After breakfast Saturday morning we’ll be doing some service projects for camp. Following lunch there will be the Highland Games. WORDS FROM THE CHIEF
Hello brothers, I'd like to thank all of you
that came to our annual winter banquet.
Seeing all of my fellow Arrowmen coming
together in one place was really special for
me. For those of you who we're not able to
attend we had a hypnotist, great food, a
silent auction, and great fellowship. I
recommend to all of you who have not
attended thus far to go in 2017! Thank you all
for taking the time to read this newsletter and
I look forward to seeing you all at our spring
fellowship.
Yours in Service,
Noah Harvey

Hello Arrowmen!
I hope to see you all at the Spring Fellowship, and I hope that you all are in good
spirits! Our last LEC was postponed due to weather. The next event coming up is
going to be big! Spring Fellowship, the summer camp and of course - the biggie
this year - CONCLAVE. Since we are hosting this year, I hope to see all your bright,
shining, happy faces out there at Ingawanis. A vital part of our planning for a suc-
cessful conclave will be the Onsite COC in April. Please try to attend and help the
lodge plan our Section Event. I hope to see you there, and stay classy, servicemen!
Yours in Service,
Isaac Byrne
Dear Fellow Arrowmen,
The election season has begun. Please inform your Scoutmasters to schedule
election dates so we can grow our brotherhood. Have your Scoutmasters contact
their corresponding Chapter Chiefs and from there, we will work together to
schedule your unit’s elections. Even if there are no Scouts who are eligible in your
unit, it will be helpful for your Chapter Chief and myself to be aware of all the
troops in our Lodge, and their need status of elections. I thank you and hope to see
you all at Spring Fellowship! Please ask if you have any questions or concerns
about the election process.
Yours in Brotherhood,
Samuel Wright
Vice Chief of Ceremonies
As Spring fellowship is right around the corner, I am working on putting together
a ceremonies team. If you have any interest in participating in any of the
ceremonies, including Callout, Pre-Ordeal, or Inductions, or have any questions,
please contact me. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Luke Lawson

Hello fellow Arrowmen,
Kristian here and I wanted to say that if you did not get the chance to attend the
winter banquet you missed put on a good time. We had a hypnotist who
mesmerized our very own lodge chief Noah and others, including our special
guests. We honored our Vigils, new LEC members; presented the Centurion
Awards, the James E. West, and Founders’ Awards. If you missed winter banquet,
you can still come to Spring Fellowship. It is going to be happening April 22nd-
24th. We will be having lots of fun there and get a little service done for the camp.
Hope to see you all there for our Highland Games Fellowship!
Yours in brotherhood,
Kristian Ferneau

Recipients of the Vigil Honor award for
2015 were Alex & Craig Bussan pictured
left to right at the Winter Banquet.
The Vigil Honor is a high mark of
distinction and recognition reserved for
those Arrowmen who, by reason of
exceptional service, personal effort, and
unself ish interest, have made
contributions beyond the immediate
responsibilities to one or more of the
following: their lodge, the Order of the
Arrow, Scouting or their Scout camp.
Under no circumstances is tenure in
Scouting or the Order of the Arrow
considered as reason enough for a Vigil
Honor recommendation The following
procedure has been established by the
national Order of the Arrow committee to
maintain a consistent, high standard in the
selection of Vigil Honor nominees across
the nation.
The lodge chief appoints a Vigil Honor
nominating committee chairman and
committee members composed of youths who have been approved by the lodge
adviser and Scout executive. The lodge adviser appoints one adult adviser in
consultation with the lodge chief and staff adviser. The chairman and committee
members are usually Vigil Honor members; however, any youth member of the
lodge may serve on the committee, provided that has been a Brotherhood member
for less than 2 years. A committee of at least five youths are selected by the Vigil
Chief. The committee members will collectively be aware which Arrowmen have
been the leaders and workers in their lodge. The committee meets and all
discussions are strictly held in privacy. The Arrowmen nominated must receive the
approval of the lodge chief, Lay Adviser, and Scout Executive.

Sound Familiar? | Lodge History
Have you ever wondered why there’s always the same name that starts the roll
call at Gathering and Spreading of the Ashes ceremonies? Here’s a little lodge his-
tory for you! Allin Dakin in Mason City, Iowa. He attended Mason City High School.
He was the first Eagle Scout from the old Winnebago Council and was one of the
first in the state of Iowa. He served several years on the camp staff at Roosevelt.
While serving there he was instrumental in the founding of the ‘Old Guard’
organization. That group of honor campers eventually became the Aiaouez Lodge
of the Order of the Arrow which merged with the Wakosha to become the Sac-n-fox
in 1972. He earned a M.B.A. from Harvard University's and 1961 he was awarded a
doctorate from Westmar College. From 1944 to 1953, Dakin was an administrative
dean and the assistant to the President of the University of Iowa. He was an admin-
istrative dean, working with finances, from 1953 until his retirement from the Uni-
versity of Iowa.
As a Scout leader, Mr. Dakin played a significant role in the difficult, but success-
ful merger of the Iowa River Valley Council and the Waubeek Area Council that was
completed in 1952 forming the Hawkeye Area Council, BSA. He is a recipient of
both the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope Awards which are the highest awards
given to Council and Regional volunteers. The main Dining Hall at Howard Cherry
Scout Camp is named in his honor. For his many contributions to the organization
and in recognition of a lifetime of achievements, the national Court of Honor of the
Boy Scouts of America awarded Allin with the prestigious Distinguished Eagle
Award in 1988.
At the age of 87, Mr. Dakin died in Coralville, Iowa, on September 17, 1992. He
was awarded the Centurion Recognition from out lodge in 1915.
Hello this is Charlie Snyder, Elangomat chair. I want to see you helping by being
an Elengomat on July 6 and July 29. As there will probably be a lot of Ordeals each
of those weekends, we’ll be needing a number of Elangomats. There is no cost to
be an Elengomat and you will receive a T-Shirt and an Elangomat patch for your
service. Please let me know if you can serve either or both of those weekends.
Sincerely,
Charlie Snyder

Every year, our lodge recognizes members with distinctions such as the Found-
er’s Award and the Vigil Honor. However, in 2015, lodges were given the oppor-
tunity to present an award that will only be bestowed once. The Order of the Ar-
row’s centennial provides a unique opportunity to commemorate those among us
who are exemplars of the “high ideals and purpose of the Order of the Arrow.”
The Centurion Award aims to highlight “Hometown Heroes,” or Arrowmen who
have meaningfully contributed to the forming, maturing and ongoing operational
excellence of their local council’s lodge. It is modeled after a similar program in
the BSA’s 100th anniversary celebration, the 2010 National Hall of Leadership.
Accordingly, this recognition is an opportunity to highlight lodge development
over the last century and the many individuals, both youth and adult, who were in-
strumental to this success. These honorees will serve as exemplars of leadership,
modeling to others a commitment to cheerful service as the Order of the Arrow

Introduced at the 1981 National Order of the Arrow Conference, the
Founder's Award recognizes Arrowmen who have given outstanding
service to their lodge. The award is reserved for an Arrowman who
demonstrates that he or she personifies the spirit of selfless service, as
advocated by founder E. Urner Goodman and cofounder Carroll A.
Edson.
The award is a handsome bronze medallion bearing the likenesses of
E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson, with a wooden base and a
brass plate suitable for engraving
This year’s recipients were Chadd Blanchard for the youth and Ed
Depape for the adult awards. To their left is Marc Curran with his “James
E. West” award.

Requirements for Vigil Honor
Alertness to the needs of others is the mark of the Vigil Honor. It calls for an individual with an unusu-al awareness of the possibilities within each situation.
The Vigil Honor is the highest honor that the Order of the Arrow can bestow upon its members for ser-vice to the lodge, council, and Scouting. Membership cannot be won by a person’s conscious endeavors.
The Vigil Honor is a high mark of distinction and recognition reserved for those Arrowmen who, by reason of exceptional service, personal effort, and unselfish interest have made distinguished contributions beyond the immediate responsibilities of their position of office to one or more of the following:
Lodge Order of the Arrow Scouting community Scout Camp
Under NO circumstances should tenure in Scouting or the Order of the Arrow be considered as reasons enough for a Vigil Honor recommendation.
Any member of the Order of the Arrow registered in Scouting and in good standing in a regularly char-tered lodge is eligible for recommendation to the Na-tional Order of the Arrow Committee for evaluation to the Vigil Honor provided that, at the same time of the recommendation, the individual has been a Brotherhood member for a minimum of two years.
If you know of an Order of the Arrow member you believe possesses these qualities, please fill out the following nomination form on their behalf. 2016 Ceremonies Process
Scouts who are elected by their home units to become members of the Sac-N-Fox Lodge,
Order of the Arrow may participate in the Call-Out of the camp that their unit attends. All
Scouts Called-Out must complete their Ordeal at Ingawanis at one of the three Ordeal
sessions. If they are attending Howard H. Cherry with their unit this summer, they will
be Called-Out by Cho-Gun-Mun-A-Nock Lodge and their Ordeal will be held at Ingawanis
on either July 22nd or July 27. If they are unable to complete their Ordeal during one of
our two summer sessions, they can wait until Fall Fellowship and complete their Ordeal
then.
If Scouts are to be Called-Out at any camp other than Howard H. Cherry Scout Reserva-
tion, their unit leadership MUST have secured a letter of permission form the Lodge Chief
and Lodge Adviser prior to leaving for their week of summer camp. They will need to pre-
sent the letter to the camp they will be attending when they check-in. They will then need
to attend one of the three Ordeal sessions that will be held at Ingawanis Adventure Base.
Scouts that are not attending a Boy Scout resident this summer, but have been elected to
the Order of the Arrow by their unit may also attend any of the above dates. If your unit is
not planning to attend a summer camp, the scouts will still need to be called out. Scouts
can be called out any week of Boy Scout Resident Camp at Howard H. Cherry Scout reser-
vation even if they are not camping that week. They can also be called out on July 22nd or
July 27th. A Callout ceremony will not be conducted at Fall Fellowship.
All candidates are to present themselves at the Director’s Lodge at Ingawanis no later
than 7pm on Friday, July 22, 2016 or Wednesday, July 27, 2016. When they arrive at the Di-
rectors Lodge they will be required to turn in a complete BSA Health Form. The complete
BSA health form includes parts A, B, and C. They will complete their Ordeal by 5pm on
Saturday July 23, 2016 or Thursday July 28, 2016. If they are driving by themselves, they
may NOT leave camp until Sunday, July 24, 2016 or Friday, July 29, 2016. Those who opt
for the Fall Fellowship session will receive directions after the second summer session.
If you have questions about the above information, please send an email to:
[email protected]. The above information, and other event details,
will be sent to each unit after the conclusion of our 2016 election session.
