Bow Clutch with Wrist Strap

Supplies:

• ¼ yard of print cotton fabric • ½ yard of coordinating solid (or tone on tone) cotton fabric • ¼ yard of lightweight fusible batting • INSPIRA® Tear-A-Way stabilizer • 10” or longer nylon zipper • Construction thread • Chalk marker • Ruler

Cut: From solid fabric:

• One 3”square for center of bow • One piece 2” x 6” for left front • One piece 6½” x 6” for center front • One piece 3½” x 6” for right front • One piece 10” x 6” for back • One piece 13” x 2½” for wrist strap

From print fabric:

• One piece 8” x 14” for bow • Two pieces 10” x 6” for lining

From fusible batting:

• One piece 10” x 6” (fuse to back) • One piece 2” x 6” (fuse to left front) • One piece 3½” x 6” (fuse to right front) • One piece 6½” x 6” ( fuse to center front)

Prepare: 1. Wind a bobbin with construction thread that will contrast with the solid fabric

and insert the full bobbin.

2. Thread the machine with that same construction thread.

3. Snap on the foot for stitching decorative stitches.

4. Fuse all the batting pieces to the wrong side of their corresponding bag pieces according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Decorative Stitching 1. Use ruler and chalk marker to draw a vertical line from the center of one 2”

side to the center of the other 2” side.

2. Place the stabilizer under the 2” x 6” cotton fabric for left front.

3. Choose a decorative stitch and sew it on a scrap piece of the solid fabric with stabilizer underneath to test. If satisfied, proceed.

4. Sew the decorative stitch along the drawn line, keeping the stabilizer underneath.

5. Carefully tear away the stabilizer.

6. Place 3½” x 6” stabilizer under the 3½” x 6” right front fabric

7. Using ruler and chalk marker, draw a parallel line 1” away from one of the 6” sides.

8. Choose a decorative stitch, test, and then sew along the line with stabilizer underneath.

9. Choose another decorative stitch, test, and keeping the right edge of the presser foot against the previous line of stitching, sew a second row of decorative stitching.

10. Choose another decorative stitch, test, and keeping the right edge of the presser foot against the previous line of stitching, sew a third row of decorative stitching.

11. Carefully tear away the stabilizer.

12. Place the 10” x 6” stabilizer under the 10” x 6” back fabric.

13. Using a ruler and chalk marker, draw a parallel line 2” from one of the 6” sides.

14. Choose a decorative stitch, test, and then sew along the line with stabilizer underneath.

15. Choose another decorative stitch, test, and keeping the right edge of the presser foot against the previous line of stitching, stitch a second row of decorative stitching.

16. Choose another decorative stitch, test, and keeping the right edge of the presser foot against the previous line of stitching, stitch a third row of decorative stitching.

17. Carefully tear away the stabilizer.

18. Fold the 3” square center bow fabric in half and finger press.

19. Place the 3” square stabilizer beneath the 3” square center bow fabric.

20. Choose a decorative stitch, test on scrap, and then sew along the pressed line.

Making the Bow: 1. Fold the 6½” x 6” center cotton fabric piece in half one way and then again in

half the other way, pinching to mark a pressed crosshair in the center. Set aside.

2. Fold the 3” center bow square right sides together with the decorative stitch in the fold.

3. Select straight stitch . Sew a ¼” seam down the long raw edges.

4. Turn right side out and position the seam directly behind the decorative stitch. Press.

Zigzag  stitches  Center

5. Fold the strip lengthwise so the short raw edges align and the decorative stitch is on the outside.

6. Choose a zigzag stitch and sew across the raw edges.

7. Using the diagram as a guide, stitch over the previous zigzag stitches with another row of zigzag stitching that attaches the bow’s center to the front center piece of the bag.

8. Fold the 8” x 14” rectangle of print bow fabric right sides together aligning the raw edges of the two 8” sides.

9. Select straight stitch . Sew a ¼” seam down the 8” side, turn right side out and press.

10. Insert one raw edge side of this unit through the bow center so there is an even amount of fabric on each side of the center piece.

11. Keeping raw edges aligned, pin the bow edges to the center front bag side edges, starting and ending 1” from the top and bottom. Fold a pleat (or two) to make the bow lay flat along the raw edge. Pin well.

12. Place the left front bag piece right sides together with the center piece sandwiching the bow in the middle. Line up the 6” raw edges on the center piece’s left side. Sew a ¼” seam. Press.

13. Place the right front bag piece right sides together with the center piece sandwiching the bow in the middle. Line up the 6” raw edges on the center piece’s right side. Sew a ¼” seam. Press.

Making the Strap:

1. Press the 13” strap strip in half lengthwise. Open flat again and press the long edges till they align with the center fold. Finally re-press the center fold, encasing the long raw edges.

2. Topstitch close to both long folded sides of this strip.

3. Choose a zigzag stitch and zigzag the raw edges of both strap ends together.

4. Align the zigzagged edge of the strap with the left raw edge of the bag front unit, positioning the strap 1” down from the top edge.

5. Select straight stitch . Stitch in place with ¼” seam. Inserting the Zipper:

1. Place the bag front right side up on a flat surface then place the zipper right side down along the top edge as shown.

2. Baste along the top edge with a long stitch length �” from the edge.

3. Place one of the lining pieces right sides down on top of this unit aligning the top 10” edge. Sew a ¼” seam to attach the front piece, zipper, and lining piece together.

4. Unzip the zipper.

5. Fold the lining piece back over the zipper half till it is wrong sides together with the front piece.

6. Position the unstitched half of the zipper so that it is right side down on the bag back piece.

7. Baste along the top edge with a long stitch length �” from the edge.

8. Place the remaining lining piece right side down on top of this unit aligning the top 10” edge. Sew a ¼” seam to attach the back piece, zipper, and lining piece together.

9. Close the zipper halfway.

10. Lift lining pieces so they are right sides together above the zipper and bag pieces. Pin to secure all three raw edges.

11. Pin around the raw edges of the two bag pieces.

12. Starting at the base of the lining, sew a �” seam around one side of the lining piece, across the zipper (hand turn the fly wheel over the coils), around all three sides of the bag pieces, across the other end of the zipper, and finally back to the base of the lining. Leave a 4” opening for turning.

13. Turn everything right side out.

14. Topstitch the opening closed in the base of the lining.

15. Press and tuck the lining inside your bag.

16. Zip it closed and you are finished! Bravo!!!
