Well…there goes the 2019 school year. It has been quite busy at school, something that is often not seen as one drives past the grounds. Armed with our School Improvement Plan we have set about focussing on the goals contained in it. Literacy and Mathematics improvement, particularly at year 8, has meant that we have focussed on strengthening and then building on those skills students brought with them from primary school. Each student has extended their vocabulary, improved their reading, increased the complexity of their writing and honed their number skills. It is pleasing to report that in, amongst all the bad press of late, for many of our students the year has been successful and learning has moved forward, particularly for those students who have put in the effort and used the support from home and school. Thank you to the all the teaching, support and administration staff for your ongoing commitment to students and our school. Teachers have inspired our students, listened to them and nurtured them, and encouraged them always to reach their full potential. A teacher’s job is huge, it is ever changing, it is dynamic and most of the time it can be thankless. I would like to acknowledge the team we have here at Bordertown for all they have provided for our community’s children this year. Some staff members are leaving us this year. We farewell Emily Moxon, who will take up a position at St Peters Girls and Nadeem Aftab, who moves to Hallett Cove High. I thank them for their efforts and willingness to work in a country school. I know that both have professionally gained a lot from working here. Sue Walter is taking some well-deserved leave in term 1, while staffing for 2020 is still work in progress. The Department has in place a 10-year plan to turn the South Australian Education System into a world class one. Two years into that and certainly here at Bordertown High School we are firmly committed to that aim. During 2020 staff will undertake training in areas such as curriculum delivery and beginning the process of skilling ourselves to manage the arrival of the year 7s in 2022. We are all hoping that work will begin on the new tennis courts during the holidays so the Grounds Committee can begin planning how we can best use the old courts area. Thank you all for your support of the school as a strong partnership between home and school is vital to student success. Have a safe and enjoyable summer break. Markus Trnovsky

Tatiara Art Prize In semester one the year nine art class was tasked with creating a work to enter into the Tatiara Art Prize -Landcare Unearthed Emerging Young Artist Prize. To create the works, students first picked a landscape artist to research. Students then chose a local landmark or feature in the Tatiara and painted it in the style of the artist chosen. The works were entered into the competition and exhibited at the Walkway Gallery, where the winners were announced during the Landcare Conference on Monday the 28th October. Congratulations to the winner Ruby Schwarz, inspired by Cinta Vidal, Runner up Meg Lowe, inspired by David Hockney, as well as the highly commended Mary Green, inspired by Antonio Lopez Garcia, and Abbie Croser, who gathered inspiration from John Olsen. Semester 2 has been very busy for the year 9 Science classes. They started by beginning a large STEM task that exposed them to new resources, stretched their imaginations and put them outside their comfort zones. The aim of the task was to make recycling exciting through the use of simple circuits. They used the engineering design process to create their final products which were displayed at the Bordertown Spring Festival. The final products were engaging and most incorporated LED strips and motion sensors that the general public could interact with. Students also completed a task in which they needed to develop a conservation programme for a local wildlife species that is threatened or vulnerable. Students had an opportunity to create a model to present with their programme, to further convince the reader that their programme was worth investing in. These programmes along with their models are displayed in the STEM centre. To end the term, the Maths and Science faculty conducted a day of activities where students participated in multiple STEM challenges. The first two sessions saw the students completing a ‘flat-pack’ activity where they needed to create a chair and table that could support the school made pets; Ginger and Spot. After lunch students had an opportunity to engage with the new Texas Instrument hubs and rovers, which require coding to move the robotic rover, whilst other students investigated Sierpinski fractals by building a tetrahedron Christmas tree.

Relay for Life On the 23rd and 24th November, a small group of students gave up a large part of their weekend to participate in the 2019 Relay for Life. Arniel Forrest, Josh Flaviano, Lara McLellan, Tahlia O’Sullivan, Amirul Shaibah, Kraig Fuentes, Will Krop and Maisie Hicks took it in turns walking laps of the Bordertown oval for nineteen hours alongside other members of the community, both young and old, and did so with enthusiasm and respect. Relay for Life was a very moving overnight experience which recognised and celebrated cancer survivors, patients and their carers, as well as honouring and remembering those who have passed. To date our community has raised more than $66,000. These funds will support many cancer sufferers and their families, and will hopefully help to save many lives in the future. It would be fantastic if we could increase the numbers of the Bordertown High School team when Relay for Life returns to Bordertown in 2021. Naomi Excell
VET News Automotive Industry Group South East Awards Congratulations to Josh Will who won the School Based Apprentice award at the AIGSE presentations in Mt Gambier last Tuesday evening, having already been successful in the same category in 2018. Agriculture In 2016 the Weckert family approached the school with an extraordinary offer to manage the Verco’s farm cropping program for three years. Three successful seasons have seen the Canola, Wheat and Oaten Hay yield well and with the Weckert family donating their services to sow, spray and harvest, the school has made a sizeable profit. In 2017, our Canola made $470 p/t, 2018 the Wheat $350 p/t and this year we hope to make $220 p/t for the Hay. After the seed and chemical expense, the school, over the three years expects to profit a total of around $100, 000. In addition to the actual crop production, Michael has met with students each year both on farm and in the classroom to discuss the plant growth, seasonal expectations, timing and application of fertilizer and chemical, expected yields and current market information. Students have gathered the information on the crop, recorded growth, tracked expenses, and predicted gross margins. We are now financially set to manage the cropping program at Verco’s through consultation with our Advisory Committee and the employment of local contractors. We are also looking to continue to improve our Agricultural program, with investment in some new technology and equipment for animal handling. Thank you to the Weckert family for such generous support, we appreciate your commitment to our school with many students on a path to a bright future in Agriculture. Kate McCarthy & Helen Altus

Normally, at this time of the year it is very difficult to find motivated students. With final exams complete and summer holidays approaching, most students are in “shut down” mode, not so at Bordertown High School. I have just spent 3 very productive days teaching Mathematics at a high level to some outstanding young people. That we were able to achieve as much as we did is a credit not only to the calibre of the students themselves but also to the outstanding ongoing work of Paul Trieu. Bordertown High School is indeed fortunate to have Paul to lead its Mathematics faculty.
To conclude the Year 8’s first year of High School, they experienced their first camp, staying one night at the Naracoorte Caves. In their two class groups they participated in a range of activities including Adventure Caving (crawling around in small spaces underground), a tour of the Wonambi Fossil Centre and the Victoria Fossil Cave, plus a visit to the Bat Cave at dusk to witness the bats flying out for their nightly feed. The students were required to pitch their own tent and cater for themselves while they were away. We were very fortunate with the weather, which was lucky for a few as the structure of some tents was questionable. The first group also over catered with no one going hungry with plenty of snags to share. The Adventure Caving experience through Stick-Tomato Cave and Blackberry Cave was a highlight for many students, with many unable to pick their favourite as they both are quite unique and offer different experiences and challenges. It was great to see students pushed out of their comfort zones, feeling a sense of success or just relieved for their achievement. A huge thank you to the staff that attended Greg Ralph, Lauren Kirk and Paul Trieu. These camps aren’t possible without your help and the students certainly enjoy this opportunity. Also a big thankyou to Huk Scown for transporting the students on the bus through the week. Jordan Searle PE Teacher

Having spent more than 50 years in education, the time and quality of a school becomes something in which is easy to gauge. The fact that these indications at Bordertown High School are very healthy is a credit to the Principal Markus Trnovsky, the staff and the wider community. It was an absolute pleasure to spend time here and I look forward to an ongoing association. Bill Jerram Member of the Mathematical Association of South Australia
