br worksheet
DESCRIPTION
An analysis of the consonant blend "br" in the English language, and what meanings the sound "br" imparts. The concept of "branching" is prevalent in words that begin with "br." The first time something branches, it is typically a division that yields two. From there on, the branches get more complex, and become breeds, brothers, even brushes—language is based upon metaphor. George Lakoff pointed this out in the '80s. The color of a branch is brown, and the tangential nature of this shows how language branches. "Brunette," brick-colored," "brassy," "brownies," even "brow" all share the sound/meaning combination related to "br."TRANSCRIPT

Language operates on metaphor: the actual branch/bush turns into practi-cal broom/brush, which then turns into the concep-tual braiding and breeding. A “bride” is defined by her breeding role (which bridges two families).
Words beginning with “br”
Branching im-plies one com-posed of many, and that’s the relationship between a brick and a brick wall, a slice of bread and a loaf, and wedge of brie and a wheel. There’s also the con-straining aspect of branches, which serve as a restriction, for example: brace, bracelet, bridle.
