    BranchlessBankingnetworkexpandsby16percentto22,512insecondquarterofFY12:SBPpublication

    TheBranchlessBanking(BB)networkinPakistanexpandedby16percentinthesecondquarter

    (October December 2011) of the current fiscal year (201112) to reach 22,512 agents covering the

    entire lengthandbreadthof the country, saysStateBanks BranchlessBankingNewsletter released

    today.

    According to the publication, the number of Branchless Banking accounts increased by 40

    percentto929,184inOctober December,2011periodascomparedtothepreviousquarter.Thetotal

    BranchlessBankingdepositsjumpedby169percent toRs503million in thequarterunder reviewas

    compared tothepreviousquarter, itsaid,addingthatthenumberofBranchlessBankingtransactions

    duringthesecondquartersurgedby30percentto20.6millionwhilethevalueoftransactionsshoweda

    growthof35percenttoreachRs.79,410million.

    TheaveragesizeofbranchlessbankingtransactionwasRs.3,855whiletheaveragenumberof

    dailytransactionswas228,855.Thisshowsthatmobilephonetechnologyandagentbasedbankingare

    helpingaccesstofinancialservicesbythehithertounbankedpoor,theNewslettersaid,addingthatby

    theendofDecember2011,morethan929,000customershavebeenregisteredasmwalletusers.

    TheNewsletter said that innovative branchless bankingmodels have beenpenetrating in all

    areas of payments such as utility bills, GovernmenttoPersons (G2P), PersonstoPersons (P2P)

    paymentswhilescalingup otherservicesrelatingtodepositsandloans.

    Billspayment&topupsremainedthedominatingactivity inthequarterunderreviewwith53

    percentshare

    in

    total

    numbers,

    followed

    by

    fund

    transfers

    and

    deposits

    with

    share

    of

    39

    percent

    and

    8percentrespectively, itsaidandaddedthattheP2Ppaymentsremainedthemostpopularmechanism

    with74%share inthetotal fundstransfer. Initialhighconcentration inP2Ptransactionssuggeststhat

    the industry needs to develop a viable valueproposition for registration and activation of mobile

    accounts,itadded.
