55, enjoyed listening to speeches from eleven students representing six high schools in the Roseville-South Placer area. The topic, whether or not college was worth the time and the expense, brought to light some interesting arguments, both supporting a college education and questioning its value in today’s society. The program opened with branch president Shelley Jensen explaining the mission and work of AAUW, followed by David Allen speaking about his mother Eleanor’s dedication to education, to excellence, and to the creation and growth of the contest which memorializes her.

After the speeches were delivered, the three judges---Janice Marcum, Dennis Miller, and Michelle Stark--- handed their ballots to the scorers who then spent the brief intermission in the program to tally the scores. During the break, attendees enjoyed light refreshments and shared reactions to the speeches. Then Speech Trek Committee chair, Gail Berberian, presented each participant with a certificate of participation, thanking each for his/her time and effort. Finally, David Allen presented the top three winners with their prize money:

1st Place: Sai Sumana Kaluvai 2nd Place: Jenny Mooney 3rd Place: Skyler Vega Senior at Granite Bay High School Senior at Horizon Charter School Sophomore at Rocklin High School Awarded $750 Awarded $500 Awarded $250

The first place winner’s speech will be submitted in the form of a DVD to the state finals. The top three speakers in the state will then give their speeches at the state meeting in April in Huntington Beach to determine who will capture 1st place ($1500), 2nd place ($1000), and 3rd place ($500) statewide.

Carole Biemer and Virginia Legarre organized a lunch at BJ's in Roseville after the contest for interested members of AAUW who attended the event.

A special thank you goes to all of the volunteers who so generously gave their time and expertise to this event, without whom the contest could not have been held. Peter Beckett, Mike Epling, and Julie Epling were the videography team; Larry Bordeaux was the photogra-pher; and Jennifer Hanks, Assistant Principal of Whitney High School, was instrumental in getting the venue. The Speech Trek Committee also deserves appreciation for putting on a successful event: Barbara Fraivillig, Cindy Hays, Susan Hall, Kim Lillard, Dona Louzader, Janice Marcum, Leslie McNeill, and Laurie Schuler.

It’s tax preparation time. Don’t forget that $70 of your 2014-15 branch dues is tax-deductible (branch and national together), as are all monetary contributions to the branch’s or National’s philanthropic programs made in 2014 because of our branch’s non-profit status.

Nominating Committee Report for March 2015

By Kathleen Crawford, Nominating Committee Chairperson

The branch Nominating Committee is pleased to place the following names in nomination for elected branch officers beginning in July 2015. The election takes place at the branch April General Meeting, and the Installation Luncheon will be in June.

PRESIDENT: Sanchia Spandow PRESIDENT ELECT: To Be Determined PROGRAM VICE PRESIDENT: Peggy Rutherford MEMBERSHIP VICE PRESIDENT: Patricia Lane FINANCE VICE PRESIDENT: Kathy Novotny OUTREACH VICE PRESIDENT: Lynda Braun PHILANTHROPY VICE PRESIDENT: Jackie Lamb SECRETARY: To Be Determined This is a very strong board with a Past President agreeing to serve another term as our incoming leader. Thank you, Sanchia! Returning board members Patricia Lane and Kathy Novotny will provide continuity and expertise. Lynda Braun has stepped up to the Outreach Vice President position and Jackie Lamb has returned to the board as Philanthropy Vice President. The branch is fortunate that each one has committed their time and talents for another year.

Two positions remain vacant and nominations remain open. President Elect is a two year term which allows a full year of board service while preparing for the next term as President to begin in July 2016. Secretary is a one year term involving monthly board meetings, creating board meeting minutes (summary descriptions of agenda items with motions/actions noted), distribution of minutes to board and Facebook page for member access as well as an Action Items list for board follow up. This is an opportunity to contribute to our leadership team while learning a great deal about the branch programs and projects. It is perfectly acceptable to self-nominate, so please consider “leaning in” by joining the branch board.

Additional positions needed include the appointed board positions as well as committee members for Membership, Program, Outreach and Philanthropy. For a complete list, you may check page 5 of your Handbook. Each Vice President will be recruiting a deputy and committee to assist in achieving the programs and goals. In fact, Kate Tiongson has already signed on as Philanthropy Deputy!

To paraphrase an African saying, “It takes a village” to accomplish the AAUW goals and mission. Please contact anyone of the Nominating Committee members (Kathleen Crawford, Kathy Kort and Elsie Gaura) to let us know if you are willing to join our village, the branch Leadership Team!

February 11 found the AAUW RSP Branch Board and Membership Committee gathered to greet and meet the new members of the Branch who have joined since August. Among the new members were these newest members.

Please welcome: Judy Bentley, who comes from Rocklin. Judy is a graduate of Pomona State University with a BA in English and has retired after a career in Medical Transcription. Also from Rocklin is Linda Hart. Linda holds an AA in English from the College of the Canyons. She has retired as a tutor and working with disabled students. Viktoria Peterson resides in Roseville. She has a BA in Education from San Francisco State University, is a retired teacher and bookkeeper. Viktoria maintains a career today as a property manager.

Welcome Judy, Linda and Viktoria to the AAUW Roseville South Placer Branch!

Long-time branch member Carol Powell has moved to Oregon to be closer to family

after many years in Rocklin's Springfield community. Carol has been an active and

productive member of the branch and AAUW's larger community. Her special passion

was Public Policy; she served as Chair of the Public Policy interest group for a number

of years in the early 2000's. More importantly, Carol was a Co-president in 2003-04

and served in many other capacities for the branch. In appreciation for her service to

the branch, she was an Eleanor Roosevelt award winner in 2007.

Thank you, Carol, for all you have done for the Roseville-South Placer branch to

advance AAUW's mission and goals. Should you wish to send Carol a card, please contact

Joan Mackey for her address.

The branch has, sadly, lost another member: Carol Tomlin. She has not

been active the last few years, but early on she had been a member of the

Women of the World interest group and attended our Rocklin Neighborhood

group several times. Carol was a graduate of a university in Wisconsin and

had an MBA from Golden Gate University. She was a past president of an

AAUW branch in the Bay Area some years ago. Our branch expresses

condolences to Carol’s family and friends.

A new and easy way to help the branch!

So many members order from Amazon, some even using Amazon prime. Now there is a way to buy your usual item(s) and let Amazon give back to our non-profit charitable funds.

When you are ready to place an Amazon order:

Find the "Select a charity" space and type in AAUW Roseville

South Placer. Then click the select button.

Now you are on Amazon Smile. You have just entered Amazon

through a different portal.

Shop and place your order in the usual way, and Amazon takes care of the rest, giving back one-half

a percent to our branch--not a lot, but every few dollars help, and you have no extra charges. You

already have your credit card and personal information on file and secured with them, so you are not

exposing any information to a third party. If you are an Amazon Prime user, the process works the

same way.

If you are not an Amazon user but would like to be, you will be asked to set up an account.

Amazon walks you through the process. If you are a regular Amazon buyer, you already know

the procedures. Eventually the branch hopes to have a similar connection with other

businesses that will work the same way. Keep shopping and help our worthy causes!

Recent records show that our supporters made purchases on the Amazon Smile program between October 1st and December 31st of 2014. Thanks to all who participated, and thanks for continuing to make your purchases through Amazon Smile!

World War II opened up many opportunities for women, particularly for Mexican American women. In the war years, unprecedented employment avenues opened in U.S. defense industries, at the same time that massive population shifts and the war challenged Americans to rethink notions of race. At this extraordinary historical moment, Mexican American women found new means to exercise control over their lives in the home, workplace, and nation. You are cordially invited to meet and hear from a panel of Mexican American women educators about the role Latinas played during World War II.

This stimulating and thought-provoking event will take place on March 26, 12:30 – 2:00 pm in the Dietrich Theater on the Sierra College Campus. Admission is free.

Attend Northern CA Leadership Development Workshop on March 21 By Kathleen Crawford: Public Policy & Leadership Development

Have you ever wondered what your membership in AAUW means? Are you a member, a participant or a contributor to the branch? My own history with our organization is one that says at different times I have been all three roles. A member qualifies by educational requirement and a dues check annually. A participant is a member who attends interest group(s) or a few programs in a given year and makes a financial contribution towards our projects. A contributor is someone who serves as a board member, takes a committee position or assists with the many fundraising tasks in addition to their financial commitment to our programs and projects. Which are you? Have you ever considered moving from one role to another? For me, personal growth means being open to new opportunities, and AAUW is a good resource for our members. Please mark your calendar for Saturday March 21, 2015 to attend the Northern CA Leadership Development Workshop in Hayward, CA. The details and sign up form are on page 13 of your California Perspective emailed to you by the state office in late January. If you need another copy, please go to the state website (ca-aauw.org) and click on Forms, then click on California Perspective to pull up the correct issue OR you can call me to request that I forward a copy to you. In addition to the keynote speakers Deepti Gudipati and Erica Stout (national AAUW Training & Program Manager) and our state President Kathleen Doty, this Saturday session includes three opportunities to sample from seven workshop titles, including Mentoring & Supporting Leaders as well as Managing Change, Being a Change Leader. I am planning to attend and would appreciate hearing from anyone else interested so that we can cover as many workshops as possible to share materials with our current as well as incoming board members. The registration deadline is March 12. This will be the only workshop offered in Northern CA by the state or Interbranch Council. The branch Nominating Committee continues to identify new leaders for our board positions and these workshops are wonderful opportunities to develop your skills and interests in serving on the board as well as committees which are vital to accomplishing our branch goals and projects, including Tech Trek, Speech Trek, and Sierra College Scholarships & Leadership efforts. Please contact anyone of the Nominating Committee members (Kathleen Crawford, Kathy Kort and Elsie Gaura) to let us know if you are willing to join the branch Leadership Team! Take advantage of our women power and join in the advocacy efforts by signing up at [email protected] for the Two Minute Activist and weekly emails on federal issues. Once you sign up on the national site, you are automatically registered for the CA State Alert messages. If you are interested in public policy issues and wish to join a branch discussion group, please contact me by phone or email. Thank you!
