Dear Friends and Supporters of BPD,

The past year has been full of growth, opportunities, and — most importantly — results that exceeded ourexpectations. In 2012, BPD embarked upon a new

journey with our Mayan community partners, centering ourprogramming on one fundamental goal: reducing chronicchildhood malnutrition. We strengthened our focus ongrassroots development, providing community memberswith the tools they need to organizeand address problems themselves. Two years later, our new strategy isbearing fruit: we are achievinggreater reductions in childhoodmalnutrition rates than ever before.

In this Annual Report, we are proudto highlight our impressive quantita-tive results. We have also endeav-ored to share some of the qualitativeresults — the transformations thattake place when individuals andcommunities are empowered toshape their own futures. As support-ers of this work, we feel it is impor-

tant you get to see these stories as well. For example, we wantyou to know that your donations have enabled us to reducechronic malnutrition among children under five years from52 percent to 28 percent in one partner community; we alsowant to tell you how your contributions helped youth in thatsame village come together to develop and implement theirown community improvement projects, ensuring that theyhave a foundation on which to build when they are adults, parents and community leaders.

In 2017, we will celebrate our 50th anniversary of partneringwith indigenous Mayan communities to create lasting solu-tions to the persistent problems of poverty and inequality inrural Guatemala. As a mature organization, we are constantlyevaluating every aspect of our work in order to improve andadapt to the evolving needs of our partner communities. Inthat vein, we are excited to make an important announce-ment: starting in January, we will change our name fromBPD to ALDEA, a Spanish word which means “village.” Thename ALDEA expresses the heart of our work: AdvancingLocal Development through Empowerment and Action inour partner communities. As always, our work continues tobe based upon the principles of our founder, Dr. Carroll

Behrhorst. Stay tuned for a more de-tailed announcement!

I hope you enjoy learning moreabout our recent achievements. Be-cause of your commitment to BPD,the stories of growth and changefrom our partner communities areyour stories, too.

Best regards,

Patricia O’ConnorBPD Board President

Dear Friends of BPD:

Our fiscal year has ended, and Iam excited to share our accom-plishments with you! We have had12 very successful months in Chi-maltenango, thanks to our hard-working staff and to you, oursupporters.

This has been a period of chal-lenges and joys, dreams that havebeen realized after many years ofstruggle and sacrifice, and positivechanges for the 900 families in thesix communities in which weworked.

When we started work in these sixcommunities in June 2013, malnu-trition rates were as high as 67

percent, well above the nationalaverage of 48 percent. They havenow been reduced by up to 24 per-centage points! Wework in thehardest hit areas of the country. But we also work with people whowant to do what it takes to im-prove their lives and their chil-dren’s lives.

Our successful strategies have ledto a significant, positive impact onthe nutritional status of childrenunder five, and demonstrated thatchronic childhoodmalnutritionshould be addressed using a ho-listic approach.

Doña Carmela Pérez from thepartner community of Saquiyáattested, “My life has completely

We implemented our full program in Saquiyá,Xepatán, Chuacacay and Chucahun. In Los Encuentritos and Sacalá Las Lomas, we builtnew water systems.

We reduced the chronic malnutrition rate for children under five by as much as 24 percent-age points in the villages we supported.

100% of mothers are practicing exclusivebreastfeeding with children under six monthsof age and proper weaning techniques forchildren over 6 months.

100% of the families with whom we work use and properly maintain their latrines, graywater filters, and stoves.

40% of participating families planted vegeta-bles and fruits in their new home gardens. After initial inputs and technical assistance, these families are now caring for the gardenson their own.

After three years, 700 families are raising milk-producing goats.

Two hundred and sixty couples are using fam-ily planning methods and deciding how many children to have.

Nine percent of the women who work withBPD are active members of a decision-makingcommittee or community structure.

Youth take part in community decisions aswell and, in some cases, have led their own development projects.

changed in one year. From dedicating the majority of my dayto bringing water and firewood to the house, I now have timefor me and my family. My children are healthier, we are eatingbetter, and I am now a member of one of the community com-mittees and my concerns and ideas are listened to. We haveworked hard for this, but it has been worth it.”

Doña Carmela and other empowered women have beentrained as promoters. As our daily presence in these commu-nities comes to an end, these women have emerged as theleaders who will carry their communities forward.

We hope we can count on your continued support to bringthese changes and improvements to many more new commu-nities, and to be able to share more stories like Doña Carmela’s.Thank you, friends, donors, and partners, for trusting inBPD, and for the love that you show to the Mayan people ofChimaltenango.

Hasta pronto,

Guatemalan Families Association, located in theUnited Kingdom, is comprised of families who haveadopted children from Guatemala. They have been

proud supporters of BPD since 2002, with total donationsexceeding $200,000. Last year, GFA helped to fund a watersystem in Los Encuentritos. The Sievers family visited thisvillage in June 2014 to see the results.

“I still shake my head at the extraordinary achievement thatnow 107 families [in Los Encuentritos] receive filtered runningwater direct to their homes, whilst 18 months or so ago, theywould have had to walk to the springs and carry their waterback… It is clear that the work of BPD so significantly makes adifference to some of the poorest communities in Guatemala, and I was also impressed with the continuity after the projectthat BPD provides.” — Graham Sievers

A vision is not just a picture of what could be,it is an appeal to our better selves,a call to become something more.

In 2012, with both BPD’s history and future in mind, theDr. Carroll Behrhorst Legacy Society was formed tohonor those who partner in our work with indigenous

communities in rural Guatemala through a gift in their willsor estate plans.

We are grateful to these friends who, through thoughtfulplanning, are leading the way by supporting Behrhorst Part-ners for Development beyond their lifetimes. On behalf ofthe future generations who will benefit, we thank you.
