WELCOME TO BRAMLEY SUNNYSIDE INFANT SCHOOL

Choosing the right primary school is a very important decision for all parents.

We hope this prospectus will help you in making that choice. It provides an

outline of the opportunities that are available to the children who attend

Bramley Sunnyside Infants.

We hope that you will find us a happy and friendly school, committed to doing

the best for the children in our care.

Our school is a place where each individual feels valued and we hope that

children leave as confident, creative and thoughtful individuals.

We believe that the key to success is the partnership between parents, teacher

and child and we very much encourage your involvement.

It is of course impossible for a prospectus to fully capture the full experience

of what goes on every day in a school. You are warmly invited to visit the school

where the head teacher, or other members of staff will be pleased to show you

around. You can also visit the school web site on

Bramley Sunnyside Infant School is a larger than average school for 3 to 7 year

old pupils, situated on the outskirts of Rotherham. The school is set on a large

site which we share with Bramley Sunnyside Junior School. We have 10

classrooms, all recently refurbished, a library, a hall for PE and assemblies and a

separate dining hall. Creativity is very much at the heart of our curriculum.

We have a separate Foundation Stage Unit and the Year 1 and 2 children are

based in the main school. We do however strive to create opportunities for the

whole school to come together to share experiences.

We have developed outdoor areas including an allotment, large outdoor

playground with quality play equipment, large grassed field and a separate

outdoor area for Foundation Stage children. Shade is provided on each outdoor

area. The children have planted containers at the front of the school which

bloom each season.

There are 245 full time pupils on role, and 78 attending part time in the

Foundation Stage 1. The great majority of pupils are of white British ethnic

background, with a small number of Chinese and Asian heritage. On admission to

the Foundation stage unit, the attainments of children vary but are average

overall. The number of pupils in the school with special educational needs is

broadly average, with most of these pupils experiencing moderate learning

difficulties and some with specific speech and language difficulties.

Our Vision…

At Bramley Sunnyside Infants we like to see children come to school in the

morning with a smile on their face. We want them to have an enjoyable day

through exciting, stimulating activities, and leave school in the evening being

proud of the day’s achievements.

Newsletter

Rather than sending numerous letters every week, we aim to send a newsletter

every Thursday letting you know about events in school. Spare copies are

available at the office.

Attendance

It is vital that your child has good attendance. If your child is absent for any

reason parents should notify the school by telephone, e mail or letter on the

first day of absence by 9.30am, giving the reason. If your child has sickness or

diarrhoea please keep them at home for a full 48 hours afterwards. Parents

should arrange family holidays to coincide with school holidays. Please collect

your child on time- being the last one can be distressing

An Educational Welfare Officer visits school regularly and checks the registers

for any persistent lateness or absence.

Behaviour

The children are encouraged to be polite and well mannered at all times. We very

much promote a positive approach to managing behaviour and have a number of

reward systems in place. Children receive ‘stickers’ for behaviour, effort and

attainment. They also have special teacher’s notes which tell parents of any work

or deed which is of merit. A ‘Gold Book’ assembly is held every Friday which

celebrates success publicly and each week children are invited to attend ‘always

club’ - a club that recognizes children who are ‘always good’

In short, we reward our children at every possible opportunity and highlight

positive behaviour and attitudes.

There are four school rules that every child is aware of:

Follow instructions

Be kind to everyone

Look after everything at school

Do your best

These are designed for the children’s well-being, health and safety and underpin

all aspects of school life. The reasons for them are carefully explained so that

the children all understand them. Each class devises their own rules at the start

of the year. There are set sanctions for all children should they break our

school rules and these are displayed in each classroom. Our full behaviour policy

is available upon request.

Bullying:

Happily we rarely have any incidences of behaviour, which could be described as

bullying. However, bullying has no place at Bramley Sunnyside. Please let us know

if you feel this may be happening or encourage your child to tell us in confidence.

The school has an anti-bulling policy which is available on request.

School uniform

Our school uniform is:

Gold polo shirt

Red sweatshirt/ cardigan

Dark coloured trousers/ skirt/ pinafore dress

Red/ Yellow summer dress for girls

NB Uniform with our school logo can be purchased from ‘Tops and bottoms’ in

the village. Alternatively children can wear uniform without the logo.

PE kit:

White t shirt

Navy/ Black shorts

Pumps for outdoor PE

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE LABEL ALL CLOTHING

School organisation

The school has four year groups: Foundation 1, foundation 2, Year 1 and Year 2.

The Foundation classes are housed in the foundation stage unit and Year 1 and 2

in the main building. We aim to have three classes per year group plus

Foundation 1 but on occasions have a mixed class. You will be told in the summer

term which class your child is going into the following academic year.

There is a teacher plus some classroom support for each class. Teachers use a

variety of teaching methods for the whole class, for groups and for individuals

according to the subject being taught. Parents are always welcome into school

and can also view our policy document on Teaching and Learning.

Admissions

Foundation 1 (3 year olds)

Foundation 1 admits children from the age of three. We have 78 part-time

places; 39 morning and 39 afternoon. Parents are asked to complete a FS1 slip to

register their child, these are available from the office or Foundation Stage

Unit.

As places are at a premium, official criteria are strictly applied. Should more

children wish to enter the Foundation 1 than there are places available, the Local

Authority Admission criteria are as follows:

1. A demonstrable educational, medical or social need, supported by

professional evidence, for a child to attend Bramley Sunnyside Infants, as

determined by the Local Authority in liaison with the Headteacher.

2. Those children who live within the catchment area for the school or whose

catchment area does not have FS1 provision

3. Proximity of the child’s home to the school, with those living nearer the

school being accorded the higher priority.

Continued attendance in the Foundation 1 is dependent upon an 80% attendance

record.

Admission to the Foundation 1 does not guarantee a Full Time place.

Page 10: BRAMLEY SUNNYSIDE INFANT SCHOOL ROTHERHAM S66 3QW · ROTHERHAM S66 3QW TELEPHONE NUMBER: 01709 543061 EMAIL: ... You can also visit the school web site on . 3 ... Red/ Yellow summer

10

Full Time Education (4 –7 year olds)

Our admission number is 80 pupils per year group.

Should more children wish to enter the school full time than there are places

available, the Governors have set the following criteria for admissions:

1. Children in Local Authority Care.

2. Current family association.

3. Health and Special Access reasons.

4. Nearness of children’s homes and ease of access to school.

Whilst application for the Foundation 1 is through the school, application for a

full time place (FS2-Y2) is through an admission form which is available from

Local Authority.

The Head teacher regularly tours the school with prospective parents and visits

can be arranged by contacting the school office.

Multi-culture

The school is an inclusive school and welcomes the opportunity to learn about

different ways of life, cultures and beliefs. The staff encourage everyone to

take part on an equal basis within our community.

Administration of medicines

It is our policy not to administer medicines or allow children to bring medicines

into school. Exceptions include medication for the treatment of Asthma,

Diabetes, Epilepsy and severe allergies which may result in Anaphylaxis- if you

are in any doubt please ask the Head teacher. When necessary sun creams may

be sent with your child and they will be expected to apply it themselves as staff

are not allowed to do so.

School security

During the school day all visitors, including parents are asked to report to the

main school office. All visitors sign in and wear labelled passes. All external

doors are locked and only staff should open them to visitors- please do not ask

children to open them for you, a member of staff will never be far behind. At

the end of the school day teachers will only release a child from the classroom

when the child is collected by a parent or representative- please write on the

list in the classroom or ring school in advance if someone different is collecting

your child.

School Governors

The Governors elect the Chairperson, Vice-Chair and the co-opted members. The

parents, the teaching and non-teaching staff vote each for their

representatives. The term of office for each Governor is usually four years.

If you have a concern that cannot be resolved by the staff or the school, that

you wish to have raised at the Governing body meeting, then contact one of the

Parent Governors.

The full Governing body meets once each term unless there are matters which

require an extra meeting to be called.

The school has full delegation of it’s budget and works closely with the

Governing Body in the development and monitoring of the school.

Walk to school

If you do drive to school please be considerate of our neighbours at the start

and end of the school day and for your child’s safety do not park on the zig zag

markings. The roads around school become terribly congested- please walk part

or all of your journey to school

The Curriculum

12

5. Physical development, including skills in movement, sense of space, health

and bodily awareness, using tools and equipment.

6. Creative development, including exploring media and materials, music,

dance, using imagination and, expressing and communicating ideas.

Throughout the year we hold curriculum evenings for our parents to explain the

Foundation Stage Curriculum, teaching strategies and how parents can support

their children.

KEY STAGE 1

This stage begins for all children at the beginning of Year 1. All schools

providing for Key Stage 1 are required to teach a broad and balanced curriculum

including the ten National Curriculum subjects and Religious Education.

The ten National Curriculum subjects are:

English Music

Maths Art

Science History

Information Communication Technology Physical Education

Geography Design Technology

As part of the curriculum we also aim:

a) to promote the social, spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical

development of the pupils, and therefore have a Personal, Social, Health

Education curriculum including citizenship. (P.S.H.E.)

Page 13: BRAMLEY SUNNYSIDE INFANT SCHOOL ROTHERHAM S66 3QW · ROTHERHAM S66 3QW TELEPHONE NUMBER: 01709 543061 EMAIL: ... You can also visit the school web site on . 3 ... Red/ Yellow summer

13

b) to prepare the children for the next stage of their educational

development for opportunities, responsibilities and experience.

Throughout the year we hold curriculum evenings for our parents to explain the

Key Stage 1 Curriculum, teaching strategies and how parents can support their

children.

KEY STAGE 1 NATIONAL CURRICULUM SUBJECTS

CORE SUBJECTS

Literacy and English

Pupils develop skills in speaking and listening, reading and writing. They learn to

speak confidently and to listen to what others have to say thus enabling them to

express themselves creatively and imaginatively.

Pupils’ interest and pleasure in reading is developed as they learn to read

confidently and independently. They focus on words and sentences and how they

fit into whole texts. As their love of books, stories and poems develop they can

explore their own experiences and imaginary worlds.

Children’s handwriting skills are taught in a systematic way throughout school,

beginning with pattern work and mark making activities. A cursive script with

exit strokes for each letter of the alphabet is taught from Foundation Stage 1.

They learn to communicate meaning in narrative and non-fiction texts and spell

and punctuate correctly.

We ask that parents read to and with their children, answer their questions and

talk to them about everyday happenings.

Each class room has a class reading area containing a variety of fiction and non

fiction texts and the whole school has a reference library off the main hall.

Books of different genre are available with a wide variety of texts and range of

ability

Numeracy and Maths

14

The National Numeracy Strategy is firmly in place at Bramley Sunnyside. The

teachers and staff encourage children to develop their mental strategies during

maths lessons, by using practical apparatus progressing from mental methods to

written methods. Children are encouraged to develop problem solving techniques

and reasoning skills applying their mathematical knowledge to everyday tasks and

problems. Discussion plays an important role in learning and is always built into

the daily maths lesson. It is also necessary to understand that the emphasis for

5 – 9 year olds is more on mental work and somewhat less on recorded work, i.e.

doing rows and rows of ‘sums’.

Learning is focused on individual pupil needs and abilities making learning an

enjoyable and challenging experience encouraging children to become numerate

thinkers.

Science

Science at Bramley Sunnyside will enable all children from the time they enter

school to develop an understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Science is about children asking questions about the real world and finding the

answer through first hand experiences.

Science will also be integrated into all other areas of the curriculum.

Opportunities for promoting science investigations, discovery and experiences

will be taken at all times. Science has a very important place in the curriculum

and steps will be taken to ensure time is given to such exploration and to ensure

a steady progression in the skills and processes of scientific discovery.

15

Information Communication Technology (ICT)

Children are surrounded by Information Communication Technology in their

everyday life from mobile phones and DVD’s at home, to bar codes and cash

machines when they are out with the family.

Therefore, it is important that our children gain the appropriate skills,

knowledge and understanding to have the confidence and capability to use ICT

throughout their lives.

Within the Key Stage One Curriculum the children learn how to use a variety of

ICT equipment, which include computers, printers digital/video cameras,

programmable toys, microscopes and tape recorders. Our Interactive

Whiteboards and Computers in the classroom have also allowed ICT to continue

to promote teaching and learning across the curriculum to great effect.

All children have daily access to all of these electronic devices within their

classes. The use of ICT at Bramley Sunnyside is embedded into all other areas

of the curriculum to enhance learning.

FOUNDATION SUBJECTS

Design and Technology

Design and Technology is an important part of the curriculum and prepares

children for living and working in a technological world, it provides many

opportunities for problem solving and flexible thinking – important life skills.

History

We aim to fire pupil’s curiosity about the past in Bramley, Britain and the wider

world. Our children consider how the past influences the present, what past

societies were like, and how beliefs and cultures influenced peoples’ actions.

The children learn about peoples lives and lifestyles. They find out about

Page 16: BRAMLEY SUNNYSIDE INFANT SCHOOL ROTHERHAM S66 3QW · ROTHERHAM S66 3QW TELEPHONE NUMBER: 01709 543061 EMAIL: ... You can also visit the school web site on . 3 ... Red/ Yellow summer

16

significant men, women, children and events from the recent and more distant

past. We teach the children to listen and respond to stories, to ask and answer

questions and learn how the past is different to the present.

Geography

We aim to provide a broad spectrum of experiences for all children. These will

include experiences within the school and beyond our boundaries. The children

will be encouraged to develop skills to make sense of their own and distant

locations and environments. We encourage the children to have enquiring minds,

to find out reasons for, and the effects of events beyond and within their

environment. We are working towards the children being aware and taking care

of their immediate environment and the wider world.

Physical Education

All children have the natural desire to play, run, jump, and dance. PE, as part of

the school curriculum, should channel these desires through a variety of

movement activities. The emphasis will be on gymnastics, games and dance to

provide a foundation of basic movements and understanding.

Music

We aim to nurture a love of music. This involves developing many different

areas of experience for the children.

In the Foundation Stage, the children are encouraged to experiment with, and

explore, the musical instruments and use their voices to sing in a variety of

styles and situations, e.g. in class, in the hall assemblies, in performances and

Page 17: BRAMLEY SUNNYSIDE INFANT SCHOOL ROTHERHAM S66 3QW · ROTHERHAM S66 3QW TELEPHONE NUMBER: 01709 543061 EMAIL: ... You can also visit the school web site on . 3 ... Red/ Yellow summer

17

celebrations, and in the ‘outdoor classroom’. Music is also encouraged as a means

of self-expression.

In Years 1 and 2 the children learn, rather more formally but through enjoyable

activities, about rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre and the structure of

music. In class lessons and assemblies the children learn about different

composers and the families of instruments. We also encourage visits by

musicians to the school.

Art and Design

We aim to develop children’s creativity and imagination through providing art,

craft and design activities that relate to the children’s own identity and

experiences. They will also study the natural and manmade objects and

materials with which they are familiar and the locality in which they live.

Children will explore the visual, tactile and sensory qualities of materials and

processes and begin to understand and use colour, shape and space, and pattern

and texture to represent their own ideas and feelings. Children will focus on the

work of artists, craftspeople and designers by asking and answering questions

like “What is it like?” “What is it made from?” “How is it made?” “What do I

think and feel about it?”. Children are encouraged to evaluate their own work as

well as that of others. We are proud of our children’s artistic achievements and

this is reflected in the beautiful displays around school.

Religious Education – (which includes social, moral and spiritual education)

At Bramley Sunnyside the R.E. teaching and learning follows the requirements of

the Rotherham Agreed Syllabus. We aim to develop the spiritual, moral, social

and cultural awareness of all our children, encouraging them to become aware of

the needs of others and to reflect on themselves as members of our school

family and as part of the wider community.

Page 18: BRAMLEY SUNNYSIDE INFANT SCHOOL ROTHERHAM S66 3QW · ROTHERHAM S66 3QW TELEPHONE NUMBER: 01709 543061 EMAIL: ... You can also visit the school web site on . 3 ... Red/ Yellow summer

18

Our objective is that the children will take away something from the “rich

storehouse” of religious traditions having learnt about some aspects of

different religions.

(Parents have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious

Education and should put this in writing to the Headteacher. Children will be

provided with other activities during the withdrawal period).

Enhancement Weeks

Enhancement weeks take place termly which enrich the curriculum.

Sex Education

At this stage this clearly is an area for family responsibility and no explicit

teaching is given in school. Young children vary considerably in their experience

and levels of understanding and their questions often indicate what kind of

information they need. We do recommend that parents respond simply and

honestly when their child expresses interest at home as we will in school.

Personal, Social and Health Education including Citizenship(PSHE)

Whilst P.S.H.E. and Citizenship is non-statutory, we see it as an important part

of our school curriculum. Children grow up in a complex and ever fast changing

world and are exposed to an increasing range of influences. The school and its

curriculum aim to build on and complement the learning that has already started

at home, in relation to moral values, attitudes and awareness of society. We aim

to work in partnership with parents/carers in developing children personally and

emotionally and as young citizens.

School Council

The School Council was introduced to develop feelings of citizenship and to

involve all children to some extent in the running of the school. Regular

meetings are held by the council with our HLTA.

Children with Special Educational Needs

It is the aim of the school to meet the individual needs of each child. Sometimes

children will need the special help provided by experts outside the school staff.

We may need the help of the Speech Therapist, School Doctor, School

Psychologists or Support Teacher. These people are called to advise, help,

support and assist both teachers and parents when a child is experiencing a

particular need or problem. Parents are informed and involved in this process.

Special Educational Needs Policy

The school has adopted the three stages as laid down in the revised Code of

practice, which came into effect in January 2002. Parents are consulted at

every stage and no action will be taken without parental permission.

School Action

Page 19: BRAMLEY SUNNYSIDE INFANT SCHOOL ROTHERHAM S66 3QW · ROTHERHAM S66 3QW TELEPHONE NUMBER: 01709 543061 EMAIL: ... You can also visit the school web site on . 3 ... Red/ Yellow summer

19

A child is identified as having particular difficulties.

The class teacher will consult both parents and the SENCO and an Individual

education plan is drawn up to target the needs of the child.

School Action Plus

Further advice is sought from outside agencies such as the Learning Support

Services, Educational Psychology Service, Behaviour Support Service and the

Language Therapy Service. An Individual Education Plan will be drawn up and

specialist assessments may take place

Statement of Special Educational Needs

Following a request from the school or other agencies the LA will consider

whether or not to carry out a statutory assessment of the child. A statement

may then be issued by the LA who will decide upon the nature of levels of

provision to be made.

And finally…

Thank you for taking the time to read Bramley Sunnyside Infant School’s

prospectus. Should you need any further information please do not hesitate to

contact us.
