Next to buying a house, one of the biggest investments you can make is a remodel of that house. In addition to making your home
as comfortable, functional and stylish as possible, a remodel can make your home more valuable...or not, if it’s not done right.
The decisions you make for your remodel can have pretty big consequences. So, you want to make sure you choose wisely. Granite countertops, state-of-the-art appliances, sleek plumbing and lighting fixtures, high quality cabinetry. These are all some pretty good choices.
But apart from the materials and fixtures, the one thing that you really need to consider carefully is the person with whom you entrust the work. After all, it will take great craftsmanship to match your exquisite taste, and great skill to install everything in a coordinated and timely manner. And then there are all the technical details. Do the desired materials and layout of the space meet your actual needs? Are they safe? Does everything meet building codes?
There are so many things to consider about a remodel--the seen as well as the unseen--that it would seem to require a seemingly endless well of knowledge. That’s exactly where the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) comes in.
NARI is an organization dedicated to creating and enforcing the highest of standards for those in the remodeling industry. Members must meet such standards on a continual basis, and adhere to strict codes of ethics and professionalism. And in order to stay certified, members must also participate in ongoing education on design trends, advancements in technology and building techniques, state and national building codes, and much more.
For homeowners shopping around for the right person for their remodel, NARI makes it infinitely easier to narrow down the choices and guarantee piece of mind before, during and after a remodel. You can rest assured knowing that a remodeling professional who is NARI certified means that they have and continue to meet standards that are as high or even higher than your own. These are professionals who are reliable, educated and respectful of their clients’ wishes. Put in the simplest terms, NARI certified professionals know what they’re doing.
This guide was created to keep consumers informed, as well as to help them decide on the right local NARI professional for them. Homeowners can also go to www.nari.org and do the same thing with an easy-to-use online search form. Plus, there are all kinds of educational resources online to help you navigate any and all questions about NARI, the remodeling process, design options and more.
You’ve already made lots of smart decisions about your remodel. You only need to make one more to bring those decisions to life. For everything a successful remodel requires, certified NARI professionals have the tools and education needed to get them done. As decisions go, it’s a no-brainer.

On the other hand, if your home is in a great school district and you are friends with your neighbors, the idea of moving probably becomes less appealing. Those are things that can be difficult to replicate in a new home. Should this be the case, you’ll want to find a designer or contrac-tor that can help you determine if you can make your current home the way you want it in the neighborhood you already love.
Level of Attachment You bought your home when you were just newlyweds. You’ve raised kids there, had numerous family gatherings and many years of great memories there. It can be hard to just walk away from all that.
Everyone is different and so will weigh each of these factors differently. Some of these things are pragmatic, while others are rooted in emotion and sentiment. It’s up to you to decide what’s most important to you on the way to having the home of your dreams.
Whatever you decide, you can rest assured that there is a group of professionals that can help you make these difficult decisions. Sacramento’s NARI Chapter has over a hundred members specializing in different aspects of the remodeling industry. They have been screened, have attended continuing education and certified training, and are considered the top experts in their profession.
In addition to helping you to get the most bang for your remodeling buck, NARI members’ level of expertise also ensures that the remodel process goes as smoothly as possible, with results that will help you love living in whatever home you choose.
T elements you need in a neighborhood you like? It’s not uncommon for new home buyers to make changes immediately after they purchase. If the new home had a bigger master bedroom, modern gourmet kitchen, open floor plan, or an elegant master bath, it could be your dream home. But can you afford to make these changes after the expense of purchasing a new home?
Scale of ProjectIt’s one thing if you want to upgrade your kitchen cabinets and appli-ances, it’s another if you need to add another floor or move your entire kitchen. You have to decide if the upgrades will be worth the turmoil you and your family will have to go through.
You need to figure out if the scale of the changes you need makes sense or should you try and find the things you need already available in a different house. Or maybe a different house may require a less invasive remodel to accomplish your perfect home.
LocationIf you aren’t happy with the state of your neighborhood, that’s not something that a remodel can fix. In that case, moving is pretty much your only option. If you find a not-so-great place in a great neighbor-hood, keep in mind that it is possible to make changes so that your new home is ultimately exactly what you want. Just be sure to consult a reliable professional before you lock in your dreams and find out it’s not financially or architecturally feasible.
This is a question that many homeowners ask themselves at one time or another. The house that they loved when they first bought it now feels too small or out of date. It just doesn’t function well for the way they live now. You may love your neighbors, community, and loca-tion, but the home is just outdated.
Or you are ready to move to a new neighborhood but can’t find a house that meets your needs as well as your existing house. But looking for and buying a new home—and then the whole moving process—can be such a pain.
It is so common and compelling a dilemma that popular home improvement TV shows based on that premise have been on the air for years. If you’ve started to feel this way about your home, you really only have two options to remedy the situation: fix the problem or move. There are a number of factors that you need to consider when trying to decide which way you should go.
BudgetMost any problem you may have with your home is fixable…as long as money is no object. That is not often the case, of course. So, you need to determine if you can afford the changes that you desire, or at least afford to change the things that are really important to you.
You also have to ask yourself the same question when it comes to getting a new place. Can you afford the space, functionality and design
