• I have always hated country music, growing up my sisters blared it as loud as there cassette players would go. I think that’s the root of my hatred, but this isn’t therapy so I will get right to it. You can imagine my excitement when I started my career as an electrician and my trainer loved country music. Here is the guy I get to spend 10 hours a day with for the next year or so, while being accompanied by country music of course. Well the first month was rough, but a few songs started sounding good and I didn’t mind as much. Six months into this country style “waterboarding” was starting to break me down. I can say today I have 3 of my truck radio presets to country. One of the main reasons I went from hating country to craving it nightly had a great deal to do with Mr. Brad Paisley. His songs have always fascinated me. Whether he is telling a story about his life, or just a funny story about nothing. His songs have always got a catchy beat that make you want to sing along.

• Brads journey through country music started a long time before converting me to his songs. He was born on October 28, 1972 in West Virginia. After receiving a guitar and some lessons, at age eight both from his grandpa. He was on his way two years later at age ten he performed for the first time in public at church. From then on he was asked to play in all the Christmas and Mothers day events. At age twelve he wrote his first song “Born on Christmas Day”. He had been taking lessons with Clarence Goddard, also known as “Hank, and at age thirteen the two of them started a band. The band name was “Brad Paisley and the C-notes.” later on in junior high he was asked to perform at the rotary club meeting. In attendance was a radio station programmer by the name of Tom Miller. Miller later asked him if he would like to be a guest on Jamboree USA. This was his first performance of his next eight years on the show, after hearing him they asked him to join the weekly line up. He opened up for many known acts like The Judds, George Jones and Ricky Skaggs. Eventually he would be the youngest performer to be inducted into the Jamboree USA hall of fame.

• After Brad graduated High school he studied for two years at West Liberty University. After receiving a full ride scholarship to Belmont University he graduated with a Bachelors degree in music business. Along the way he met Frank Rogers a fellow class mate that would later be his producer. He also met Kelly Lovelace, and Chris DuBois who both became songwriting partners with him. Within a week of graduation Paisley signed a song writing contract with EMI Music Publishing. He wrote some hits for David Kersh including “Another You”, and “watching my baby not come back.”

• As I started this assignment of fifteen minutes of music of my composer, fifteen minutes turned into an hour and a half. That’s just to pick the fifteen minutes that are my favorite, so here it is enjoy.

• First up is “Welcome to the future” in Brad’s words it is a “song that is my hopes and dreams, captured in three generations.” It has his grandfather’s generation talking of writing to his grandma while he was serving in World War II at his base in the Philippines. Thinking this is the end of the world and now his grandsons business does work with the Japanese on a daily basis through video chat. The following verse covers his generation. Singing about how his dad would have to take him down to Kroger so he could play Pac-man video game. He thought how cool it would be if he could play it in the car on a trip, then reflected that now he has it on his phone and can play it anywhere. Third verse covers his children’s generation. Where he thinks about explaining to his kids that we had a black president, and they won’t think anything is unusual about it. Just an ordinary day, because they don’t remember the days when there was segregation.

• • The song “letter to me” comes from his album “5th Gear” released

October 22, 2007. The song spent four weeks as number one on the country billboards song chart. This song got its start from Paisleys wife. She was asked to write a book called “What I know now Letters to Me. “After hearing of this Brad thought that this would make a good country song. It only took Brad a good part of the week, only because he kept changing the lyrics. In the song the singer is the narrator who is an adult reflecting on his youth. Older and wiser as age always gives us he states if he could write a letter to himself here is what he would say. Not to worry about breaking up with that girl, because the wife you marry is much better, and to always know that dad was always right, and that you should thank your teacher for getting you through algebra. Over all the impression that I got is that don’t put so much emphasis on the small stuff because it all works out and you grow to be the man you are because of what you went through.

• • So to wrap up, I learned you can never

judge a book by its cover. Or in this case a C.D. by its case. I have found that I really enjoy country music and especially Mr. Brad Paisley. I am excited to buy all his new albums, To hear his new stories set to music, And to reflect on my life as he sings about reflecting on his.

• The song “Ticks” just has to make you laugh. When Paisley was asked what this was about, he smiled and replies. Well working out here on the farm, I would have to check for ticks every time I come in from the woods or the fields. Now if I guy used that as a pick up line how cleaver is that. So the song starts out in a bar and guys are trying to pick up on the girls. Paisley is more of a gentleman and offers to check her for ticks. It just makes me smile all the funny things he says about the ways to check. With its catchy beat and funny lyrics it is many people’s top ten of his songs. It spent some time on country’s Billboards top lists. It can even be downloaded for the video game Guitar Hero.

• “Online” was released on July 2, 2007. Any one that heard it was entertained but to follow it up with watching the music video they would be entertained and left satisfied. The song talked about a guy that is average looking, lives with his parents overall a bit of a loser. But when he logs on to his “My Space” account he can be whoever he wants. Rich and successful, good looking he can now chat up the ladies. The reason that the video is even better, Jason Alexander plays the loser. While Brad paisley plays the “online guy.” With the help of William Shatner who plays his father. They play out the roles of the song. He can live in Malibu, drive a Maserati, be a black belt in karate all online, but he is actually a pizza delivery man that plays in the marching band that loves sci-fi. So for a good time listen to these fifteen minutes of Brad Paisley, and you will be left reflecting on life and laughing as you do.
