  • PPrreessiiddeennttss RReeppoorrtt Hello again everyone Unbelievably only one meeting to go in our championship already. Looking at the points the final meeting will be very exciting and tense for the drivers still in with a chance of winning overall. Hopefully calm heads will prevail and good clean close racing will be the highlight (you all know what I mean by now) Thank you to all our sponsor’s over the season Kuhmo Tyres Fresh To Go Tauranga Meat Packers And all other people who help financially and or donated their time to help create another successful season. With the AGM not too far away I trust you have all been talking about remits and other important voting matters. Thank you to Justin for all his work on organising this year’s AGM in Hamilton. Finally I will be standing down this year from my position on the Committee, I have (at times) enjoyed my time as President but my young family requires a bit more of my time these days. Thank you all for your support over the past years Yours sincerely Wayne T Davies

Working on the dangerous assumption that you have already read our general Brake Upgrade information pack (download from the right), here are a few specific points that Rodders may want to keep in mind. Firstly, one of the most common upgrades we see on classics and rods is the HQ/XW-XB front disc brake graft. Fine and dandy if HQ fronts are now considered a cool retro look, but in reality, they are now 35 year old technology. I doubt that you are going to fill your freshly built small block engine, using all the latest trick internal gear of course, with 30/40 motor oil from the seventies, so why not consider something a bit more up to date? We think that you will be quite pleasantly surprised at just how inexpensive some of the American Wilwood 4 pot calipers can be. Still, if you have your heart set on a pair of cast iron single pot calipers, we can get them working amazingly well for you. Secondly, most people assume that Australian and American drum brakes don’t work. They do, and well, but generally only once. The poor performance associated with drum brakes is usually because of bad adjustment as the self adjusters never seem to work properly. Drum brakes inability to stop repeatedly from high speeds is due to the drum brake friction materials used. Typically, drum brake compounds haven’t had the same levels of R&D thrown at them over the last three decades as their disc brake stablemates have. You will know by now, having made that dangerous assumption again, that upgraded drum brake compounds are available if you want to retain that original look. This is a real growth side of the hot rodding industry and a bonus to the classic car owners who want to combine originality with driveability. The racing drum brake compounds are excellent from cold with an improvement to handbrake operation. As a street compound, they work very much the same as standard materials but with higher temperature handling abilities, therefore able to withstand the rigors of repeated high speed braking. We don’t, however, recommend 4 wheel drum brakes for racing duties. Braided brake hoses, regardless of their ability to improve pedal feel, also look great on T-Buckets and other custom cars – which is really what it is all about anyway, isn’t it?

  • CClluubb CCaappttaaiinn CCaalllliinngg Afternoon Everybody I know it’s been said once but the handicapping at Hampton Downs was superb, no I didn't win a race! If I had of lapped more consistently I know I would have been in for a chance as would anybody. In fact, a big thank you to the handicappers for the whole season. A great meeting which I hope most enjoyed. The sun came again for Manfeild (boo, why won't it rain) and we enjoyed a good field and hard racing. Very hard in fact (even for the small bum on the Imp) which reminded of something Denny Hulme said years ago “if you can't pass without hitting someone you're not a very good driver". I know it can be difficult and we are racing but the idea is not to hit other cars, which shows a higher level of driver skill. I'm not counting myself as perfect either and have made driver error causing panel damage but it’s important to try not to hit cars if possible. Barbeque: Mike Johnston has come up with a great idea for the final barbeque of the season. Please bring a steak or chicken or what ever you like and we will cook it for you. Perhaps we can have a bit more of a social gathering rather than a sausage then off somewhere for dinner. Anybody got a Banjo? or maybe piano they want to bring. That’s all for now looking forward to seeing you all at Taupo. Der Kapitan

**Gary gets the Chocolate fish for the first Committee Member to send me his report!**

  • NNootteess ffrroomm NNooeelliinnee First of all, there has been some awesome racing lately - Hampton Downs at the beginning of February and then Manfeild at the end of the month. Congratulations to all those who had a great time and commiserations to those who felt they didn't. Remember you should all race hard but also look after each other and have fun doing it. We have one round left to go - Taupo at Easter - note that the closing date for entries is 17 March. It would be really great if we could have an even bigger field of cars for the last round of the season. For those of you who don't like my handicapping, I expect to see your nomination for the job at the AGM - and I know who you are - I have ears in all quarters. Don't forget to bring your trophies to Taupo, if you haven't already given them to Merv. Also, if you haven't already done so, please get your registration for the AGM dinner & Prizegiving to me - we need to know numbers ASAP. See you all at Taupo. Noeline

  • Series Articles P65 Pre65 Racing Saloons Inc. Annual General Meeting 26-May-2012 Series Articles Remit #1 20-Feb-2012 14. Penalties, Protests and Appeals

Original 14.2 Reverse Grid Races only: Unless notified prior by the competitor, and after

investigation by the Series Coordinator, Drivers breaking their best qualifying or race times at that round by more than 2 seconds on any lap will be excluded from the results of that race. New drivers to the track or if the weather conditions change between races, the Series Coordinator may withhold any penalty.

    Proposed

14.2 Reverse Grid Races only: Any Driver breaking their best time from either Qualifying or any preceding Race at that meeting by more than two (2) seconds (the ‘break-out time’) on any lap shall be excluded from the results of that Race, excepting that if: (1) The Driver is competing at that circuit for the first time, or (2) The Series Coordinator determines that the circuit condition has changed

significantly, due to either weather or atmospheric conditions, or any other reason, over the course of the meeting.

Then the Series Coordinator may, at their discretion, either amend the ‘break-out time’ to a maximum of five (5) seconds, or (in exceptional circumstances) waive the penalty altogether. The Series Coordinator must inform the Driver(s) of their decision as soon as practicable, but in any case shall be at least thirty (30) minutes prior to the start of the Race. Where Rule 14.2.2 is applied the published lap times for that race will take precedence over the starting positions as laid out in rule 10.5, these published lap times will apply to any subsequent race held under the same or similar circuit conditions that existed during the race as per 14.2.2.

  • ZZeepphhyyrr EEnnggiinnee It has come to my attention that there are a couple of members calling into question the legality of the ex-Tony Christenson MkIII Zephyr now owned by Campbell Gould. When the car was built the regs stated that the engine had to retain the same number of cylinders and the engine was from the same manufacturer as the car. Chudleigh was the Chief tech at the time and under the rules Chudleigh approved the fitment of the Falcon engine. At the June 2004 AGM a remit was passed to add the additional wording to the engine rule that said the engine had to come from the same country of manufacturer as the car. There was a further remit which included the camshaft as part of the engine, both of these remits had repercussions for the Zephyr but also the overhead can conversion on the ex-Justin Haworth Cortina. There were issues with getting the AGM minutes done and as President at the time, I wrote the minutes up which included a clarification on both Remits 1 (country of Origin) and Remit 5 (relocation of the camshaft). I have gone back thru the minutes and have copied to a PDF format a copy of the clarification.

As the Cortina was altered from the overhead configuration, the grandfather right was rescinded, however the Zephyr never was changed and the grandfather right still exists. The Zephyr is legal! If any one wishes to discuss the matter further come and talk to me! I have done some further research into local manufacturer, under the “KD” (Knocked Down rules), any car that had the agreed local content (generally between 50 to 60%) was regarded LEGALLY as being locally manufactured, and all vehicles assembled in NZ up to 1989 were built under The KD rules. Therefore the case can be made; that the country of origin for all these cars built in NZ is New Zealand, the same applies to AUSTRALIA and many other commonwealth countries around the world. This has implications on the country of origin rule, and will need some consideration. Alex DAVIE

RACE ONE Peter  Stevenson  had  a  great  start  from  the  outside  of  the  front  row  followed  by  Tony Elmiger off  row  two who made  the most of Bill McKinnon and Mark Pidduck  smoking up tyres.   Bill McKinnon  set  a new  lap  record  and  claimed  the win  from  Tony  Elmiger, Pete Stevenson,  Mark  Pidduck  and  Andrew  Alexander.  Mike  Johnstone  had  tyre  pressure problems and slowed  in the  later stages of the race.   GrahamLett started off the back and after one lap was up to the front half of the field, his charge to the front continued until his fuel supply issues reappeared.  Shane Hobman was class B winner with Chris Gunn who was 3½seconds  quicker  than  in  practice  second.    Errol Hamley  broke  an  axle  in  the  Triumph Vitesse and was unable to continue racing. The class C boys were in a very tight bunch.  Brad McDonald who had the race face on from lap one claimed the class C win from Steve Hallett and  James Cobham while Mark Bowskill had a  slow puncture which  robbed him of a  top finish and an electrical problem  stopping Freddy Rice  late  in  the  race.   Richard Hill  found

  • more speed in race one but was unable to catch class D winner Gary Rush, Dave Bone who found 4½seconds  in the  lunch break was 3rd with Robin Greenland 4th.   Owen Jenkins had clutch problems and was unable to start.

Race Two The scratch race on Saturday afternoon saw some very close racing and close  lap times so everyone was waiting  to  see what  the handicapper had  to  say.     As expected  there were some big bunches starting together.  The gearbox in the A40 of Richard Hill had failed in pre‐race warm up and was out for the rest of the day.  Dave Bone had the Cooper S flying early and was on the rev limiter in top gear going over the start finish line.  Andrew Hudson and Gary Rush were swapping places early while Mark Bowskill, James Cobham and Steve Hallett were  locked  in a  three car duel early  in  the  race.   Mitch Cobham was also picking up  the pace putting down his fastest lap time of the weekend on lap eight.   Robin Greenland had the  lead early and was driving  like he wanted to stay there.   Freddy Rice was  looking very fast and got to the lead only to give it away with a spin on turn one.  Chris Gunn had settled into Hampton Downs but his charge to the front was halted when he lost the fan belt.  Mark Pidduck was pushing hard with a  lot of sideways and smoking tyres going through the s’s. James Cobham was shown the mechanical black  flag on  lap 3 when a rocker cover gasket failed.  Mike Johnston, Graeme Lett and Bill McKinnon were all on the move from the back and got to the finish line first second and third.

RACE THREE Right from the flag drop Robin Greenland was chasing Owen Jenkins hard.   Owen held the lead until Robin proved that if you are good enough (or brave enough) you can pass around the outside on turn one.  Mike Johnston was trying very hard, using all his brakes and power through  the s’s.   Shane Hobman was also very keen  through  the s’s.   Brad McDonald and James Cobham were also on the move early. The Mark Bowskill Cortina developed a misfire, investigations after  the race  found  the alternator wires had  fallen off.   Chris Gunn parked the  Valiant when  the  fan  belt  disappeared  again.    James  Cobham,  Andrew  Hudson  and Andrew Alexander were on  the charge early  in  this  race with both Andrews posting  their best  lap time of the weekend  in  lap 2.   Alan Power who was another driver having his first skid  in  the Waikato was also  improving his  times all weekend unfortunately ended  race 3 with dings in both ends of the Anglia.  Bill McKinnon, Mike Johnston and Graeme Lett were heading towards the front by using the old trick in handicap races; pass then as soon as you catch  them.   Bill McKinnon got  the  race and class A win, with Graeme Lett  first  in class B while  James  Cobham  claimed  his  first  class  C  win  in  at  least  12  years  with  Gary  Rush completing a very successful weekend with the class D win.

Spy on the Bank’s Drive of the Weekend This weekend we cannot look past three notable events. Gary Rush  in Class D.   Holds the class  lap record, fastest  in qualifying and three class wins.     There were five entries in this class this weekend, the largest all season.   Bill McKinnons new lap record, fastest in qualifying and two race wins. The Race organising committee who have decided  that we only need one warm up  lap.  I heard a lot of positive comment and no negative comment about this decision.

    ROUND SIX MANFIELD AUTO COURSE

Fine weather and a dry track greeted the twenty two cars that were in the pits for round six of the KUMHO TYRES PRE65 Racing Saloon North Island Championship.  Ray Hurst was again visiting  from  Rakaia with  the  Anglia while Mike  Annabell was  having  his  first  run  of  the season  in  the EJ Holden.   The  racing has been close all  season and with only  two  rounds remaining there were six drivers still with a chance of winning the title.

QUALIFYING Six V8 cars went out to qualify.   Bill McKinnon had the Chev Nova on race pace early and was more  than 2  seconds quicker  than 2nd  fastest Mike  Johnston. They were  followed by Tony  Elmiger, Mark  Pidduck,  Peter  Stevenson  and Andrew Alexander.    Tony  Elmiger  and Peter Stevenson were both bedding in brakes so the best was yet to come.  Class B had five entries.   Chris Gunn withdrew his entry after he  found a blown head gasket  in warm up.  Quickest was Graeme Lett from Shane Hobman 2nd Mike Annabell 3rd with Bruce Goodwin 4th.  For the second meeting in a row Mark Bowskill showed the Class C drivers the fast way around the track.  Brad McDonald, James Cobham and Mark Stretton were in a tight bunch for 2nd, 3rdand 4th.  Mitch Cobham, Andrew Hudson and Ray Hurst rounded out the class.  In Class D Richard Hill had a good gearbox again and was more  than 1  second quicker  than Gary Rush.  Dyno testing for the Robin Greenland Morris Cooper revealed that it had 66 HP at the wheels qualified 3rd while Owen Jenkins completed the grid.

Race One It was all on when the red  lights went out. Mike  Johnston who was on the outside of the front row smoked up the tyres which allowed Tony Elmiger to follow Bill McKinnon into the first corner, the few car lengths Mike gave away were more than the 8/10’s of a second that separated  the  two  at  the  finish.   Mitch  Cobham, Mark  Stretton  and  Richard  Hill  came together on what was a very congested turn one. Graeme Lett did very well to save the PB Vauxhall  from  spinning  at  the  hairpin.    Shane  Hobman  broke  an  axle  early  and  James Cobham  also  had  a DNF with  gear  selection  problems.    There were  several  races within races going on with Mark Bowskill and Brad McDonald  swapping places.   Pete Stevenson and  Andrew  Alexander  close  all  race.  What  Mike  Annabell  in  the  Holden  lost  to  the Thunderbird of Mark Pidduck in a straight line he certainly gained on the turns and at race end the cornering speed of the Holden prevailed over the bigger HP of the Ford.  The closest of all was the duel between Ray Hurst and Robin Greenland with only 5/100th of a second between the two at the finish line.  Class A and race win went to Bill McKinnon followed by Tony Elmiger and Mike Johnston.   First  in Class B was Graeme Lett with Mike Annabell 2nd and Bruce Goodwin 3rd. Mark Bowskill continued his good form to claim the Class C victory over Brad McDonald 2nd and an improving Andrew Hudson 3rd.  In Class D Gary Rush had got by Richard Hill to claim the class D win with Rodin Greenland 3rd.

RACE TWO The first of the handicap races saw a number of  incidents that can mostly be put down to driver  error.   Owen  Jenkins was  away  first  followed  by  Ray Hurst  and  Robin Greenland, yesterdays close racing between these two continued until the fan belt went on Rays Anglia and Robins Mini dropped a cylinder.  Mark Bowskill who was very quick off the start line was chased hard by Brad McDonald.  Andrew Hudson and Gary Rush were making the most of a clear track and  looking  for the  front spot.   Then  it all happened  James Cobham accidently turned off the  ignition while changing gear, Graeme Lett had a very similar problem.   Brad McDonald spun coming  into the  front straight, Bill McKinnon spun at the hairpin trying to pass Tony Elmiger who in turn spun at Higgins while trying to affect an outside pass on Mike Johnston who received a mechanical black flag for a  loose front suspension.   All cars were able  to  recover  for  some  points  except  the  Elmiger Mustang which  had  suffered  panel damage  to  the  front  and  rear when  it  hit  the  safety  fence.    Race  victory went  to Mark Pidduck who also claimed the Class A win from Andrew Alexander 2nd and Pete Stevenson 3rd.Shane Hobman was first in Class B followed by a hard charging Mike Annabell and a very smooth and consistent Bruce Goodman 3rd.Andrew Hudson who was 6thoverall held out a very  fast  finishing Mark Bowskill  for  the Class C win with Brad McDonald  3rd. Gary Rush finished  a  strong  3rd  overall  and  1st  in  Class  D.    Richard  Hill  who  was  having  gear  box problems again finished a very creditable 8th overall and 2nd in class.  Owen Jenkins who set his fastest lap time of the weekend on lap six was 13th overall and 3rd in class.

RACE THREE The  last  race was  a  chance  for  a  few drivers  to make up  for  their morning  indiscretions.  James Cobham, Richard Hill and Bill McKinnon were all on a mission.  Andrew Alexander and Mike Annabell were both on race pace early. Up the front Ray Hurst and Owen Jenkins were having  their  own  race  while  Tony  Elmiger  was  finding  the  very  wide  Chrysler  of Mike Johnston hard to pass. Richard Hill (who had put his best socks on) had the A 40in the lead by lap five was followed closely by James Cobham. Brad McDonald and Mark Bowskill both slowed with gearbox problems and the Holden of Mike Annabell was down on power late in the race.  Bill McKinnon got to the front in the last half of the last lap to claim the race win, Andrew Alexander who had his best race of the weekend was 2ndin Class A. Peter Stevenson was  3rd  in  class  Aand  5th  across  the  line.    Class  B  honours went  to  Shane  Hobman1st, Graeme  Lett  2nd  and Bruce Goodwin  taking  the  3rd  step on  the podium.    James Cobham saved his best until last race.  His best lap time of the weekend was on lap two.  He was 3rd across the line and 1st in Class C.  Mark Stretton who also had his best race was 2nd with Brad McDonald 3rd.  The Class D win went to Richard Hill who was 4th over the line with Gary Rush 2nd and Owen Jenkins 3rd.

The Spy on the bank drive of the weekend award This weekend goes to all PRE65 Racing Saloon Club Officials, Drivers and Members. We had the largest field, the biggest variety of cars, the most action and passing on the track. I guess what I am saying is what a great club to be part of.

  • Championships Far From Decided By Justin Haworth

Going into the final round at Easter in Taupo we have the very rare scenario of the top 5 drivers separated by less than 10 points. This has not happened in recent history of the club and most probably never has happened in our series. The championship is very tight in most of the classes also, so here is just a little preview of the situation we have for the final round! Bring it on! Overall As noted above and excluding the drivers with a “mathematical” chance of the championship title, the top 5 overall drivers are separated by just 9 points. Heading the group is rear disc brake campaigner and former Class B champion Mike Johnston in the big Plymouth. Just 3 points back is another Whanganui Chrysler V8 driver Andrew Alexander in his AP6 Valliant. Keeping them honest and just 4 points adrift from Andrew is two-time defending series champion and gold card holder Bill McKinnon in the Nova, Bill will be keen for a back to back championship to join an exclusive club (Collier, Sprague, Haworth, Stevenson). Only 3 Points back from Billy we have Higgins Corners own Tony Elmiger flying the Ford flag in the Mustang. Tony hopes to go one place better than last season. Rounding out the top 5 with possibly the best & most consistent drive of the series, as well as the only 6 cylinder car amongst the V8s, Graeme Lett in the ex Alex Davie Vauxhall PB. The series is literally there for the taking for any of these drivers. No pressure boys. Good luck to you all. Class A Bill McKinnon has a reasonable buffer of 26 class points going in to the final round. The real battle will be for the bridesmaid title with both Johnston & Elmiger sharing 372 apiece. Quite a gap back in 4th is Alexander who still has a fighting chance for a trophy. Class B Consistency looks to be the key to doing well in Class B. Early leader Tim Patterson has missed the last couple of meetings, in doing so has almost certainly handed the title to Lett. 36 Points adrift is Shane Hobman with a mathematical chance of a class win, leaving Patterson in 3rd. I predict that is how it will finish. Class C An excellent season sees Brad McDonald in his Anglia holding a slim 10 point lead from Mark Batman Bowskill in his immaculate (except after Manfeild) Cortina. Andrew Hudson bringing up third spot and with a sporting chance just 24 points behind Bowskill. This one will go down to the wire too. Class D Dominant Class D Driver Richard Hill is has his nose in front going into the final round with a respectable 28 point buffer to Gary Rush in his Imp. Gary has been slightly quicker than Richard in the last few rounds and with the Richards A40 struggling for reliability it could be interesting! So keep an eye out on this battle. Morris Minor Pilot Owen Jenkins has all but secured 3rd place, with Tokoroa’s Dave Bone well back to fourth.

  • TTHHAANNKKSS ☺☺ The Thunderbird Team (albeit a small one) would like to thank Samuel (Mitch Cobham’s grandson) for always giving us a hand when we arrive at the track. An extra pair of hands makes a huge difference, especially if we are under a bit of pressure (as we were at Manfeild on Saturday!). Cheers for helping out Sam, we really appreciate it! Jo & Mark

GGOOSSSSIIPP!! At the All Ford day in Mt Maunganui Mr Elmiger told me about….. Racing Ghosts Apparently he didn’t realise that Billy had fallen off at the hair pin at Manfeild – so – as he headed into Higgins he ‘had a feeling’ that Billy was coming down the left side of his car. He couldn’t see him but he decided that he must beat him into the corner………….. And we all know what happened next!

In a Tottenham gospel church Sunday morning a preacher said, "Anyone with 'special needs' who wants to be prayed over, please come forward to the front by the altar." With that, Leroy got in line, and when it was his turn, the Preacher asked, "Leroy, what do you want me to pray about for you?" Leroy replied, "Preacher, I need you to pray for help with my hearing. "The preacher put one of his fingers in Leroy's ear, then he took his other hand and placed it on top of Leroy's head; and then he prayed and prayed and eventually the whole congregation joined in with great enthusiasm. After a few minutes, the preacher removed his hands, stood back and asked, "Leroy, how is your hearing now? "Leroy answered, "I don't know. It ain't 'til Thursday."

James kindly offered up this gem of information to me coming back in after a race – He had accidently hit the kill switch with his elbow as he went to change gear after rounding Dunlop chasing the chequered flag….

#2 Graeme Lett (Just a wee rumour I heard…) Apparently Graeme also accidently hit the kill switch and that was why he was temporarily parked up in the front straight. Is that what happened Graeme?
