WINTER 2011 Now that you have all had your Christmas food and drink, and all the batteries in the toys have gone flat, a little bit of something to help ease you back into work. Hope you all have a Happy New year, and enjoy your motorsport in 2012. If you have any ideas of what you would like to see in this publication, please contact me – EDITOR. The club website is updated regularly; check it out for further information and news. Website www.bordermotorclub.co.uk Border Motor Club are also on CHAIRMAN’S CHAT A very Happy New Year to you all. I hope you all survived the Christmas festivities reasonably intact. We’ve still got bits of turkey and pudding in the fridge, and other festive bits in the freezer, so we probably won’t need to go to the supermarket until February, and my trousers will hopefully fit me properly again sometime around March. Nearly everybody gave me books as presents this year, which should keep me going for most of 2012; (especially the ones where you can colour in as well). I’m not going to suggest that you should all consider some very responsible New Year resolutions, as they tend to last until the hangovers have worn off and real life takes over again. However, having some goals for the forthcoming year might be something to think about. For example, I promise myself that I will not leave it until the last minute to sort out a car for this year’s Border Classic, (actually, this is a bit of a cheat, as I did bite the bullet and buy something in December; so I should really revise that promise to say I will get my MGB GT fully sorted and running to my satisfaction). Let’s go a little bit further and say that I will do at least one other event this year with it. Whatever you might intend to do or hope to do in 2012 I strongly suggest that you pay little attention to the doom and gloom peddled by the news media and their experts. They all missed forecasting the major crash in 2008, and if they got that wrong, then their opinions aren’t really worth a bag of wet mice (with apologies to Rich Hall). Whatever they say, life goes on, so get on and live it, because if you wait for the perfect opportunity to come round, it may never come at all. This is exactly the argument that someone used when discussing our event planned for this spring at Cadwell Park. As I’m sure most of you will know, we are in negotiations with MSV to once again use Cadwell Park for stage rallying, and hopefully recreate some of the great times of the old South Bank events of the past. The original date of Sunday 11 March is no longer available to us, but any replacement date will be around that time. When we do have a new date confirmed, then it will be all hands to the pump please. The promise of the event has already brought some old friends out of the woodwork with promises of help, but we will need every Border member to help on this one to ensure its success. Looks like 2012 will be a lot of fun after all.

A very Happy New Year to you all. I hope you all survived the Christmas festivities reasonably intact. We’ve still got bits of turkey and pudding in the fridge, and other festive bits in the freezer, so we probably won’t need to go to the supermarket until February, and my trousers will hopefully fit me properly again sometime around March. NEWS Memories of Alan Healy. (El Presidente) by Rick Judd. Alan was Border Motor Club’s president, and one of its founder members. His great enthusiasm in all he did in Motorsport had an influence on everybody who knew him. I first got to know him in 1978, and marshalled with him on the RAC rally of that year (won by Bjorn Waldegard,) in Finningley quarry. This was handy as it was just a few hundred yards from the clubhouse! It was obvious from the start that Alan’s business like approach, combined with a great sense of humour, made motorsport a fun day out. As well as his marshalling activities Alan was a keen competitor. He took part as a driver in both Road Rallies and Single Venue events. In the Late 70’s and early 80’s Alan, co driven by Alan Glover, was a regular on East Midland’s road rallies. At this time Alan had a couple of Rally Cars, a very nice Mk1 Escort Mexico, and a Fiat Mirafiori Sport. He managed to get Sponsorship from his employers Bell Watson Estate Agents and Alan and “Slippery Sid” as Alan Glover was nicknamed, had some good results, regularly finishing in the top five. A few years on, and Border Motor Club started organising Stage Rallies. Again Alan was at the forefront of the activities, and because of promotion at work, Bell Watson became firm Sponsors, which was invaluable, and gave Border a reputation for organising a good event. The Club organised a couple of Multi Venue Stage Rallies in the South Yorks/North Lincs area, and later ran a series of Single Venue events at various locations, including Bruntingthorpe airfield in Leicestershire, Lindholme, Hemswell and Hibaldstow airfields, and also Kirton quarry. Alan was always keen to try and raise funds for local charities, so the club donated some of the profits from these rallies to causes such as the Lincs/Notts Air Ambulance. Other highlights of Alan’s time as President included running the start or finish controls at the Clumber park stage on the RAC rally. The club was also involved with the running of the Dragonby (Scunthorpe Steelworks) stage on the RAC rally. Alan will be remembered by all at Border Motor Club, for his always cheerful attitude, and great organising skills. Richard Burns Ten years have passed since Richard Burns won his only World Rally Championship with Subaru, making him England’s only world rally champion to date; and sadly four years later to the day on November 25th he lost his long battle with a brain tumour. He will be remembered for his rivalry with Colin McRae, and for bringing a methodical, planned approach to rallying that many others have since copied. The Richard Burns Foundation was set up by some of his closest friends and colleagues as a lasting tribute to his memory. It aims to help people who are affected by serious illness or injury. See www.richardburnsfoundation.com for further details about Richard’s life and the work of the foundation. Andy Burton The legendary Peugeot Cosworth of Andy Burton / Robin Kellard, quite capable of beating modern WRC cars, will no longer be seen on British rally stages as the car is one of the victims of the new MSA 2012 stage rally car regulations. Engine problems meant they were not able to compete on a final outing, the Rally GB National, after winning this years BTRDA Gold Star Championship. There is a great video of the years highlights where you can enjoy the glorious sound this car makes on You Tube - www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh8w1zPte0w Stage Rally Championship results 2011 Mel Hudson first driver, with Paul Rhodes taking the co-drivers award.

MSA News

The MSA-commissioned Review of Stage Rallying has been published following its presentation to the Motor Sports Council. The review panel was tasked with understanding the problems and challenges facing this sport and proposing recommendations to address them where possible. Advice was sought from experienced specialists within specific areas of rallying, and the panel met five times which received representations from a number of guests during the year. In addition, the length and breadth of the country travelled and opinions sought from local clubs, event organisers, competitors and regional associations. The resulting 21-page report provides details of the Panel’s recommendations, analysis of licence and event statistics, and feedback from MSA Officials Seminars. It can be found of the MSA website.

The JLT MSA Club of the Year award went to Omagh Motor Club following its nomination by the Association of Northern Ireland Car Clubs. Midland Automobile Club was second with Kirkby Lonsdale Motor Club third.

Andrew Holley has been named 2011 JLT MSA Marshal of the Year, which rewards excellence among the 12,000-strong team of MSA-registered volunteer marshals, without whom motor sport could not take place, An award previously won by our very own Mark Johnson, in 2004, yes it was that long ago.

ALAN HEALY MEMORIAL CADWELL PARK STAGES

As the Chairman has mentioned the first date suggested by the organising committee is not available. Alternative dates of Saturday the 3rd or 10th March have been offered. One of these two would seem to be the best option as there would be conflicts with other events before and after, see calendar on last page. A meeting with the MSV representative at Cadwell has been planned; further details will be available as soon as possible.

30 years together and never a cross word spoken (Yeah right) - Mel Hudson/Roy Bell In 1981, on the 31st October we competed our first event together, the Spire Trophy Road Rally, finishing 29th overall, 5th in class in a Hillman Imp with a full 875cc under the bonnet, sorry that should be boot. Should have been higher, but followed a Chevette at a split, code board to left! Lesson learnt; always go your own way. The first stage event was the Opposite Lock in 1982 on Hemswell, which cost £21.00 to enter. Competed on 19 events upping engine to a full 998cc, until at end of 1983, the Imp was sold. The 1984 Cadwell Park Stages was the debut of a 1600 Escort MkI. After two engine blow ups (Dipstick wrong length for the car) came good on the 1985 Twyford Stages, 13th O/A, 1st in class. Used this car until near the end of 1989, with some top ten results and a couple of class awards. Replacement was a MKII 1600, and competed on our first forest events in 1992 with this car and also used proper tarmac ‘slick’ tyres for the first time, on the Bloodhound Stages at North Coates. When we came to a 90 right we had to accelerate to the corner, as had stopped somewhat short. Puzzled looks until we realised the tyres gave better braking as well as grip! Got a second in class with the help of these and they lasted for ages. Whilst 1992 was a good year, it was also a bad one, as the car ended its competition days stuffed up the back end of a Chevette at an icy Cadwell Park. 1994 saw the purchase of a MKII 2000, in which we had some great times. After hitting a telegraph pole whilst lying 4th O/A on the Kall Kwik, quote from Mel ‘All those live trees in there and I have to go hit a dead one.’ A year later on the same event, again snowy, we had what is still our best rally to date, 5th O/A, 1st in class, tying with Mark Higgins, but quicker on SS1. With good results in 1995 we finished 3rd O/A in the EMAMC multi-venue Championship, and the Pinto engine was fantastic, even with the oil pressure light on, finished the 1998 Cadwell Park stages, but to try and keep up with others in our class, a 16v red top was fitted. Going well first time out and 1st in class when fuel pumps packed up (Jack hit them!). Until engine problems were sorted had some great stages, but not many finishes, and when we got that fixed, luck went from bad to worse, as an accident on the 2002 Kall Kwik damaged the shell too badly to be used again. Mel wanted to try 4WD and so a Cosworth was the next car to be rallied; think some of you will remember our first event at Cadwell, as you had to replace a load of tyres as we quickly found the limits on SS1. On the next event, also at Cadwell, it was very snowy; SS1 was cancelled as cars couldn’t get round Barn from the hairpin. As we had standard brakes the wheels with knobblies fitted OK, unlike the tarmac special cars, so until the end of SS3, we were 1st O/A. I wanted to retire there and then as would be the only time it could have said ‘retired whilst leading’ Sadly it dried out and we finished 10th. After four more rallies we then had 8 non-finishes in a row, the last one writing off the shell, but the one that gutted us the most was on the Bloodhound Stages in 2005 with a dog box fitted for the first time. After SS1 was 6th O/A, but on SS2 it selected 2 gears at once, and jammed up. All the bits that were salvageable were used on another Cosworth for 2006, and with ‘the monkey off our back’ gave us a great years rallying, with our highest recorded finish of 2nd O/A at Twyford Wood, a place which seems to suit us. Eight finishes out of nine events gave us 3rd O/A in the ANEMMC Championship. 2007 was not as successful and the car was sold at the end of the year. The current car, a BMW E30 325i was bought in 2008, and has finished 27 out of 29 events so far. In 2009 we won the ANEMMC multi-use championship, with Roy 2nd O/A & Mel 1st in class in the multi-venue one, and Mel 2nd driver & Roy 1st in the EMAMC multi-use championship, despite the roll on the Rally Yorkshire, which must be the best year we have had to date. Loads more memories, but don’t want to bore you further. Many thanks to all who have serviced for us, marshalled on, or organised events to allow us to go out and enjoy our rallying over the past 30 years, and here’s to the next, well who knows how many years, but you can be sure they will be fun, with plenty of smiles per miles.

EVENT REPORTS

Premier Stages Rally, Clipstone Forest, nr Mansfield 20th November – Mel Hudson/Roy Bell (24th O/A, 4h in class.) John Martin/Neil Cahill 40th O/A 3rd in class) Mel Hudson/Roy Bell Two firsts on the Premier this year, the rally ran as a single venues, with 3 different stages twice each in Clipstone North (Forest Pines to some,) and first time out in the forests since the accident on the Rally Yorkshire in 2009 for us, not by choice, but this one was too good to miss. Very rusty on the first stage, was going a lot better on SS2 until after a 90 right Mel noticed a big cut out on the LHS bank, so to make sure he didn’t hit it, and roll, threw the car the other way, which unsettled it, and put us off stage further down. Had to be pushed out, and then stalled and wouldn’t restart, so lost a lot of time there, and lost 3rd in class. Changed from 15” to 14” tyres for SS3 to compare, and found them a lot better, so stopped on them for the rest of the day, which helped as the stages cut up and rutted as usual, but this was made better by using some parts only twice. The only real problem was on the last two, when had to go straight on over a part that had been used as a 90 left in the opposite direction previously, and on the last stage think a front arm got bent, as steering a bit wayward after that. Lot of fog on the way down, but luckily didn’t suffer from this on the stages, A compact event, which was well received by the competitors and spectators alike so the organising team hope to be back next year with an improved event, and if they can secure the closure of a small section of tarmac, may be able to use Clipstone South, to offer greater variation.

MEL HUDSON/ROY BELL – Premier Rally Thanks to Jon Lyon for these Photographs.

At this corner on SS1, Ian Bass navigating for Phil Pickard told him Donovan (Jenkins) normally takes it flat, not realising it was 90 left over the crest. No wonder they had loads of hazard tape on the car at the finish of the stage!

Tamdown Snetterton Stages Rally, Snetterton 20th November – Blair Bushby/Paul Rhodes (23rd O/A, 2nd in class.) Paul Moran/Ade Woodcock (24th O/A, 9th in Class.)

The first rally to use Snetterton since 2003 and in that time the new owners Motorsports Vision have been through a complete renovation programme, including a new 3 mile circuit, the’300’, which was fully utilised by the organising club. Eight stages were held using various configurations of the layout, including using it in the opposite way to how it is run for circuit racing.

Two Border crews journeyed down for the event, scrutineering on Saturday night. Next day the start was delayed by two hours as thick fog made visibility very poor, as can been seen in the two photographs. On SS4 Blair/Paul took a maximum with electrical problems, which dropped them down from 9th O/A, 3rd in class to 39th O/A, 9th in class. The crew climbed back to up, and with a surprisingly low 4WD entry, plus retirements, still took second in class.

Hall Trophy Stages, Blyton Park 26th November (Clitheroe & DMC/ Border MC 1st O/A, 1st class.) This rally was a re-introduction into organising side of an event for some of the club’s members, with others helping with setting up or marshalling, or doing all three. There was good turnout for setting up on Friday, with the majority of the work carried out. Very easy to offload 400 cones, but a lot harder to thin them out and put back on the trailer again as you realise more required at other locations. Alterations were made as quick as possible by erecting the arrows with screws/washers, instead of staples, and so could turned 180 deg and spun to any angle required ………..seeeemples. Split boards had to be made at short notice, but generally everything else went smoothly. Some work to finish off on a cold windy Saturday morning, but then it was time for the first car away. Great teamwork by the turn round team kept delays to a minimum, and ensured a reasonable finish time for the rally, but the day was still not over, as volunteers cleared up the stages where possible, and collected the cones back in again. At 7kg apiece they soon become heavy when you have been at it all day, so picking two up, becomes one. The list of minor things to do seemed to go on forever, stripping down arrows, de-stapling other boards, collecting fire extinguishers, putting start/finish boards into sets, bundling up stakes, but with the back broken on Saturday night, and the newly acquired trailer loaded to the gunnels, (Gunnels, variant of gunwale; The top of the side of a boat or the topmost plank of a wooden vessel – Useless bit of info for you there – Ed,) only required a couple of hours on Sunday morning, and everything was done. As most of the readers of this magazine were involved in some way or another, they will appreciate how much work went into this event to make it the success it was, and judging by the comments on the day and posted on the British rally forum, it was well received by those who were there. Blair reckoned that Blyton would fit into one corner of Swinderby, so you can imagine what it was like setting that venue up.
