What is Brake Horsepower?
• Short form:BHP• Amount of work generated by a motor • Not taking any things that can slow or
make the car go faster into consideration• how fast an engine can work • Referred as pure horsepower• Usually used in Britain
Difference between BHP and HP
• BHP is more “pure” than horsepower• BHP sometimes tends to be more than
HP( Bugatti Veyron generates 1020 bhp but only 1001 hp)
• HP is the output horsepower rating of an engine, while BHP is the input brake horsepower of an engine
Difference between BHP and HP
• HP: Measurement with power loss or modifications
• BHP: Measurements without power loss or modifications
• Measurement method:• HP: hooking up the engine to a
dynamometer • BHP: measured in a controlled
environment without anything attached to the engine
Equation to other units
• Brake horsepower is measure of watts produced at the crankshaft of the engine
• 1 horsepower= 745.7 watts• 1 BHP is like 1 horse pulling something
How to measure
• Originally: use of a band brake to measure torque
• Now: put car on a dynomometer (a dyno) and get true at-the-wheel readings
Formula
OR
Road legal cars that generates lots of BHP
• Bugatti Veyron: 1020bhp
• Lamborghini Murcielago: 640bhp
