DR. ALAN SCHAFFERT Sunday, March 11 Time: ABOUT ALAN SCHAFFERT Alan Schaffert is a local physician and an amateur paleontologist with a passion for marine fossils. He found his first fossil by accident at age thirteen when he and his brothers were throwing rocks on a stone beach in Northern Michigan. One rock shattered as it landed and out popped a perfect brachiopod. It was awesome and he was hooked. Many more rocks were enthusiastically cracked that afternoon, alas, they were all duds. Far from being disappointed, this object lesson only served to whet his appetite for collecting more fossils.
Over the next 40 years, Alan and his wife Cris have personally collected specimens from Michigan, Colorado, Utah, and California. He has also purchased numerous marine fossils from around the world. A major focus of the collection is Cretaceous ammonites. They were a group of ancient shellfish related to the modern octopus and squid. The shells of the ammonites were often simple. Sometimes the shells were elaborate or rarely quite bizarre.
Alan and Cris are very pleased to share specimens from the collection. They hope that the public will enjoy learning about them as much as they do.
Our Club History The Mother Lode Mineral Society is a non-profit organization formed for the purpose of promoting an appreciation of the Earth Sciences. MLMS was founded in 1936 by a group of Modesto Junior College Geology students headed by Instructor Dr. Will Brown. They began with field trips into the Mother Lode Country, hence the name of our organization. The club eventually expanded to include lapidary, faceting and jewelry classes at MJC and Stanislaus State campuses. MLMS is affiliated with the California Federation of Mineralogical Societies, having received our charter in 1936. We still go on rock hunting field trips, sometimes with our Co-Op clubs or on California Federation sponsored trips. Our Annual Gem Show, Showtime, is the principal source of support and requires the time and talents of all our members. We feature a demonstration room where you might find an interest in an exciting new hobby. You too, might be creating lovely things from some of Mother Nature's treasures!

Fluorescent Display Come See Our New Fluorescent Display!
We are in the building #2 this year in a large Black tent. See the fabulous fluorescent colors that ultraviolet lamps bring out of plain old drab looking rocks, WILD!!!
Treasure Hunt This is a fun activity for children of all ages to find several items located through out the display cases. It is designed to educate and expose children to the wonders of rocks, minerals and fossils. Take time to search with your children for each item and talk with them about what they see. If you have any questions, please ask one of our members. We love to share our knowledge and hope that you enjoy what you see!
Touch & See A favorite display for all ages! Here is an area where you may touch the items on the table to examine and ask questions. We have mineral specimens, fossils, artifacts and field collected rocks which can be shaped and polished. The displays are labeled. The items on display are provide by loan and gifts from club members.
Silent Auction A great selection of rocks and minerals are offered for your bidding. These are field trip specials chosen with care to share with our visitors. We also feature a Junior section where bidding is reserved for those 12 years or younger.
Questions? Many wonders of earth science abound throughout our show. Take time as you walk through the exhibit cases and demonstrations and experience the beauty of nature found all around us. If you have questions, please ask any of our many MLMS members at the
show, we love to share our knowledge.
