Lesson 5: Using Web 2.0 Application—Making a Contribution to the World Wide Web Community Goals of this lesson: This lesson will familiarize the user with one common Web 2.0 application—Wikispaces, or more specifically the BOSCO-Uganda Wikispace -The user will learn what a Wikispace is used for and why it is considered to be an important Web 2.0 application -The user will become a member of the BOSCO Wikispace, enabling him or her to make a personal contribution to the site through posting of text, documents, photos, links, or other relevant materials -The user will learn how to edit pages relevant to his/her location, i.e., users in Pagak will learn how to edit the Pagak Wikispace page as to benefit and educate people in their location

A.WhatisaWikispace?

AWikispacesiteisafullyeditablewebpageforoneormanycommunities.Itisaplaceonthewebwherecommunitymemberscancometogethertoaddtheirowncontenttoitspages.Whenindividualsfromdifferentlocationscancometogethertomeetonthewebandaddtheirowncontent(i.e.,postings),wecallthisWeb2.0collaboration.

ThepurposeoftheBOSCOWikispacesiteistoencourageBOSCOusersateachlocationtoempowertheirownlocalcommunityusingtheInternet.OntheBOSCOWikispace,userswillfindahomepagefortheirlocation.ThatmeansPagakhasapage,Coopehasapage,Pabohasapage,etc.

UsersineachlocationshouldbecomefamiliarwithhowtopostcontentontheBOSCOWikispace.Usersmaypostany(appropriate)informationthattheywantonthissite.Asanexample,wehavealreadyseensomeuserspostfarmingproposals,someteachersarejournaling(blogging)aboutlifeduringthewar,somepeopleareaddingphotosfromtheirlocation,othersareaddingshortstoriesandnews…andthelistgoesonandon!

RememberthesepagesareontheInternetforeveryonetoseearoundtheworld.Thisisthewaythatpeoplearoundtheworldcangettoknowwhoyouare!Actwiselyandresponsiblyanddon’tbeafraidtoaddyourowncontenttothespacesoftheBOSCOWikispace.

Forprivacyreasons,youmustfirstsignupandthenrequesttobeamemberbeforeyouwillbeallowedtopostyourowncontentonthepages.

Task:SignupforBOSCOWikispacesbycreatinganaccount(seeLesson4forinstructions)

Task:NowthatyouhaveausernameandpasswordyouwillstillneedtorequesttobeamemberoftheBOSCOWikispacebeforeyouwillbepermittedtopostonthesite.PleaserequesttobeamemberoftheBOSCOWikispacebyfollowingthesesteps:

C.EditingWikispacePages,andaddingyourownpage

OnceyouhaveregisteredforWikispacesandhaverequestedtobeamemberoftheBOSCOWikispace,youwillbeabletopostyourowncontentontotheBOSCOWikispaces.Manypeoplepoststories,photos,proposalsforcommunitydevelopmentprojects,journalentries,andmanyotherthings.Youcanalsoeditpagesthatotherpeoplehavepostedon.Rememberthatthisspaceisyourown,somakeitgreat!EachBOSCOlocation(e.g.Pagak,Pabo,Coope,etc.)hasalinkonthelefthandsideoftheWikispacewhichwilldirectyourtoyourWikispacehomepage.

Task:UserwilleditapreviouslyexistingWikispacepage.

‐Gotowww.bosco‐uganda.wikispaces.comandsignintoyourWikispaceaccount.‐Aftersigningin,clickonthelinkforyourlocation—let’spretendthatIaminPagakforthislesson,soIwillwanttoeditwithinthePagakhomepage.

YouwillbegintoseethePagakhomepage.Afterthepageloads,asanexamplepagetoedit,IwillclickonthefirstlinkatthetopleftofthePagakpage(“PagakBOSCOUsers…”)

Whenthispageopensup,youcanbegineditingitscontents.Editingmeanschangingthetext,addingtothetext,correctingthetext,andaddinglinks,photos,orotheritems.ToeditanypageinWikispaces,click“EditthisPage”atthetopofthewindow.

Afterclicking“EditThisPage”thepagewillloadandyouwillseeatoolbaronthetopallowingyoutomakevariouschangestothepage.Let’sstartwiththeeasiestchangetomake:addingtextEditingthetextisverysimple.YoujustusethemouseandcursortoaddtextinthesamewayyouwouldifitwasaWorddocument.Asanexample,let’saddmynametothepageandasentenceaboutmyself.

Onceyouarefinishededitingoraddingtexttothepage,youwillwanttoclick“Save”locatedontherighthandsideofthetoolbarabove.Afterclicking“Save,”thewebpagewillloadandwillpublish(show)thechangesyouhavemade.

Youwillseethetoolbaremergeabovethepage’stext.Ontheleftyouhavefontadjustments.Toolsforaddingphotos,links,andotheritemsareontheright.

Addingphotosisalsoveryeasy.Navigatetothepageyouwanttoeditandthenclick“EditThisPage”justasyoudidabove.Clickonthe“Image”iconinthetoolbar

Afterclickingontheicon(picture)apopupwindowwillemerge.Wikispacestoresphotosonthewebinitsownlibrary.IfyourphotoisnotyetintheBOSCOWikispacelibrary,youwillneedtouploadonefromyourcomputer.Clickon“UploadFiles”

• Afterclicking“UploadFiles”youwillclickon“Browse.”Thiswillopenanotherpopupwindowonyourcomputer.Atthatpointyoumustbrowsethroughyourcomputersfilesandselectthepicturefilethatyouwanttoupload.

Clickonthefileyouwanttouploadandthenpress“Select”or“Open”atthebottomrightofthepopupwindow.

Selectfileyouwanttouploadbyclickingonit.

Afterclicking“Open”youwillbetakenbacktotheuploadmenu;click“Upload”Uploadingmighttakeafewminutes;bepatient.Youwillknowthatitisdoneuploadingwhenyouseeasmallversionofyourphotoappearinthewindow.

Onceyourphotoisuploaded,itwillnowbeintheBOSCOWikispaceslibraryofimages.Clickon“InsertFiles”intheabovewindow Youmustrememberthefilenameofyourphoto.Inthiscase,myphotoiscalled“Pagak.jpg”;Clickonthe“P”atthebottomofthelibrarytobetakentotheplacewhereallphotosbeginningwithletter“P”arestored.

Onceyoufindyourimageonthepage,simplydoubleclickanditwillbeautomaticallyinsertedintoyourWikispacepagethatyouarecurrentlyeditingAdjustthesizeofthephotoinsidetheWikispacepageyouareeditingbyclickingonthe“+”or“‐“button.Smallerphotostakelesstimetoloadandapreferable.

Click“Save”onthetoolbarandyourimagewillbesavedontheWikispacepage.Congratulations,youhavejustpublishedaphotoontheweb!

Similartoeditingapreexistingpage,youcanalsoaddanentirelynewpagetotheWikispaces.Thisisusefulifyouwanttomakeanewpagethatwillsolelycontaininformationonyourorganizationorprogram,forexample.

• Apopupwindowwillemergeafterclickingontheicon.Whenitappears,

simplyclick,“AddLink”andyourlinkwillbecomeactive,leadingtothecreationofanewWikispacepage

• Afteryouhavefinishedthis,click“Save”onthetoolbaratthetop;YourlinkwillnowbecomeactiveontheBOSCOWikispace

• Afterclicking“Save”thepagewillloadnormally.Whenitloadsclickonyournewlinktobetakentoanew,freshpagethatyoucanbegintoaddcontenton

• Whenyouopenyournewlinkanewpagewillappearthatsays,“Thispagedoesn’texistyet.Youcancreateitbyclickingthe“editbutton.”Clickthelinkthesays,“editbutton”tobegincreatingcontentforyournewpage.

• Begintypinganytext,photos,linksorothercontentthatyouwanttomakeapartofthisnewpage.Whenyouaredoneaddingcontenttothepage,click“Save”onthefarrightssideofthetoolbarAfterclicking“Save”yournewlycreatedpagewillbedisplayed.
