Madeline is an extremely popular book series across the globe, and has been translated into a number of different languages. It was written by American author and artist Ludwig Bemelmans in 1939. The original books are set in Paris and are a wonderful introduction to the French culture.

Madeline - the beginnings The adventures of the little Madeline were based on Ludwig Bemelmans’ own life.

Madeline’s character was inspired by the writer’s daughter Barbara, however, she gets her name from the author’s wife. It is worth pointing out that Madeline’s life story was loosely based on his mother’s childhood memories.

It took the birth of the author’s only child, Barbara, and a family trip to France, for the book to be written. In 1938, the Bemelmans’ travelled to the southern part of the country. Whilst sightseeing the author had to be taken to hospital because of a bike crash.

In an adjoining room there was a girl who was recovering from appendicitis. This should sound familiar, especially that Madeline in the very first book is taken to hospital

because she is suffering from… yes, you’ve guessed it! She’s suffering from appendicitis!

Madeline, the smallest of all the pupils attending Miss Clavel’s school, is a very courageous little girl, she is honest and always ready to help others.

She has many amazing adventures.

Her friends include Pepito, the son of the Spanish ambassador who lives next door; Lord Cucuface, owner of the house, and Genevieve, a dog who

rescues Madeline from drowning.

DID YOU KNOW? Although Ludwig Bemelmans died in 1962, Madeline still continues her adventures ‘lining up in one of two straight lines, leaving the house at half past nine’.

The writer’s grandson, John Bemelmans-Marciano, has carried on the legacy of his famous grandfather. His titles include Madeline in the White House, Madeline in Texas and Madeline and the Cats of Rome. Currently there are sixteen Madeline books available. They were later made into a TV series and a film.
