ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
It has been a wonderful year of our collaboration with SPIE which
has helped us to enrich our knowledge in photonics, optics, bio-
medical engineering, digital image processing and several other
fields of physics and electronics. Within this one year we have
organized several seminars and talks by eminent professors and
lecturers from renowned universities of various countries and they
have enlightened us on different topics. Apart from this some
educational tours were organized by our chapter for our chapter
members. Hope we keep enjoying our association with the chapter
and keep learning more and increase our knowledge.

Student Chapter members actively participated in Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India sponsored INSPIRE Science Camp.
The basic objectives of INSPIRE are to attract talented young students of high school to undertake Science studies at an early stage and to help build the required critical human research & development base of our Nation . It is a program with along term foresight.
The camp was coordinated by Prof. Indrani Bhattacharya supported by faculty members of IEM. SPIE student chapter members were actively involved in setting up the laboratories related to basic sciences and conduced lab classes including robotics and with a special emphasis on light based experiments.
Around 160 students of Class XI, with SCIENCE background, from various schools all over Kolkata and other district as well participated In this camp
ORGANISED ANNUAL PICNIC OF STUDENTS CHAPTER ON 12th FEBRUARY, 2017
Members of UEM student chapters initiated annual picnic to promote the mixing and exchange of thoughts between the student chapter members. It is being carry forward by the UEM student chapter members amidst the nature, at Aich’s Bunglow , Maheshwarpur, Madhyamgram on 12th

PARTICIPATION IN LECTURE SESSIONS
• “ROSETTA : To CATCH A COMET” by Sir Mark Maccaughrean on 13th February 2017.
• Prof Mark McCaughrean is the Senior Advisor for Science & Exploration at the European Space Agency (ESA). He is also responsible for communicating results from ESA’s astronomy, heliophysics, planetary, exploration, and fundamental physics missions to the scientific community and wider general public. Following a PhD from the University of Edinburgh, he worked at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre, followed by astronomical institutes in Tucson, Heidelberg, Bonn, and Potsdam, and taught as a professor of astrophysics at the University of Exeter before joining ESA in 2009. His personal scientific research involves observational studies of the formation of stars and their planetary systems, and he is also an Interdisciplinary Scientist for the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope.
PARTICIPATION IN LECTURE SESSIONS
• In this talk, he gave a behind-the-scenes view of the mission, its history, the 10-year journey to reach the comet, and the exciting events that took place during more than 2 years of operations there, before ending in September 2016. He talked about some of the challenges and risks involved in the mission, and gave some insights into the key scientific findings revealed to date about the formation of our solar system, the origins of water, and perhaps even life on Earth.
• The European Space Agency operates and is partner in a fleet of spacecraft studying the Sun and its planets, and collecting photons across the electromagnetic spectrum, from corners of the Universe near and far. In this talk, he presented some key recent results from our on-going missions, including the Milky Way surveyor Gaia and the gravitational wave technology test bed LISA Pathfinder, and from two solar system explorers, Rosetta at Comet 67P/C-G and the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter at the Red Planet. He ended with a look forward to the exciting new missions coming from ESA and its partners in the next few years.
PARTICIPATION IN LECTURE SESSIONS
• “QUANTUM COMPUTATION” by Eminent Quantum Information Scientist,Prof.Barry C Sanders.
