Rene Magritte was born in Belgium in 1898 and attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.
He went to Paris for a short time and worked with the surrealists.
He studied philosophy and made a science of thinking.
Although his work was considered outrageous, he lived a conventional lifestyle.
He spent his life painting and living quietly in Brussels.
He and his wife were married for 45 years until his death in 1967.
Many of his works contain what seem like jokes.
He liked the mystery, and he wanted people to think about what they were seeing.

He painted normal things not in their normal places alongside other normal things where they would not normally be, hoping people would look at them as if seeing them for the first time.
