Curriculum Content
A. LOC Lesson 8 Reading Practice (1 hour)
Objective BS35.1: Demonstrate proofreading skills through a reading practice in simulated
braille.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with Lesson8 pertaining to whole-word lower-sign contractions for to, into, and by, part-word lower-sign contractions for bb, cc, dd, ff, gg, and ea, and the short-form words for about, above, because, below, first, and great.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
The instructor will have the students open their LOC Manual to page 8-9 for the Reading Practice. This Reading Practice will help the students to read simulated braille to another student. Remind the students that good proofreading skills are imperative to produce
clear, concise braille for the reader.
As a class the students will practice reading braille out loud by taking turns reading each
sentence. This practice helps the students to realize the importance of sight to speech aids
which are very significant in the braille learning process. After each one has read through
the practice they are to write out the sentences in longhand.
This activity also helps the students to learn some valuable proofreading and teamwork
skills. When they are completed they are expected to compare their longhand with the
answers found in Appendix A at the back of the LOC Manual.
ASSESSMENT
The goal of the activity is to build good visual skills of the dot formations, proofreading
skills, and teamwork. The instructor will be able to assess the students work through
listening to the students read and evaluating their papers.
B. LOC Lesson 8 Exercise (2 hours)
ObjectiveBS35.2: Demonstrate usage of computer skills working with Perky Duck for
exercise transcription.
Objective BS35.3: Submission of LOC Lesson 8 Exercise with 90% accuracy.
PROFITT Curriculum Module # 35—LOC Lesson 8 Assessment
Braille Module 35-5
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with the Lesson 8 Exercise on page 8-9.The LOC
Manual: Lesson 8: Exercise is a hands-on test of the students’ knowledge. LOC Manual:
Lesson 8 Exercise includes whole-word lower-sign contractions for to, into, and by, part-
word lower-sign contractions for bb, cc, dd, ff, gg, and ea, and the short-form words for
about, above, because, below, first, and great and covers the areas studied in this lesson.
You will need copies of: Exercise 8 (photo copies).
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
The instructor will pass out the photo copies and read the instructions to the class. Allow
time to answer any questions. Instruct the students to take their time formatting the
photocopy prior to transcription.
The instructor will explain that the Exercise is a list of 49 complete sentences for the
students to braille on Perky Duck.
ASSESSMENT
The expected outcome of the LOC Manual: Lesson 8 Exercise is for students to pass and
continue on to Lesson 9.
The Instructor will assess each student by the passing grade. The students are required
to pass this exercise with 90% accuracy.
C. Evaluation by the Instructor (1 hour)
Objective BS35.4: Evaluation by the instructor.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with the Lesson 8: Worksheet (35.C.3).
You will need copies of: Lesson 8: Puzzle (35.C.1), Answers to Lesson 8: Puzzle (35.C.2), Lesson 8: Worksheet (35.C.3) and Answers to Lesson 8: Worksheet
(35.C.4).
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
The instructor will pass out a Lesson 8: Worksheet (35.C.3) to each student. The
students can work on these as the instructor takes one student at a time to evaluate their
progress.
PROFITT Curriculum Module # 35—LOC Lesson 8 Assessment
Braille Module 35-6
The Lesson 8: Worksheet (35.C.3) was created for the students to practice structuring
and brailling. The instructor will read the instructions to the class. An answer sheet is
included.
When the class settles down with the handouts the instructor will take each student aside
to talk about their work, behavior, and review any significant information.
The evaluation allows the instructor the opportunity to assess the areas the students may
have to review in the following weeks for clarification so the students will be able to better
refine their braille skills.
D. Contraction Summary (1 hour)
ObjectiveBS35.5: Review the Summary of Contraction Usage.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with the summary at the end of Lesson 8.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
As a class read and discuss the Summary of Contraction Usage, parts III-V page 8-12
about Lower Signs.

Lesson 8: Worksheet (35.C.3)
Structure and braille this page on Perky Duck. Remember: to center the heading Tonisha and Ingred.
1. Check which cell your text will start in. Then write that number above the sentence.
2. Highlight all the contractions you will be using that you have learned so far. Write the contraction you will use over the word.
3. Count every cell you will need until you get to the number 40, which is how many cells in a braille line. Remember that some characters will use more than one cell and contractions will use less cells.
PROOFREAD you own work prior to handing it to another student.
Tonisha and Ingred
Tonisha and Ingred lived at the SeaCliff Apartments and the address is on Disraeli St. They have been best friends since Ingred's family moved there. Tonisha helped her to readjust to living in the states. They liked to wear headdresses, drink tea, and eat
pineapple because they wanted to write a How-To Book.
Bobby To, Ingred's beau, was the sheriff's son. He was a slugger when it came to baseball. His genealogy was subterranean European. Bobby's lineage is very strange, but it wasn't like he could delineate from it. He liked to meander to the office and use the
dumbbells. The gym was on the floor below, which had great effects on his muscles.
One day Bobby To went to Ingred's house and stiffly asked her father for her hand in marriage. To everyone's surprise he got on one knee and gave Ingred a gigantean ring! Ingred and Tonish were so excited. They had already spent hours talking about weddings. Ingred would be the first child in her family to get married. It would be a
great wedding.
The girls had so many creative ideas. Ingred decided to have southeastern succotash and coffee at the reception in the theater. They will offer saccharine and sugar. The ceremony would be on the pebbled seashore and instead of throwing rice the guests
blew bubbles.
The sea-island wedding took place at ebb-tide and the affect was beautiful. Ingred's Daddy walked her down the aisle, as her Mother's efforts to not sniffle didn't last long. It was the ideal wedding. Their efforts were not in vain. Some of the other ladies were full of oleaginous flattery though, but that didn’t matter. By now they were just
jealous. Tonisha and Ingred were not into that kind of dabbling.
It was a different kind of way to tie the knot. But no one was uneasy or distant. It was mystic-like and seemed make-believe. Ingred and Bobby To left by train at 5 o'clock to go on their honeymoon. It was a very lovely day!
