TThe 2002 World Cup was a first on two counts – never beforewas a World Cup co-hosted or held in Asia. In June, Korea andJapan hosted the international soccer matches and Bose waspart of the action. Our professional speakers helped the sell-out crowds at Miyagi Stadium in Japan enjoy each excitingsoccer game.

Miyagi Stadium is locatednear Sendai City, a city in north-east Japan with a population ofabout 1 million. The multi-spiralstadium seats approximately50,000 people. During the 2002World Cup, the facility hostedsoccer teams from Mexico,Ecuador, Sweden andArgentina. Adding to the excite-

ment, Japanese soccer fans had the opportunity to see theirhome team compete against Turkey on June 18. AlthoughJapan lost, 0 to 1, the match received an audience rating of62.4 percent, the highest for a daytime TV broadcast.(Because it was the first time that Japan got into the best 16,most Japanese became instant soccer fans for this historicalevent.)

Miyagi Prefecture owns the stadium. Officials wanted light-weight, weather-resistant speakers that could deliver consis-tent, high-quality sound in a range of weather conditions andwith various audience sizes. Using the Auditioner® demonstr-tion system, BKK Professional Systems Division was able to demonstrate the features and benefits of our products to thesound consultant and local officials.

Our Panaray® LT 3202 (top row) and Panaray LT 4402speakers (bottom row) help spectators enjoy the sports actionat Miyagi Stadium. To provide intelligibility and well-con-trolled directivity of the sound, we installed Panaray® LT 3202-II, LT 4402-II and 502® BEX speakers under the balcony in thecovered section of the stadium and in the ground level seat-ing area. Our Bass Array technology provided directional bassto the target seating areas for balance throughout the audi-ence area.

The project was challenging because construction andinstallation were, in some cases, taking place at the sametime. Several steel frames were suddenly placed in the middleof our bass array speakers, and we were forced to change thespeaker layout so that the low frequencies would not beblocked. But with the different signal processing, we wereable to maintain the same controlled directivity with differentlayout.

“Using our professional products and technology, we wereable to provide the best possible sound quality,” said AkiraMochimaru. “Our customerwas impressed with the sys-tem’s performance, and ourability to react to constructionchanges quickly, and specta-tors were able to receive accu-rate information during eachgame – even above the roar ofthe boisterous crowd.”
