TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

In my childhood, I watched my father achieve three Master’s Degrees (in addition to the Bachelor’s Degrees both my parents earned from the University of Tennessee). Both my sister and I were expected to attend college and obtain formal degrees. While my undergraduate degree was a stop and re-start process, I eventually attained the degree in my ‘passion’ – a Bachelor of Fine Art (Graphic Advertising and Illustration). I quickly realized the term ‘starving artist’ wasn’t just a cliché. After starting my own business to pay the bills, I returned to academia at Virginia Commonwealth University to earn my Master’s Degree. (One of my professors, Dr. Rosemary Cafferella, not only wrote a definitive textbook about Adult Education [androgy], but also interned with Malcolm Knowles, the father of Adult Education.) My hope was to move away from physical labor and into a knowledge-based career path. I have always been a curious creature devoted to lifetime learning. I am like a vacuum cleaner – sucking up knowledge for my business, my education, and in my life’s purpose of achieving something memorable. In all my career jobs, my first questions after being hired were: what training can I take and what education will be reimbursed? In the last 10 years I have completed over 450 online courses as well as my Ph.D. in Education.

When I taught in higher education, my goal was to make the course purposeful. I wanted the students to not just mimic what I taught, but to understand how and why to write professionally, to mind-map essay papers, to use citations, to learn faster, easier, cheaper ways to research. I wanted them to identify valid Internet (deep web) sites for reliable content, and to apply their learning objectives from the class to the real world. I don’t believe in teaching boring abstract theories, but illustrating those theories with examples, anecdotes, and real-life scenarios with successful working models (modern resumes), applications to real-world situations (MS Word mail merges, Excel database spreadsheets), and show them (not tell them) how something works. This allows my students to use the applications in their future jobs or to advance in school with a better educational grounding. When I started to teach as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, I was stunned my undergrad students didn’t use as much social media or different platforms than I expected. I was flabbergasted a majority of students in my classes had never opened a spreadsheet program. I was worried these students didn’t have the tools, knowledge, or concepts they could use to reduce workload and increase capabilities for future career paths. In my own Ph.D. program, I listened to professors who had been in the academic world for so long they had lost touch with the real world of business, commerce, and technology. They refused to use modern technology (e.g., Blackboard) to reduce their work burden, or were unable to use modern technology to teach their student’s or about technology itself. My goal when I teach is to spread the awareness, and the practice, of technology to not only my students, but also my peers and co-workers so they can achieve more in less time.

Essentially my philosophy is to ask, “What is the most powerful knowledge, skills, and abilities I can provide my students to build upon their career profession and educational track? I use the answer to build the best curriculum, or to teach the best content. I want my students to come back later and say, “I used what you taught me!” This is best practice teaching!
