1 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2005 V Finals are looming. The competition is hotting up. The silly part of the season is upon us. With just four games to go before finals (in A and B- sections) and three in the other sections, it is the time of the year where anything goes. Do not be surprised to see some crazy upsets in the next few rounds as teams from the lower rungs of the ladder come out swinging in order to avoid the dreaded drop. The VAFA is the biggest Australian Rules competition in the country and its relegation system adds intrigue to both ends of the ladder this time of the year. I’m certain other football leagues are envious of our relegation system and I’m sure the AFL is one of them. The AFL has been dogged by the problem that the bottom teams have nothing to play for at the end of the season and are better off losing to gain better picks in the draft. And they are. This, of course, has created the suggestion that teams tank games and I don’t think anybody wants a competition where teams benefit from losing. If the AFL had a relegation system the problem would be solved. No one wants to drop down a division, and, as is the case in England’s Premier League, the financial cost of dropping out of the top flight league is devastating. In the VAFA there is plenty to gain from staying up and moving up so it’s gloves-off time and the odd results are starting to trickle through. In A and B sections the top two teams, Collegians and Scotch, both posted losses last weekend and are both showing some indifferent form. Collegians were undefeated two rounds ago and were expected to storm through the finals and into A-section next season. Suddenly, the Lions have dropped their past two games and are now only half a game clear on top, with Old Brighton breathing down their neck. Surely, after spending the entire year on top, they will not cough up pole position. At the other end of the ladder, St.Kevin’s, Whitefriars and Mazenod are locked on points in the relegation battle. Incredibly, St.Kevin’s and Whitefriars have played A- section in the past two years, one of them will be in C- section next year, which is just a reminder a how quickly life can change. Old Scotch is in a similar boat to the Lions except the boat has a few more holes in it. The Cardinals have spent more time on top than any other team in A-section but it has the worst percentage in the four. Old Haileybury and Xavs are just one game behind the ladder leader and Scotch has Xavs this round and the Bloods in a fortnight. It is quite possible the Cardinals could slip to fourth, or even miss out on finals altogether given that Old Ivanhoe and De La are on the same points as the Blues and also have better percentages than Scotch. In C-section the St.Bedes/Mentone Tigers show keeps rolling on with a stratospheric percentage of 193.88. The Tigers are also undefeated and are looking the goods to be champions and premiers in what has been a stand- out year. In D-1 section ladder leader Old Carey managed to gain some breathing space on Bulleen Templestowe last week, moving a game clear after Bullants went down to Old Mentonians. Peninsula Old Boys and South Melbourne Districts have been brilliant in their sections, both on top with one loss for the year and in D-4 the top three teams, Hawthorn, Eltham and Powerhouse, are all locked on points and vying for the prize. Old Xavs don’t rate JamesGertsman as highly as therest of us. Overrated, some of them say. True, his record against theXaverians is modest, asthey always seem to match up well on him. Well if Scotch areto get that double chance, you’d reckon they have to beat Xavstoday and Gerta has to turn one on. In what must rank as anupset, I’ll tip Scotch to win and ensure they’ll be playing twofinals. Two weeks ago, Ivanhoe were playing for top spot.Today they will be grappling for a finals spot with a dauntingtrip to the Badlands. Too many big names out for Ivanhoe –Badlanders easily (though Ivanhoe have a tendancy to makemincemeat of my selections). At the Snakepit, the white hotBernies will officially cross Trinity off the list of finalscontenders. ‘Pitters just. The other two tip themselves….DeLa over Marcellin and Uni over OMs.

The Run Home ….Scotch - Trinity, Hail (Badlands), Marcellin – Okish. Haileybury – Xavs (TP), Scotch, Bernards – Awkward, nextweek’s game is huge.Xavs – Haileybury, De La (away), Trinity (Wick) – Tricky, butas if they’d miss.Uni – Marcellin (away), Ivanhoe, De La (away) – Doable buttwo tricky road-trips.

Potter Goes Higher Than Richard Pryor As Bernards Hang OnTo See Another A Section Year Amazing club St Bernards. In disarray a month ago, they haveregrouped, got their injured players back and last week rolledthe ladder leaders Scotch to virtually ensure their spot in thethe tier. In hindsight, the signs pointed to an upset; they hadbeen desperately unlucky not to beat two good sides in the lastfortnight and have a good record at CamberwellCongratulations to Callan Pottter who pulled down what hasbeen described as the best mark seen in Amateur footy foryears while Josh Madden almost pinched his prize minuteslater. More drama when Ben Loughlin, one of the mostcourageous amateur players I’ve seen, was blown halfway toHeidelburg as he was backing back Mark Harvey style into theoncoming James Gerstman. I was told from a young age thatif you’re suffer a serious injury in footy, do it when playing aScotch or Geelong Grammar team ‘cos chances are they’ll beabout a dozen doctors there. Low and behold, after being outcold, Ben was well looked after by a trio of doctors (one ofwhom was a Gyno!) and the various trainers and support staff. He will return next week and the Bernies will be back next year.

Quickly… I left Quicksand Park at 1/2 time last week, thinking that Xavswere in all sorts. Ockleshaw, Chatfield and co then turned on aseason defining third term that only Xavs could conjure up andin doing so may have turned a Premiership contender intomidtable fodder. That 30 minute burst aside, I have to mentionthe ground, which claimed my spanking new pair of Italian tanshoes. Never again Hoes! (famous last words). QuintonGleeson and Andrew Lowcock are having stellar seasons atMelbourne Uni but it’s significant that some of the secondstringers are stepping up: Chris Baumgartner (Boomer), BenMcConnell & Peter Steele. I’ll ‘fess up, I really want to see areplay of that 2005 GF and it’s getting more and more realistic.David Beardsley and Damien Buttler (in the best every gamebar one this year) got the nod at the Trinity, whose supportersgazed wistfully at the lumbering figure of their captain sittingthings out for the second week in a row…. Even more quickly,Haileybury belted Marcellin (the Badlanders are ticking alongvery nicely thanks you very much) and De La touched up OMs.Tim Silvers, better known as a full -back kicked four goals forthe fourth time this year. I embarked on a bender with Tim lastSpring Carnival and thought “well this bloke’ll never play sportagain” but he (and his side) has really reinvented himself thisyear, using his bulk and know-how to great advantage in thegoal-square.

Hey Gerta, They Reckon You’re A Lemon!Well…maybe not a lemon. But there’s no doubt that the folk at

great season in theruck, Matt Gadsden ishitting top form andDamien Hughes andJonno Edge gave plentyacross half back.

PREVIEWWell worth going down to Shark Park on Saturday towitness a clash that could ultimately decide which sidewill see some finals action this year. Both have thechance to perhaps shore up that spot today. Both ingood form with a couple of impressive wins in the lastfortnight. Beauy at home are hard to beat but I feel todaythe Blacks will make it 7 out of the last 8.Mazenod, after the heartbreak of the last fortnight, travelacross town to tackle Old Brighton who are very keen tomaintain that vital double chance. OB are very wellorganised at the moment and are giving their supportersgreat value that will continue today as I’m sticking withthem to inflict yet another loss on Mazenod.SKOB head out to Leura Road absolutely desperate fora win. OEG hopefully will have learnt a lesson from lastweek and will realise at this time of the year there are noeasy games. This won’t be easy either as Skevvies have

REVIEWMHSOB proved their form of last week was no fluke withan emphatic victory over a disappointing SKOB outfitthat for some inexplicable reason seemed to forget howto play. The young guns of MHSOB continue to improveand can now look forward with confidence to anothertenure in B Section. Josh Richmond was on fire upforward with 5 majors that perhaps could have been 10.Roger McIntyre dominated the Ruck, Rhys Limbrick wasjust brilliant, and Simon Anderson was also good. On asad note we all wish MHSOB veteran Drew Fairchild aspeedy recovery from a serious injury suffered inSaturday’s game. The University Oval was rather muddy but notimpossible to play on as the Blacks entered the top 4 forthe first time all season with a hard fought 1 point victoryover Collegians who lost their second game in a row. Nocause to panic yet for the Lions, while the Blacks areobviously a force to be reckoned with. Judd Lalich backin the side after a stint overseas was outstanding, MattKempton led by example and kicked the winning goal, and Anthony Evans also had a good one. Clint Harris,Marty Williams and Ben Robbins all good for Collegians, and a terrific debut by Lions U19 skipper Andrew Scott.OEG got a bit of a reality check out at Friar Park, as withtheir season on the line, Whitefriars had come to play.Perhaps a bit of overconfidence from the previous weekhad the Bombers nearly paying the supreme sacrifice.Friars work rate was super and they outplayed theirvisitors for most of the day and were perhaps unlucky togo down in the end. An ugly win bit good sides win ugly.Dermie Kavanagh, Faisal Flaherty, Leask the MasterBlaster and Trent Skurrie were the best of the OEG 22.Beaumaris needed to back up last week’s win andconsolidate their position. And that’s exactly what theydid against a Mazenod side that as usual gave their alland never stopped trying. The Sharks, apart fromsecuring their position in the Section have giventhemselves a slight chance of seeing finals action. SeanCoote and Luke McNicholas were again dominantperformers, Calvin Barnes and Aaron Sakisbury weredangerous up front and David Teasdale gave great driveoff half back.Old Brighton was terrific again as the Fields threweverything at them and led by their young guns they tookthe lot and gave plenty back. A few of them finished thegame a bit sore and with plenty of bruises. Leigh Hendrain the guts was sensational all day, his tackling, centreclearances and finishing especially in the last quarterwere critical to the teams win. Toby Ewart continues his

plenty to play for and are desperate for some points butyou just can’t go past the Bombers at Essendon.Poor Whitefriars now have to tackle the wounded Lionswho, after two losses on the trot will be looking tobounce back today and get some confidence back forthe weeks ahead. Whitefriars will certainly try theirhardest, but the return of a few players sees me tippingCollegians.MHSOB looked a quite impressive unit to me last weekand at home will be certainly confident against the sadlyout of form Grammarians. Needless to say with a toughrun home today is the last roll of the dice for the Fieldsand to put it mildly, they must win. I think they will asMHSOB perhaps just do not have the height orexperience to shut down the Sinclairs all day.

M I L E S T O N E SMILESTONESThree of Old Brighton’s stalwarts who began together in2000, have all recently reached 100 games for the club.Ross Stewart has the 2002 Senior B&F in the cabinet, and boasts a career highlighted by hard work in toughcontests where he has often been asked to shut downopposing star players. Now that he has been officiallytagged himself, spending last Saturday at the altar, thepressure is on Stewy to push to another ton! Goodmates Chris Reddin and Cam McKimm have also givengreat service and are popular figures at South Road.Cam is often pushing into the Senior side and he willcertainly be in the mix at finals time, while Redders, whowon the Ressies B&F last year, will be hoping that theCoy Boys can grab a pennant next month.Congratulations blokes, and we look forward to manymore games in the Red and Blue.

All at Caulfield Grammarians congratulate AndrewStrain who notches up his 50th game this week.Strainyhas developed into a wonderful player who shows greatpoise and courage across the backline. We all lookforward to many more games to come for The Fields.

    COACHES’ CLIPBOARDAFCA/VAFA

    A.F.C. V.A.F.A.

    “Your Coaches’ Association”

I have been asked ona number ofoccasions, “Whatumpires do attraining?”, followedby the predictable“..learn how to runbackwards?!”Well not quite thecase. The fitness of anumpire is extensive

and a very serious component of their overallperformances. Like a midfield football player, theywould simply be ineffective and make wrong decisionsif they were not capable of running to the correctposition.Recent statistics gathered by way of GPS of an AFLumpire (remembering they have 3 umpires) indicatesthat a field umpire runs an average distance of 14.5kmper game. A boundary umpire runs over 20km a game. Estimates of an average 2 umpire system of ‘A’ or ‘B’Grade umpires on grounds such as O.M.’s, Marcellinor Trinity would rate similar in overall distance. Of thisdistance, 15% is at top speed (over 20kph) and thesetop speed efforts range from 1 second to 15 secondbursts. (these are time at top speed only and do notinclude the increase to or decrease from the topspeed).

What does all this mean? It means that our umpiresnot only require a high level of overall fitness but alsoneed to be capable of repeat efforts at speed and yes, they need to be able to run backwards at times.

The training program of umpires can be broken into a

number of phases. During the off season they maintain their own fitnessby running, cycling or undertaking a number of otherrecreational activities. It is extremely rare for anumpire to have a complete rest during the off season.

Pre season training targets the base (endurance)fitness. It generally comprises of running drills ofbetween 400m and 1km at moderate intensity andwith equal or greater recovery. The overall distance ofthese drills varies between 6 to 10km.

As the season approaches, the overall distance willdecrease slightly as we begin to increase ourspecificity training. Running drills will decrease indistance to between 100 to 400m efforts again withequal or greater recovery. These training drills willsimulate what is more likely to occur in a real game.

During the season, umpire training is aimed atmaintaining the base (aerobic) fitness level whilstincreasing their anaerobic fitness combined withincrease in skill drills such as purely specific runninglike trigger points (short intense efforts) or backwardrunning drills.

As the season draws closer to finals football, umpireswill have the benefit of a taper period in their trainingwhich will allow them to reach their peak in fitness forFinals Football, meaning they will be best equipped tophysically and mentally cope with the footballmatches.

and both sides still in thethick of finals contention.Great to see GeorgeSmyth and Tommy Cravenback to their best for theAshes all day.

NOBSPC -v- Fitzroy RedsAgainst the run of form, this was a fantastic win by theRedders to retain the RedNOB Cup. The Reds couldn't shakeoff the persistent NOBSPC in the first half, but their thirdquarter was critical. The final scoreline was deceptive as itwasn't until the last quarter that the Redders put the foot onthe pedal. Kane Maghamez, Michael Grossman and ConnorDullard all came back from Willy, but the likes of MichaelLouis-Gleeson and Chris Meighen were even moreinstrumental in what will be an important victory.

Hampton Rovers -v- Old ParadiansIn what would always be a hard fought affair, Hampton Rovers'win has pretty much consigned Old Paradians to D Section for2007. A melee entertained the crowd during the third term, butwhen the heat was on in the final stanza, the home side roseto the occasion, kicking 4 to 1. Not surprisingly, the Rovers'club song rocked the Boss James clubrooms following themuch needed win. Unfortunately, it wasn’t all good news forthe Rovers, with a couple of injuries sustained, includinganother knee for Nick Greenwood. For Old Paradians, LukeDore and Ryan Murray continued their pleasing form.

Three weeks from the end of the regular season and the toptwo are all but settled. Pencil in a Tigers -v- Jackas secondsemi on the 2nd of September. At the other end of the ladder,Old Paradians are almost dead and buried now following theirloss to Hampton Rovers, who now sit equal with the Combineon 5 wins, but a fair way behind Fitzroy Reds. In between, there's so much drama and intrigue yet to come, so let’s havea brief look at last week, before we park the peepers to the1600 and get the race to the finishing post underway!!!

ReviewOrmond -v- AJAX A true see-sawing game saw the Jackas get over the line by 9points, spoiling David Robbins' 150th outing for the Monds.Trailing by 5 goals at the main change, Ormond kicked 6 in thethird term to leave the game up for grabs at the final change. However the Jackas dominated the first 15 minutes of the lastquarter to put the game beyond doubt. Ormond kicked the lastfour goals of the game to add some respectability. AnthonyRosen was the dominant forward on the ground kicking a bagfor the Jackas, who used Eugene Routman in a BOG effortgoing head-to-head with Miller. Ben Klein stood firm downback while Danny Markov proved a nuisance once again. ForOrmond, there weren't too many passengers, and Luke Duthieimpressed everyone as a good U19 propsect for the future.

Old Camberwell -v- STBMTNick Corda delivered a brilliant defensive job for STBMT asthey went on a massive rampage after quarter time against ahapless Wellers outfit. Paul Wintle bagged 8 goals from CHF,whilst Andrew Hayes ruck-roved and slotted four of his own ina dominant display. For Old Camberwell, Damian Mc Guiganwork hard all day down back, Stephen Derry's ruckwork was astandout, and the evergreen Anthony Hardenberg kicked 3goals in a lone hand up forward. They are still some chance forfinals action, but what will they do if they get there? Frankly, the 99 point demolition tells the competition what everyonealready knows - the Tigers are simply unbeatable when theyget going!!!

Monash -v- ParkdaleThe Monash -v- Parkdale stoush had everything including a bitof crowd niggle towards the men in white after the siren. Thesecond half was absorbing footy, man-on-man all over theground. With Monash 11 points ahead as the clock ticked intotime-on, Parkdale kicked a quick goal and then managed to getthe ball again into their goal square, where Sam Hecker took aone-handed grab and converted with 51 seconds remaining. One point up, Parkdale couldn't stop Monash surging forwardwhere the ball rolled into the teeth of goals before beingrushed by a desperate defence. End result - 2 points apiece

PreviewMonash couldn't possibly let another slip against Fitzroy Redscould they? I have a sneaking suspicion the Reds will keep theflame flickering for one more week at least, whilst saving theirbacon in the process. Redders by 7 points. Traditionally theWellers have struggled to toss Parade, but the motivation of4th spot should be enough to consign that record, and Parade,to the history books. OC by 28 points. The Tigers will extendtheir club record winning streak to 16 and leave NOBSPCteetering in 8th. Tigers by 43 points. The Ormond boys haverequested that I give them a wrap and I shall dutifully tip melid in the favour against Parkdale today. Monders by 3 goals atthe GGR. Finally, the Rovers are on a (one game) roll, but facea Jackas outfit which is seriously tuning up for a tilt at the flag.Provided AJAX don't get complacent about their 2 game bufferover 3rd spot, they should deliver by 25 points.

McGoosReds, OC, Tigers, Monds and AJAX (wow - pretty sure that'sthe first time all year I've tipped the same winners as the 1sts)

Burridge to have a biggame, while it was good tosee Therry’s DarrenGoodwin return to formlast week. I still feel thatoverall, BulleenTemplestowe have too many big guns across the park, andshould return to the winner’s circle. Bullants to win.Old Carey travel to Como Park for their clash with Old Geelong. This promises to be a great contest between two of thisseason’s pacemakers, and with the order of the final four (andin the Oggers’ case, their actual position) still to be confirmed, plenty of interest is assured. Oggers backmen such as AlMunro, Marty White and Steve Landsdell will be kept busy bythe likes of Al Parton and Travis Bull. At the other end of theground, young defenders Jessup and Barton, along with oldheads such as Chris Battle, will be tested by classy playerssuch as Nic Casboult and Colby O’Brien. Class abounds onboth teams, but I have the feeling that the Panthers may bethat bit better across the board. Old Carey to win.Rupertswood and St. Leo’s Emmaus face off at SalesianCollege Sunbury, in a must-win match for both sides. Again, another contest where both teams have plenty of incentive towin, albeit for different reasons, with Rupo losing their wayover the last couple of months after looking a big show forfinals after the first six weeks, while the Animals have salvagedsome respectability over the last few weeks in their bid tostave off relegation. Both teams have had a similar run of formin recent weeks, but at home, this is a good opportunity forRupertswood to get back in the saddle and resume their finalsrace. Rupo for me.

    D1 SECTIONby Peter Williamson

REVIEWA thriller in Keysborough saw Old Mentonians, despite someshaky goalkicking in the final term, pip promotion contendersBulleen Templestowe by three points. Brent Fairbank with sixgoals, Peter Flaskis and 50 game man Blake Carroll were keyperformers for the Panthers.Prahran won the battle of the cellar dwellers at Toorak Park, beating Banyule by a comfortable 38 points. After an iffy firstquarter in front of the sticks, the Two Blues lifted considerably, with John Thwaites at half back, and midfielders HamishHodgson and skipper Leigh Northway particularly influential.Emmaus St. Leo’s let a four goal lead early in the last quarterslip, after having turned around a four goal half time deficit, eventually succumbing to Yarra Valley OB by 7 points.Defenders Adam ‘Maynard’ Krebs and Jack Pascoe, and PhilCarey in the midfield stood out for the Animals, while Valleymidfielders Phil Valoppi and Ash Drew continued their terrificrun of form.At John Pascoe Fawkner Reserve, Therry Penola battled hard, but Old Geelong proved too strong in the final term, overwhelming the Lions to win by 22 points. Andrew Forster-Knight continued his great form in the Lions’ back half.Old Carey took the outright lead after defeating Rupertswoodby 28 points at Dunshea Oval. A terrific all-round team effortby the Panthers, with the form of youngsters Stu Jessup andChristian Barton particularly encouraging.

PREVIEWBanyule host Old Mentonians at R.J. Brockwell Oval. OldMentonians continue to provide good nuisance value for thefinals contenders, thus definitely being one of those teams that“shape the four”, while the Bears will look to end their lengthylosing run and try to climb out of the relegation zone. It willbe interesting to see whether Banyule’s David Gayfer lines upon Michael Basile or Chad Twentyman, and if the rest of theOld Mentonians forwards get to exploit the extra opportunitiesthat would otherwise be taken up by their key forwards.Panthers for mine.Prahran make the journey to Domeney Reserve for their matchagainst Yarra Valley. Prahran’s form has been encouraging inrecent times, and will still harbour hopes of escaping the dropzone whilst there are still enough games to play. On the otherhand, the Bushrangers have been as good as any team in thecomp in the last couple of months or so, and will see today asthe perfect opportunity to further strengthen their finalsclaims. Each team still has something at stake, so all signspoint towards a promising contest. I’ll take the Bushies today.Bulleen Templestowe take on Therry Penola at Ted AjaniReserve. Both sides still have plenty to play for, the Bullantsstill pushing to confirm a double chance come finals action, while the Lions continue to strive for preservation of their D1status for the 2007 season. Look for the Bullants’ Kain

A slew of celebrations for St. Leo’s Emmaus. Tim“Twinkles” Tribe reached the 100 game mark inRound 13. Joining the club in 2000, he hasestablished himself as a hard running seniorplayer, still haunted by missing the 2002premiership. “Fanta Pants” continues to give greatdirection on the Animals committee and shouldresume playing soon after corrective facialsurgery. Steven Buckle played his 200th game inRound 14, having commenced in 1994 with theU/19’s. “Bucksy” has grown into a championplayer, winning the C section Best and Fairest (L.S.Zachariah Medal) in 1999, VAFA rep. Honours2000-2005, club Best and Fairest and premiershipplayer in 2002, and joint club captain in 2006.Bucksy is a talented linkman and ball carrier whoseon-field leadership is a key part of the Animalsgame (unlike his off-field activities, which can besomewhat off-putting). Nic Robin played his 50thgame, also in Round 14, and is a young player withheaps of potential who started in the U/19’s in2004, and won both the U/19’s Best and Fairestand Best On Ground (T.M. Lyon Medal) in theGrand Final in 2005 (where he also picked up apremiership medal), and has continued this run ofform into the seniors. Congratu
