Principal’s Message

School Improvement Sincere thanks to our P&C for their very productive conversations at last week’s meeting about how everyone in the

school community can contribute to our continual improvement. As it is well and truly ‘evaluation, reporting and

forward planning season’, I was able to provide an update on some of our key achievements in 2012 and targets for

2013.

Students’ growth in their learning across the school has once again been very strong throughout 2012. Targets for the

coming year will continue to focus on Literacy and Numeracy skills, utilising specific strategies and supporting

teachers in further professional development, leading to best practice. Other whole school targets include

improvements in: Student Engagement and Retention; Student Transition; Community Engagement; and

Environmental Sustainability.

Secondary Scripture It has been some years since scripture lessons have been an option for secondary students at Bowraville Central

School. We would like to provide this learning opportunity upon request. In order for qualified staff to be engaged and

so that timetabled lessons may be allocated, we ask any parents of secondary students in 2013 who wish for their son

or daughter to take part in Scripture lessons to indicate this by a simple phone call to the front office before the end of

this month.

Have a great week.

BCS Students compete at the Macksville Gift

Last weekend students from our school achieved some

excellent results at the Macksville gift. Anthony

Walker won the 70m amateur sprint and Sam Kete ran

in both the gift and the novice 120m sprint. This was

the first time Sam had raced professionally and he

surprised many people by working his way through to

the final. He came third in the novice final in a very

close race which was an outstanding achievement.

Bowraville Central School was mentioned several

times throughout the day when the boys were

introduced in their races.

In the Little Athletics Carnival which ran in conjunction

with the gift, Nesta Walker won the 300m pack start

race. Anthony Walker came second in the 15 and over

sprint. Simon, Joven and India Walker also did well in

their races.

World Champion

Our Physical Education teacher, Joel Mason recently

travelled to Cabo in Mexico to compete at the

Hennessey World Paddle Association World

Championships.

The 181/2 km. down-wind race was held in ideal

conditions, paddling his 18ft paddle-board lying

down.

Mr. Mason left his stamp on the event with a 1st

place overall finishing in the Men’s unlimited Paddle

Board section. He held on to his 1st place position for

the entire race to take a well deserved overall

victory.

Mr. Mason said he’d like to thank BCS for their

support this year and he hopes that his success on

the world stage helps to inspire students to follow

their dreams.

Mrs. Perkins

Physical Culture

Emma, Sara and Megan Johnstone recently

competed in the North Coast Zone Championships at

Coffs Harbour. All three competed in the same team

for the 15/16 Year Teams competition, with Sara and

Megan learning extension work to make up the

Urunga team. This was the first time they’d been in

the same team. Their team placed 3rd on the day,

which was a great effort (six teams competed).

In the 13/14 Year individual competition, Sara and

Megan performed well, with the group of girls having

to repeat their work before the judges could decide

on the State finalists. Unfortunately Sara and Megan

missed out on a place, on the day.

In the 15/16 Year individual competition Emma was

selected to compete in the State Finals in Sydney.

This was a wonderful achievement as she has been a

State Finalist every year since she started Physi (10

years ago). Next year she is looking forward to

competing as a senior. At the State Finals last

weekend Emma performed well but wasn’t selected

for the Grand Finals. In this age group 36 girls

competed, divided into three heats. Only 12 girls

were selected for the Grand Finals.

If anyone is interested in finding out about Physical

Culture in our area, please talk to Emma, Sara or

Megan. The Physi year usually starts in mid-February

each year.
