LANDING FEDERAL Hoke's Division held its position at Sugar Loaf while A. H. Terry's Federal infantry marched down the peninsula. Terry's men erected a strong defensive line across Federal Point from Battery Anderson to the Cape Fear River. Bragg ordered a tentative advance on Terry's force to the south, but soon reached the conclusion that Hoke lacked sufficient force to take the position. Hoke retreated to Sugar Loaf. Terry was now confident that his northern line would sufficiently protect the Federal columns of Ames' division as they attacked Fort Fisher.
