SAFETY COMPETITION HELD AT KAMLOOPSS;30 a.m. June 12 - Riverside Park .Your First Aid team is first on the field, captain Kinky Borsato warily leads the way toward the storage building on a large estate. An elderly caretaker can be seen trying to start a gasoline powered lawn mower. One of the judges is loudly demanding that the caretaker hurry up. A flash and a loud report end this dialogue. The gas tank has exploded, ignited by a cigarette. The caretaker stumbles out of the building moaning and falls to the ground. "The game is on."The patient has to be examined for Injuries by the captain, who is directing his team in the meantime, one to bring supplies, another a stretcher and blankets, another to send for medical aid and so on.Treatment for shock is started at once and examination shows that the victim has also to be treated for burns, a fractured Jew and an abdominal wound with bowel protrusion.Everything is soon organized and coming along nicely but close by a screen of spruce tress has been placed and now from behind them, there occurs another and louder explosion, followed by screams of pain and cries for help. Our captain details a man to look after the injury case, takes help and runs around the screen of trees to take charge of another case.(None of our team would go through these trees We were all afraid they were a booby trap of some sort). Behind them is found a man on the ground who has walked, into an unguarded blast area, with extremely deleterious results to his person. His injuries consisted of serious hemorrhage, fractures to both upper limbs and both lower limbs and other wounds as well. Despite the extent, of these Injuries, your team was able to carry out
treatments, load the patient on the stretcher and remove him to the ambulance in the time allotted. "Game over."In the senior men's class there were teams competing from the mines at Bethlehem, Craigmont, Bralorne, Kamloops, Princeton and Cassiar. The team from Craigmont placed first and was eligible to compete in the B. C. finals held at Nanaimo on June 26th„The local team were: Kinky Borsato, captain, Lloyd Selk, Oliver Reid, Terry Treasure and yours truly. On behalf of the team, I wish to express our thanks to management for sponsoring the entry.
