Boyd's Map of the Pines HD Updated 1/8/2018

This new update to the original Map of the Pines (first released in 2008) covers a larger area and has extreme detail in the New Jersey Pinelands. And it's compatible with Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, iOS, handheld GPS units and more via the free open source Mobile Atlas Creator program. This document covers installation and use of the map. The accompanying file tutorial.pdf will get you up and running quickly with Mobile Atlas Creator.

For maximum readability, separate maps are displayed for each level as you zoom in and out.

An "X" mark in the zoom level column indicates that the listed feature will appear. Fewer POI and fewer labels are shown at lower zoom levels to reduce map clutter.

Elevation contours were created from high resolution 1/9 arc second LIDAR DEM data in New Jersey and 1/3 arc second DEM data in Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania as follows: Level 17: 2 foot intervals Level 16: 5 foot intervals Level 15: 5 foot intervals Level 14: 10 foot intervals Level 13: 20 foot intervals

For more information about the NGS benchmarks on the map, use the National Geodetic Survey Data Explorer at: https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/NGSDataExplorer/ Click the PID link on the left side of the page, enter the number from the map and click the Go To PID button.

Map Installation Before installing the map, please read the license agreement at the end of this document. Although the map is free, it is copyrighted and you must agree to all of its terms of use. This map requires Mobile Atlas Creator (MOBAC) on your computer. If you have not yet installed MOBAC, you must install it before proceeding. The included file tutorial.pdf explains the installation process in detail. The following screenshots were taken on a Windows 7 computer but the procedure is the same on the Macintosh.

After installing MOBAC you may proceed with map installation, which is very simple and only involves moving two files. Move the file named boydmapHD.mbtiles to the folder that contains the Mobile Atlas Creator program.

Now move the file named boydmapHD.xml to the mapsources folder, which is found inside the Mobile Atlas Creator folder.

Start Mobile Atlas Creator and you should be able to choose Boyd's Map of the Pines HD from the Mapsource list. See the tutorial.pdf file that is included in this distribution for help with Mobile Atlas Creator.

Usage notesThe entire map supports zoom levels 11 through 16, however the HD portion of the map allows you to zoom to level 17 for extreme detail. The HD coverage area is based on the boundaries of USGS 24k topographic map quadrangles.

If you're outside of the HD coverage area and zoom to level 17, you'll see red X marks on the screen. This means there's no HD map for that area. Zoom back out to level 16 and you'll see the full map again. In the example below, the red X marks indicate there is no HD coverage for the area on the left.

For comprehensive Mobile Atlas Creator help, please see the tutorial.pdf file. It includes step-by-step instructions for installing the map on smartphones, handheld GPS units and computers.
