History:ThismuralisapostcardrepresentationofBoulderCity’sjourney,depictingtheconstructionofBoulderCanyonDamProject,nowknownasHooverDam,BoulderDamHotel,theshantytownsthis project created, the creation and development of Boulder City, the coming of TWA and theBoulderCityAirport,aswellasahintat thenatural beautyof thedesertand indigenouswildlife,includingBigHornSheep.

History:MuralillustratesalandscapesceneofBoulderCity.Itwasbuiltonfederallyownedlandsbythegovernmentintheearly1930saspartoftheBoulderCanyonDamProject.Oncebuilt,itwasoverseenbyasingleU.S.BureauofReclamationemployeewiththeabilitytoevictanyoneforanyreason.Alcoholandgamingwerestrictlyprohibited.Ittook30yearsfortheresidentstobereleasedfromgovernmentrule.Onceontheirown,theyquicklyincorporatedBoulderCityin1960andbuiltameccaofadventureandculture.

History:TheGreatDepressioncoincidedwiththebuildingofthetallestdamandlargestreservoirevercreatedatthattime.TheHooverDamwasspearheadedbyPresidentHoover,butnegativitysproutingfromtheGreatDepressionandtheelectionofFranklinRooseveltbroughtcontroversytoitsfinalname.OftenusingthetermBoulderorHooverDamwasadirectreflectionofthespeaker’spoliticalviewpoint.In1947,PresidentTrumanputanendtothecontroversy,namingittheHooverDam.ThismuralfeaturesaportraitofFrankCrowe,ChiefEngineer,whoorchestratedtheconstructionoftheHooverDamandthehousingcrisisitcreated.
Housingwasnon-existentin1929justpriortothebeginningofconstructionontheBoulderCanyonDamProject.Somuchso,bunkhouseswerehastilyconstructedandattachedtocanyonwallstohouse480singleworkmen.ItwastougherformenwithfamiliessuchastheresidentsofWilliamsvilleorRagtown.Tentcitiesorsquattercampssprangupeverywherebeginningin1929,justpriortothestartofDamconstruction. Shantytowns, like Ragtown, often consisted of housing made of cardboard boxes, tinscraps,andanyothermaterialthatcouldbeputtogethertofightoffthefreezingnightsandswelteringheat of the days. Luxuries like running water and bathroom facilities were nonexistent. Still, theunemployed kept coming swelling Ragtown to more than 5,000 residents before housing wasconstructedinwhatwouldbecomeBoulderCity.

History: Work conditionsat theDamwere evenharsher than the livingconditions.Workerslaboredsevendaysaweekintemperaturessometimesreachingover119degrees.Oftenfacingcarbon monoxide poisoning, dehydration, heat prostration and electrocution caused bycarelesslyplacedelectricallines.Workerstoiledintheseconditionsfor$.50to$1.25anhour.

History:ByJuly1934,SixCompanies,Inc.,thecombinedsixcompaniesthatbuilttheHooverDam,employed5,251men.By1931,housingwasbeingconstructedforworkersandtheirfamiliesinwhatisnowknownasBoulderCity.Thismuralreflectsthe150HooverDamheavymachineoperatorsandlaborerswhotraveledtoandfromworkeachdayonbusessimilartotheonedepictedinthismural.

The ColonialRevival-styleBoulderDamHotelopenedtoofficialvisitorsandtouristsin1933.FamouscelebritiessuchasHowardHughes,BorisKarloff,BetteDavis,ShirleyTemple,Mr.andMrs.CorneliusVanderbilt,Jr.aswellasdignitaries likethethen-CrownPrinceOlavandPrincessMarthaofNorway,alongwithsenators,andevenafuturePopeallstayedatthisthenfamed“resortdestination”whiletheyvisitedtheHooverDam,soughtsolitude,orwaitedimpatientlyfortheir“quickie”divorcetocomethroughinnearbyLasVegas.

History:BoulderDamHotelwasbuiltforW.F.GreybyP.S.Webbwho laterpurchased thehotelbackfrom Grey in 1935. This grand dame of its time offered twenty-two rooms with private baths, airconditioning,andaregalwoodpaneledlobby.Unfortunately,bythestartofWorldWarII,thepublic’sinterestintheDamhaddiminished,andwithittourismwaned.

History:Uniqueamongrailroads,thisstretchofrailroadtrackswasbuiltbythefederalgovernment,UnionPacific,andaprivatecontractorexplicitlyforthepurposeoftransportingstone,sandandothermaterials to theBoulderCanyonDamProject. Originally comprisedof three railroads, theywereoftenreferredtoastheUSGovernmentConstructionRailroadortheHooverDamRailroad.Thethreeraillinesoperateddailyfrom1931untiltheendoftheDamprojectin1935.

History: These murals depict the pioneering spirit and introduction of business to Boulder City.Construction of housing exploded in 1932 as the federal government, by way of the Bureau ofReclamation,beganbuildinghomesforthelaborers.Homeswentupsoquicklyitwasnotuncommonforamantoreturnafterworkandwalkintothewronghouse.Withnewhomescamenewbusinesses.ManyoftheworkersremainedaftertheHooverDamwasbuiltandopenedbusinessesastheeconomystabilized.ThisbuildingwasbuiltinJuneof1948afterafiredestroyedtheoriginalBoulderLaundryandCleanersonNevadaWay.
