All the required paperwork has been completed and the final start up meeting will be held within the next two weeks. Despite indications that the project would start this year DECD has indicated the most likely start will be the beginning of 2018 and finishing before the end of the year. The school would expect to take over the upgraded buildings by the end of 2018 ready for occupation from the beginning of 2019. STEM pedagogy covers enquiry, project and problem based learning and can be used across all subject areas, not just those of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as indicated in the acronym. The school has recently purchased ipads for introducing some STEM pedagogy and already some work is being done in the science and mathematics faculties. There is much support from DECD and private providers to help schools embed this pedagogy as part of 21C learning and allow schools to make the best use of the new facilities. After School Work There are many opportunities locally for our students to have paid casual employment after school. The money is used to pay for a variety of things, including cars, mobiles, university and clothes. Working instils a work ethic and teaches students the value of money, but the amount of employment needs to be appropriate for the child. There are numerous studies around the world stating that nine hours per week of paid employment is the maximum for a student completing full time study. A few of our students are working far more than nine hours a week and it is impacting on their studies. When counselled students often indicate that they need the money, but when pressed further it usually refers to what could be regarded as non-essential items. Parents have a large role to play to ensure students are not working too much and jeopardising their education. Pressure will come from students as money provides a level of independence. Making work a priority instead of completing school tasks can impact on the ability of students to be successful and if in Year 12 may result in limited employment or study options for the following year. The effect on a child of paid employment will vary, therefore monitoring by parents of student performance at school and well-being generally is very important. Year 12 Exams Last Monday the Year 12 Exams were completed, bringing to a close the academic commitment of students for this year. I trust they receive the grade they deserve. A number of students have worked very effectively throughout the year and achieved at a consistently high level, therefore I am confident that the results will again reflect positively on students and staff at the school. D2C House marketing The second Doorways to Construction house is available for purchase and is being marketed by Malcolm Hautop through local agency SAL. Inspection can be arranged through the agent. Even though the house has the same design as the first one there have been some additional features included, adding to the appeal. Principal 2018 I have stated previously that I will be leaving the school at the end of this year and I know parents, staff and students are keen to know the person replacing me. The Principal selection panel has concluded their deliberations and I have been informed that no suitable applicant applied for the Principal position, therefore there will now be an acting Principal in place for Term 1, during which time the position will be re- advertised. Markus Trnovsky has been appointed as acting Principal during this period. Markus brings a wealth of experience at the school to the position and I have every confidence in his ability to continue the improvement agenda of the school. Reports The final reports will be distributed on the last day of term and will be available to attending students in a home group at the end of the day or to other students and parents after 2.30pm. Ag News Year 9s have just finished their pig projects, where they have been learning about housing, feeding, management, marketing and finances. The detail in some of these projects is amazing. They will now be learning how to do some junior judging on fleeces, grain and merino sheep ready for the Mundulla show next year, if there is sufficient time remaining. Year 10s are finishing up their wool topic. They have been learning about the qualities and properties of wool, how to assess wool on the sheeps back. We were fortunate to have Steph-Brooker Jones, is an Elders wool buyer from Naracoorte, speak to the students about the marketing of wool, how to read market reports and how to classify and skirt wool. She was extremely informative and the students asked some great questions. VERCO’S FARM: Many things have been happening at the school farm, with the canola nearly ready to be harvested and is looking good. Michael Weckert and his merry men have been working with students and the school all year on the production of our canola crops. Michael has been so valuable to us this year and we can not thank him enough for his time and expertise. We have 41 crossbred lambs off to JBS on Monday and a few lighter ones will head to the Naracoorte markets Tuesday. 75 merino lambs will be shorn and have a holiday at Sue and Don Walters over the Christmas break and the 110 merino and cross bred ewes will be classed next week. The older ones are off to market, and the others ready for mating mid-December. Shearing will be happening at Phil Salmons on Friday with a team of 5 students helping. A big thankyou to Jeff Guy for helping organise this. CHOOKS: Still some chooks are left for sale. Would love to clear these out before holidays. They are all laying and waiting their new homes. Please call Tash in the front office 87521455 to organise payment and pick up. Helen Altus

Our Year 10 students participated in the Road Awareness Program (RAP) last week, with the session presented by the Metropolitan Fire Service, supported by RAA, Motor Accident Commission, Adelaide BMW and the Australian Professional Firefighters Foundation. A sincere thank you to Bradley Ryan and Lachlan Miller for sharing the strong message about the consequences of poor decision making, and our students were quite moved by the graphic presentation. At the conclusion of the presentation, students completed evaluation forms, which have been developed to help identify changes in attitude that can lead to changes in behaviours in students as road users. Students nominated on the evaluation form what type of driver/road user they were prior to the RAP presentation then indicated the type of driver/road user they intend to be moving forward after the presentation. Feedback from this survey provided to the school showed that of our group of 51 students, 42 students nominated that they were RISK TAKERS as drivers/road users prior to seeing RAP. 50 students checked the box indicating they choose to be a RESPONSIBLE DRIVER/ROAD USER after participating in the RAP presentation. In response to the question, "Following the program will you adopt safer road behaviours? "51 out of 51 students said yes, which is an excellent result. Brad commended the behaviour and response from our students, which is most pleasing to hear. A small sample of student comments has been included below. This program will hopefully assist our year 10 students in learning to be sensible road users with good attitudes, making smart decisions and understanding that safe behaviour on the road is their responsibility.

RAP PROGRAM

Well done to the Year 11 geography students who completed their fundraising efforts this week by cleaning the recycling crates for Mrs Blackwell. They have worked hard to raise the funds to pay for their Yr 11 Foster Child in Nepal, through (Plan International, and also 2 scholarships for students in the Philippines through AFFLIP . A great volunteering effort! Sue Walter

YEAR 11 GEOGRAPHY FOSTER CHILD

Great presentation, really opened my eyes! Awesome guest speaker and very inspirational” “I am so thankful for this program as I am learning to drive and I will never partake in risky behaviour” “This program has really made me realise the consequences of poor decisions.” Ver confronting but I feel everyone needs to see and hear this. Thank you so much for coming and sharing your story as you have definitely changed my views on everything for the best.” “Awesome program – hard-hitting but effective!”

Remembrance Day

Asha McCarthy represented our School by attending the service at the Bordertown RSL. The day marked the laying of a wreath, prayers and a service to remember our fallen soldiers .

Year 9 Bushwalking/Rock climbing Camp

Perfect weather conditions were delivered for Year 9 camp during week 4 of this term. The students enjoyed the challenges of Rock climbing, Bushwalking, Camping, cooking for themselves and long drop toilets. The girls began the camp with a day of rock climbing at Mt Arapiles. They all showed enthusiasm and pushed themselves to try different climbs. Luckily Eliza is like a cat and managed to land on her feet as some other students day dreamed in the warm conditions. The boys had a more leisurely day visiting Mackenzie Falls and exploring the nearby creek, with only one student managing to slip into the icy water. The following day involved a 14.4km hike of Mt Rosea with all students making the entire journey and enjoying the magnificent views. They all returned to camp and quickly disappeared to the nearby creek to soak their weary feet. The final day meant the boys went to rock climbing and the girls visited Mackenzie Falls all enjoying the experiences. Well done to all the students that attended getting out of their comfort zone, trying something different, and enjoying the social interaction without modern technologies. A big thank you to the staff who attended as these camps cannot take place without their support.
