Established 1996

Research themes

(1) Biology & evolution unicellular eukaryotes (protists)(2) Short- and longterm dynamics of freshwater and marine ecosystems(3) Microalgal biotechnology

e.g. biotic interactions in microbial food webs (e.g. microalgae-bacteria, grazing), dynamics of estuarine and marine microplankton and microphytobenthos communities, diversity ecosystem function relationships, role of dispersal and local adaptation for spatial and temporal dynamics microlagal populations, diatom cell and life cycles

As been involved in ocean acidification :

Frankignoulle and Gattuso papers the 1990’s papers highlighted the negative effects of ocean acification on coral reef calcification

Delille et al. (2005) paper reports one of the first large scale multidisciplinary mesocom experiments looking into ocean acidification effects on pelagic comunities

Borges & Gypens (2010) paper highlights for the first time specific evolution of ocean acidification in coastal environments
