Since its establishment, Born in Africa (BIA) has been involved in water awareness. To date more than 850children of all ages and communities in and around Plettenberg Bay have benefited from our swimmingprogrammes. Each year Born in Africa has hosted two swimming courses. During the swimming course, agroup of learners are taught the basic skills of water safety and swimming skills. It was two years ago duringthe swimming lessons where we identified a group of exceptional swimmers and embarked on furthering theirbasic swimming skills. We approached the Plett Surf Lifesaving Club and the learners were welcomed into itsNippers programme. The original Born in Africa Nippers development team competed so well that they eachsecured a permanent place in the club and compete in the various Nippers competitions (this entails sprint, long distance, flags, swim, body-boarding and mali-boarding). We are very proud of this group and would liketo congratulate Marcell Paterson, Ellen and Robert Kleinsmidt, Celine Olivier and Nicole Jacobs who all hailfrom Kranshoek on this achievement. This year during the National Champs held in Durban, they once againproved that hard work and dedication is key to success and our Born in Africa team walked away with 5 thand6thplaces respectively and even secured two gold and one bronze medals!

In just two years from now, they will qualify to commence their life saving courses, will be able to work on thebeach and earn a nice income to support themselves and their families! 2016 also saw yet again anotherannual swimming course taking place in Kranshoek and from the group of 35, 10 learners qualified tocomplete winter swimming training so that they too can join the Nippers clan which commences in October2016. What a brilliant success story and so we conclude by continuing our water awareness program ensure

that many children from Plettenberg Bay and surrounding communities, have the opportunity to become watersafe!

Ellen Kleinsmidt, one of our nippers, was captain of the Plett Surf team at NationalsWhat an honour.

    Welldone!

Kumon Math ProgrammeWinning at Water Polo

Entering Wittedrift High at Gr 8 level is daunting for all thestudents especially coming from a previously disadvantagedbackground. Born in Africa ensures that its students receive thebest education possible while attending the school and haveenrolled its 12 Gr 8 pupils to receive Mathematical tutoring bySusan Dold of the Kumon Math programme. This gives thestudents the opportunity to discus problematic areas in thecomfort of smaller groups and sheoffers them guidance as their

mathematical year progresses. Weare so grateful for Susan who hasreally done wonders for this groupof learners already.

Susan continues to assist ourKranshoek Primary groupcomprising of 10 learners with theirmathematical skills. They follow avery specified program, eachworking at his/her own pace toperfect ones mathematical skills.

    Mentorship Programme

    Happy birthday to you!

With term 1 of 2016 done and dusted, we also completed ourfirst series of group sessionthemes with the Born in Africalearners. Two themes for term 1 were offered, the first beingThe importance of Communication and Listening skills. Thiscertainly resonated with the older students as successfulcommunication skills open so many opportunities in life andplay such an important role in tertiary studies and futureemployment opportunities!

Term 1 -Communication and Listening Skills

Dealing constructively with emotions was also a part of thissession and it turned out to be most helpful as many youngpeople struggle with identifying and expressing theiremotions. Positive ways in bringing hidden emotions to thesurface were also instilled as part of the sessions.

Protective behaviours was our other theme and thisimportant group session theme was about protecting ourchildren against all forms of child abuse. Various forms ofabuse was discussed as well as methods on making yourvoice heard should you ever be made to feel threatened. Both these themes were received very well by the Born inAfrica children and they were introduced to them in smallgroups by means of role play, poems and much more. Welldone to our mentors who continue to play such an importantrole in our children's development and progress into youngadults. The monthly group session themes are of course justa portion of what the mentors assist the children in.

Many godparents communicate with their godchildren andthe mentors take time to assist the children in writingresponses on the letters. Thank you cards for gifts aremade, homework assistance is offered on a daily basis andvery importantly individual sessions held with each child. Theindividual sessions offer the child the perfect platform toraise any personal issues which the child is struggling with. The mentor in fact acts as soundboard during thecounselling sessions which also enables the child toindependently seek and ultimately find solutions for theirissues.
