Since the time of the Romans the noblegrape has been worshipped in theBordeaux region and today there are noother places which are so obviouslyassociated with quality wine. This issomething which influences a large part ofeveryday life. Every street in the city isthronged with wine merchants and thewine chateaux, of which there are over100, offer their visitors tastings. Winetherapy, a spa with grape extract, is saidto be beneficial for the body and is offeredat several of the hotels. The beautifulbaroque buildings which were once erectedin the city centre to conceal the slumsmake a great display. Today Bordeaux is amodern city with historic charm, amongother things it has what is perhaps thenewest-looking trams Europe can offer. Awalk along the River Garonne, or along thecity’s pedestrianised streets and squares, constantly provides fresh discoveries. Inthe ”golden triangle”, where the mostimportant shopping streets cross eachother, an abundance of opportunities areon offer to taste the region’s cuisine, orjust to have a coffee after bargain-huntingin the shops.
