our companyIn the simplest terms, we are an american bicycle distribution company focusing on bringing the finest scandinavian utility cycles to the states.

But, fortunately for us, it’s not that simple or boring. There’s a whole lifestyle behind these types of bikes, and we are here to improt that as well. And though cities like copenhagen are years ahead of us in terms of allowing such a lifestyle to flourish, we americans can dream, too.And as the dream slowly begins to take shape, we’ve got the bikes for the long ride ahead…

Nearly 30 years later, and still under the same ownership in denmark, the bikes are an inter-national icon. Become a part of the tradition.

Our bikes

Our christiania bikes have built their reputa-tion on classic design and uncompromised quality.

For nearly 30 years these bikes have been ridden year-round n the harsh Scandinavian climate. So whether you plan to ride in South florida during the rainy season or in NYC in a nor’easter, we’ve got you covered.

We use only the heighest quality materials, finishes, and components, so besides having

the best looking bike on the block, you can trust it will also ride like a dream.

Winner and the classics prize 2010/11

With the Danish Design Prize 2010/11, the Danish Design Centre celebrates some of the finest design in the market right now.The jury says : ”The Classics Prize 2010/11 goes to Christiania Bikes. It has been present in Danish streets and lanes for more than 25 years and has earned its well-deserved iconic status.

The design is simple and robust and has proven its durability through many years of daily transport of shopping bags and children.

The bicycle is a beautiful example of design that springs from a simple, good idea that stays viable due to function and charm. It has inspired other manufacturers’ and designers’ development and innovation efforts and can practically be seen as the ancestress of new generations of bicycles.

Christiania Bikes is still manufactured in Denmark, but it also makes an appearance in cities around Europe, where it helps to boost the tradition for cycling and to highlight a con-venient, green and innovative mode of trans-portation. There is, therefore, no doubt that Christiania Bikes has deserved the Classics Prize 2010/11.”

rich in historyQuotes by Danish Design Center

Christiania bikes were started out of pure utilitarian reasons. Lars Engstrøm built the first bike for his wife, Annie, because they lived in a car free section of Copenhagen – the world famous Christiania.

“If you want to die the richest man, then just stay sharp. Keep investing. Don’t spend any-thing. Don’t eat any of the capital. Don’t have a good time. Don’t get to know yourself. Don’t give anything away. Keep it all. Die as rich as you can. But you know what ? … There’s no pocket in that last shirt.” – Susie Tompkins Buell (from Let My People Go Surfing)

1 % for the Planet

We recently joined 1% for the Planet, whose mission is to ‘use market forces to drive posi-tive environmental change by inspiring com-

panies to give’. Basically, through 1% for the Planet, we donate 1 % of our total sales (not profits) to an approved environmental cause of our choice.

The organization is the brainchild of Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, who lik-ens the contributions – from the nearly 1250 members worldwide – as something of an Earth tax. In his book, Let My People Go Surf-ing – which is something between a business textbook, memoir, and manifesto – Chouinard explains the organization’s beginnings and mission a bit more in depth. The book is an

absolute must-read for anyone starting a busi-ness – I read it at least once a year just to kick myself in the ass.

Choosing a bike over a car is a step in the right direction when it comes to considering the environment, but there is still so much more that can be done. So considering this, we thought it would be a great to do more than just offer an alternative to gas-powered urban mobility.

our storyTrue story

In 2007 I moved to Copenhagen to start a family with my Danish wife

With only a few months to go before the birth of our son and without any job, I had the rare opportunity to learn a new way of life and to possibly steer my future in a new direction without any distractions.

Some might have found it stressful, I found it freeing. I spent this time learning a new city – much of it with the help of an old, trusty bike – and what I found was pretty inspiring.

The cycling culture was, and still is, my favorite part of living in Copen hagen. It’s so ingrained in the everyday lives of the danes that it is rarely even talked about – but for me, I couldn’t keep it off my mind. What if we had a cycling culture like this back home in the States ?

To realize that such a simple machine could make so many people’s lives so much more enjoyable, was a revelation that I couldn’t keep to myself and it ended up being the launching point for what you see here. And though cities like Copenhagen are years ahead of us in terms of allowing such a lifestyle to flourish, we Americans can dream, too.

And as the dream slowly begins to take shape, we’ve got the bikes for the long ride ahead…

sometimes it’s possible

to think inside and

outside the box

our mission It’s pretty simple. We want people to ride bikes instead of cars. If it works that you choose our bikes, all the better.

There’s a host of reasons why it’s the right thing to do, but is comes down to what you think is important. We think it’s important and that’s why we are in the business. In a world filled with fast-paced, hi-tech, and exploitative industry, we think it’s time to get back to basics with a good old-fashioned bike ride.
