Evergreens Michael Petrov cello
Brahms - Variations on a Theme of Haydn Shostakovich - Cello Concerto
Dvořák - Symphony No.8
Welcome to our opening concert of the season. Brahms’s influence on Dvořák is well documented. So tonight we will feature a classic work by both composers. We open with Brahms’s wonderful Variations on a Theme by Haydn. This work revels in the forms of the past and Brahms’s passion for these structures. Composed in 1889 and premièred the following year, Dvořák’s Symphony No.8 has a lyrical and sprightly outlook that is full of vitality and inspiration drawn from his beloved Bohemian folk music. We are extremely pleased to welcome Young Classical Artists Trust performer, Michael Petrov to perform Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.1. Michael Petrov has been wowing audiences internationally with his “meltingly warm, smooth tone and easy virtuosity.” He has performed with many of the top classical orchestras to rave reviews. A rising star not to be missed.

Orchestral Developments Dania Alzapiedi violin
Vivaldi - The Four Seasons Haydn - Symphony No.101, ‘The Clock’
Kodály - Variations on a Hungarian Folksong, ‘The Peacock’
Music education is extremely important for all, so tonight we are performing three works that are part of the current GCSE and A-Level curriculum. We are excited to welcome back the hugely talented violinist, Dania Alzapiedi, to perform possibly the most famous Baroque concertos of all time: Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, a work that has inspired musicians and thrilled audiences across the world. Joseph Haydn's Symphony No.101, nicknamed ‘The Clock’, opens the second half of our concert and we close with Zoltán Kodály’s Variations on a Hungarian Folksong, ‘The Peacock’. Kodály is one of 20th-century Hungary’s most important and engaging composers, whose music is unfailingly warm-hearted and beautifully crafted. The folk-music flavouring that colours much of it makes for strong, direct audience appeal.

Romantic Flair Kathy Seabrook flute
Beethoven - Egmont Overture Nielsen - Flute Concerto
Tchaikovsky - Symphony No.5
To close our season we will perform three popular classics. Popular local flautist, Kathy Seabrook, joins us to perform Carl Nielsen’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra. Written in 1926, the concerto has become a standard of the flute repertoire. Look out for the brash interruptions by the bass trombone! We open our concert with Beethoven’s evergreen overture, Egmont. The overture and nine incidental pieces were written for a play by Goethe. Dramatic, heroic music to the fore in Beethoven’s own, inimitable style. We close our season with Tchaikovsky’s most popular symphony, his Fifth. Composed in 1888, the work perfectly demonstrates Tchaikovsky’s ability to conjure and develop some of the most memorable melodies of all time. Come and bask in the glorious hues of this wonderful work.

To Tell a Story! Lara James saxophone
Tchaikovsky - Marche Slave Op.31 Martin Romberg - The Tales of Taliesin (UK première)
Ravel - Ma Mère L’Oye Tchaikovsky - The Sleeping Beauty Suite
Music and stories have always been inextricably linked. Tonight we invoke those spirits by looking at three orchestral favourites and a UK première. We are very proud to be introducing the music of the Norwegian composer Martin Romberg to the UK. We welcome the internationally respected soloist, Lara James, to perform Romberg’s symphonic poem for alto saxophone and large orchestra, The Tales of Taliesen. The work is based on the poems of the renowned Brythonic poet, Taliesin. Maurice Ravel composed Ma Mère L’Oye as a suite of five pieces for piano duet. Ravel then orchestrated the suite and it is one of his most exquisite creations. We open and close our concert with two of Tchaikovsky’s most popular works: Marche Slave and Sleeping Beauty. We will perform the popular suite from Sleeping Beauty, which contains the wonderful melodies that we all love.
Don’t miss Josephine Peach’s entertaining and informative pre-concert talks, starting at 6.30pm in the main hall (details overleaf)

Kathy Seabrook flute Kathy is well known in Scarborough as a long-time member of the Scarborough Spa Orchestra - but she has had a very varied professional career from Scottish Opera to ‘Me & My Girl’, from The London Wind Quartet to the Malaga Philharmonic and from Radio One to the South Bank.
