Engage at Every Age

At Surrey, we love to celebrate accomplishments – large and small. This month provides us with a special reason to celebrate. May is Older Americans month! We have a lot to celebrate in Pennsylvania because more than 32% of our population is older than 55. To put this in perspective Pennsylvania has one of the highest populations over 55 in the country.

This year’s slogan is Engage at Every Age, meaning you are never too old (or too young) to take part in activities that can enrich your physical, mental and emotional well being. I think this describes Surrey perfectly. We have volunteers and members who are constantly trying new things at all different points in their lives. It is rewarding to hear how much participants of More Fun with Opera & Classical Music in Devon en-joy the class. Voice First Technology May Be the New Toaster Voice First is the new “hot” technology but it’s more than just a fad. This technology learns to recognize your voice so by speaking a request or command a device will remember or take care of it for you. It is available commercially through devices offered by Amazon, Apple, Google and Microsoft with names like Alexa and Siri.

You can set reminders, send messages, have email read to you and search for information by speaking. Most of the Voice First Technology devices have the capability to work with other types of electronic adaptive technology to do tasks including turning on lights, opening shades, changing the thermostat and turning on the TV.

Individuals who will really benefit from this tech-nology are those who have challenges with physical movement, eyesight or hearing. Fur-thermore, the technology can be designed to send information, such as prescriptions, ad-dresses or shopping lists to others as a way of sharing information and jobs. Here are a few more examples of how this tech-nology can make your life easier: "Remind me to take my medicine." When it's time, your device will let you know. "Send a message to Bob and tell him I'm run-ning late." A way to communicate when you are driving instead of fumbling to dial or text. "Add milk to the grocery list." Keeping up on the grocery list is much easier when you just tell your technology what to add. When you get to the store, your list will be on your device ready and waiting for you. If someone else does your shopping, you can simply share your list for easy access. Costs for the basic technology can range from $50 to several thousand depending on the level of services needed.

Tips for Traveling When Your Loved One Has Dementia Before planning a trip with someone with de-mentia, do an honest assessment of their cur-rent condition. If they become overwhelmed in new situations, in large groups of people or they wander frequently traveling may make these symptoms worse. However, if they are in the early stage of dementia a trip may be a pleasant change for you both.

If you decide to travel, use these tips to plan. • Traveling to someplace familiar may be

more enjoyable than going somewhere new. • Allow extra time and avoid rushing. Stress

can cause increased anxiety or agitation. • Carry snacks/beverages and bring activities

your loved one will enjoy, such as music. • If flying, schedule your trip for less busy

travel times to avoid crowds. Travel early in the day to decrease the chance of delays and book nonstop flights if possible. Request a window or middle seat to reduce chances of wandering.

• If driving, seat the person in the back seat with the door locked, seat belt on (use child proof locks). Play music that the person en-joys. If the person becomes agitated, stop driving!

• Make sure the person with dementia has identification on them explaining he or she has a memory impairment and includes a phone number to contact in case he/she becomes separated from you.

• You should carry a photograph of your loved one in case he or she becomes lost. Also carry your government issued identification.

• Keep medicines, a list of any medical issues and emergency contacts with you at all times.

• If staying in a hotel, book a room with two beds and don’t leave the person in a room alone.

• Bring night lights, doorknob covers or any other safety equipment you use at home.

• If a hotel room has small appliances, i.e. a hairdryer, unplug them to prevent injury.

• Plan extra rest periods, including a daily nap if needed.

• Maintain as close to a normal wake/sleep schedule as possible.

Traveling with someone with dementia can be a pleasant break from your normal routine if you plan ahead. If you would like additional care op-tions for your loved one, please call Surrey Home Care Services at 610-647-9840.

What is Aging Life Care? May is National Aging Life Care Professionals month (formally known as Geriatric Care Manag-ers). Surrey’s Aging Life Care Professionals assist clients with a variety of challenges including: guidance with caregiving issues such as finding appropriate housing or in-home care; providing referrals to medical professionals or elder law attorneys; offering advocacy and support, such as bringing clients to medical visits. One of the most valued services they provide is working as a liaison between client, medical professionals and the client’s family, who are often out of state. This service provides peace of mind to the client and his or her family. A care plan, tailored for each person’s circum-stances, is prepared after a comprehensive as-sessment. If you would like more information about this program or would like to set up a free 30-minute consultation, please call Home Care Services at 610-647-9840.

Try Grains for Summer Meals When the weather gets warm, few people want to heat their kitchen or themselves by preparing a hot meal. However, sometimes cool dishes, like salad or fruit, are not very filling because they don’t contain protein. A great solution for this dilemma are dishes made with whole grains.

Whole grains such as barley, wild rice and bulgar wheat are commonly included in warm dishes like soups and stews. Others, such as quinoa (pronounced keen-wa), farro and buckwheat, have surged in popularity recently thanks to their nutritional value and high fiber content.

They are part of a healthy diet and nutritional guidelines recommend 3 to 5 servings of whole grains every day. The good news is that these grains are very easy to prepare. Cook a batch, let it cool overnight and you have a great foundation for a filling, warm-weather meal. Here are some ideas: • Mix cooked quinoa with chopped veggies, a

sprinkle of feta cheese, some chopped wal-nuts and toss with a light vinaigrette. Serve chilled.

• Top cooked farro with blueberries, Greek yogurt, toasted almonds and a drizzle of honey for a delicious breakfast or brunch.

• Combine cooked and cooled wild rice, dried cranberries and toasted pecans with a rasp-berry vinaigrette.

It’s almost impossible to create a bad combina-tion. Choose your favorite fruits, veggies, cheese or nuts and give grains a try!

Shred It! Personal Finance Corner By: Jacky Kennedy Sisson Surrey’s Personal Finance Manager Spring is here! Perhaps, over the winter or this spring you have been doing some cleaning out and now have a stack of papers that need proper dis-posal. Not sure if they need to be shredded? Keep in mind that anything with an account number or social security number (even the last four digits) should be shredded. This includes account num-bers for credit cards, utilities, banks, investment accounts, etc. Pre-approved credit card offers should also be shredded. When cleaning out medi-cal files, be sure to shred any confidential medical information. Although some people shred any-thing with their name or address, this is really not necessary. Name and address information is pub-lic knowledge and can be easily obtained. A small shredder can be used to dispose of papers, but cleaning out files may result in a large amount of papers to shred. There’s no need to spend hours shredding papers at home. This is the time of year when there are free public shred events. Just bring the papers to one of these events and have them shredded on site. It should be noted that there is a limit in terms of the amount of pa-pers that will be accepted at these events. Gener-ally, the limit is several bags or a copier paper size box. Here are some local events: State Representative Charlton’s District Office 905 W. Sproul Rd Suite 203, Springfield, PA 19064

• May 19, 2018 8 – 12 Please limit shredding to 2 boxes per person.

Bryn Mawr Trust (all events are from 9:00-Noon) • May 19 at the Wayne branch • June 2 at the Bryn Mawr branch • June 23 at the Media branch If you miss these free events, keep an eye on your newspaper since events are often listed in the local papers. Finally, if you have too much to take to a free event, then consider a shredding service. Sta-ples stores offer a shredding service for 99 cents per pound and the papers can be taken to any Sta-ples location. If you are feeling overwhelmed with the amount of paperwork you need to get organized, call Surrey’s Personal Finance Manager, Jacky Kennedy Sisson, at 610-647-9840. She can help you get started and give you guidance regarding key paperwork reten-tion and filing.

Senior Games Offer Something for Everyone Each spring Chester and Delaware counties host events to celebrate Older Americans Month. One of the most popular are the Senior Games, contests modeled after sports competitions. While there are some athletic events, like track and swimming, many of the competitions are just for fun.

In Chester County for example, there are contests in everything from BINGO to bocce and most events take place during one day (May

17). The Chester County Senior Games also fea-tures a picnic and vendor expo for attendees. Delaware county holds events in numerous cate-gories including pickle ball and swimming. The celebration lasts more than one week to accom-modate all the events. “These games are all about community, meeting new people and hav-ing fun. There is no pressure.” says Kathy Hen-derson, Center Director at Surrey Media, who helps organize the games for Delaware County. For information about possible carpooling or transportation to games, please contact your center director or call Mary in Member Services at 484-321-6102.
