ABOUT US

Since 1978, Fayette Senior Services, Inc., (FSS) an independent, non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, has been providing a wide array of life -en-riching services to Fayette County residents age 50 and better. Fayette County, Georgia, is home to one of the fastest growing senior populations in metro Atlanta – and the age 60+ population segment is projected to grow an astonishing 450% by 2040. This statistic alone makes our mission — to make a meaningful difference in the emotional, social, and physical well-being of older adults — all the more critical. By fostering independence, improving quality of life, and enhancing the community connection, the programs and services we provide are an essential part of our community.

Not-for-profit FSS enjoys a unique public/private partnership with Fay-ette County government. Through this agreement we provide a variety of supportive services such as Meals On Wheels, Transportation, In-home Personal Care/ Homemaker Services, Care Management, Information As-sistance, and more. We could not do that without our government partners; however, we believe it is our responsibility to complement the public sup-port to ensure we can continue serving Fayette’s seniors for generations to come. Therefore, we feel it’s important to note that less than half of our revenue comes from sources other than federal, state, and local govern-ments.

Fayette Senior Services is recognized as a model of sustainability and social entrepreneurship among peer organizations and nongovernment funders. Although we are proud of this recognition, we could not do all that we do without the support from charitable donors, Center members, volunteers, grantees, and the community that so generously supports our fundraising efforts.

The aging transition can be paved with a broad spectrum of challenges. However, it can also prove to be rich with opportunities. The key to “ag-ing well” is knowledge. When it comes to addressing those unique needs, Fayette Senior Services Life Enrichment Center is the one-stop shop for empowering older adults to live well and age well.

Our Life Enrichment Center in Fayetteville is uniquely different from tra-ditional senior centers. Our beautiful facility is a vibrant place where adults age 50+ come to socialize with friends, enjoy a great meal in our Ultimate café, re-energize their bodies, exercise their minds, and lift their spirits.

To make sure our programs and activities are within easy reach to more seniors, we are proud to have established a community partnership with the city of Peachtree City. We now offer many new programs and activities in Peachtree City at the Gathering Place (next to “The Fred” Amphitheater) and at our newest facility, McIntosh Place. We’re adding new classes and activities each month during our expansion to PTC, so stay tuned for more!

We are proud to be making life better in our community. The Fayette Senior Services Staff

When You Need a Little Help From Some Friends...We offer supportive services that make a meaningful difference in the emotional, social, and physical well- being of older adults by preserving their indepen-dence, improving their quality of life, and connecting them to the community.

Meals On WheelsMeals on Wheels is a needs-based program for

homebound, or semi-homebound, seniors who are unable to provide themselves with regular nutritious meals due to physical or financial challenges. The service also connects homebound seniors to the com-munity through daily social contact, which also helps to ensure their well-being.

Ani-Meals To many homebound seniors, having a pet is a

source of companionship and comfort. The AniMe-als™ program is designed to give our Meals On Wheels clients a little help with the cost of pet food to make sure that maintaining that important bond isn’t an added burden.

STAR Program (Seniors Together After Retirement)

Our STAR program (Seniors Together After Retire-ment) offers individuals 60 and older an opportunity to come together for socialization, recreational activities, health and wellness classes, and a nutritious meal in our Ultimate Cafe. Transportation to and from the Center may also be available to eligible participants.

Transportation For older adults who no longer drive, getting to es-

sential medical appointments, to the pharmacy, to church, or to the grocery store can be a challenge, putting their health and well-being at risk. We provide safe and affordable door-to-door transportation op-tions. Wheelchair assistance available.

Information & Assistance Our certified Information & Assistance Specialists

are the gateway to connecting older adults with the right community resources or providing information to address their specific needs.

In-Home Personal Care/Homemaker Services This service enables older adults to remain living

independently by providing compassionate care from trained personnel who perform simple homemaker and/or personal care tasks, such as light housekeep-ing or assistance with bathing. Delivered with the utmost personal respect and dignity, our services can also bring much needed respite to caregivers.

Care Management Our professional staff of social workers helps older

adults make informed decisions to enhance indepen-dent living and quality of life. Our Care Managers offer consultations, assessments, and follow-up to assist individuals and families in planning and care. We also provide invaluable support to caregivers.

Adult Day Care We contract with a trusted and licensed local pro-

vider of adult daycare services that offers a caring environment focused on the individual’s physical and emotional well-being, as well as social and recre-ational activities. Transportation is available.

Medical Equipment Lending We lend gently-used medical equipment to individu-

als, families, and caregivers. Equipment is loaned on a first-come first served basis.

Home Repair Services Our Tool Team helps older adults who are either

physically and/or financially unable to perform minor, routine home maintenance tasks and repairs. The Tool Team also specializes in disability additions, such as grab bars.

Eligibility requirements apply for some programs. Some services may be provided free of charge (tax deductible donations wel-come) or based on a sliding scale of income. Contact us at 770-461-0813 for more information.

Question: I recently purchased a step counter tracking device. The instructions say I should be doing at least 10,000 steps per day and I find that very difficult to do. Is this realistic?

Answer: Congratulations on your new purchase and taking another step towards reaching your fitness goals! A step counter is one of the easiest ways to increase your physical activity. Though 10,000 steps may seem unattainable, this is actually a very real-istic goal. The key to reaching it is to gradually in-crease your steps each day. If you currently average 3,000 steps per day, do not try to wake up the next day expecting to complete 10,000. That is what’s unrealistic. Now that you’re focused on increasing your steps and movement, you’ll find that you make better choices geared towards increasing your physi-cal activity like parking further away, taking the dog for longer walks or walking to short distance destina-tions instead of driving. Before you know it, you will be in competition with yourself and will not only have reached your goal, but exceeded it and seeking your next challenge.

Volunteer Spotlight There is nothing stronger than the heart of front desk volunteer Susan Klar!

It is often said that volunteering is a work of ‘heart’ and it is no secret that Fayette Senior Services’ volunteers are full of heart for our organization and the people we serve! Susan Klar, front desk volunteer, especially has a strong heart when it comes to serving others. If you have ever been by the front desk in Fayetteville, I’m sure you have seen a glowing smile and a warm hello coming your way from Susan. A unique individual with the most exuberant personality, Susan can make friends with just about everyone and is always quick to lend a helping hand when needed.

Susan has been a resident of Fayette County for 25 years and a member of Fayette Senior Services since 2013. She has been volunteering with the center since August of 2015 and has enjoyed every minute of it, and so have we! You can find her at the front desk in Fayetteville on Wednesday’s, always dressed sharply in her fashionista ways, full of bright and cheery colors to go along with her exciting personality. Susan shares that her favorite thing about volunteering with FSS is there is never a dull moment. “There is always something going on and the thing I enjoy most is helping people. Volunteering here also keeps me well-rounded and sharp!” says Susan. She began volunteering to meet people, give back to the community, and socialize! Susan has certainly obtained her goals and has exceeded expectations with her positive attitude and

wonderful customer service.

Born in sunny Tampa, FL, where she calls home, Susan grew up with her brother Bill and sister Barbara where they frequented Busch Gardens, Lowry Park Zoo, drive-ins and of course the beach! No wonder she calls this fun town home, with so many exciting and interesting things to do in beautiful Florida weather. After graduating, Susan worked with 1st National Bank of Tampa, Eastern Airlines and later Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, where she retired in 2013. She met her husband Larry on a blind date in Atlanta and both immediately knew it was meant to be. They were married at the beautiful Heavenly Valley Mountain in Lake Tahoe at what we can only imagine to have a wonderful and gorgeous wedding backdrop. They were married for 16 years before Larry passed away. They have a daughter, Megan, who lives close by in Fayette County. Susan plans on ‘retiring’ to Tampa soon and we can only hope we can hold this off as long as possible so we can keep her around.

It comes as no surprise to all of us Southerners when Susan excitedly shared that her passion is college football! So many of us live for Saturday’s in the fall when college football season is among us. Although, she is a true fan of the sport, we may have some rivalries between our beloved SEC conference and her treasured Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Ohio State Buckeyes. Her daughter, a recent graduate of Ohio State, has had Susan cheering on the Buckeyes on Saturdays, but her true loyalty holds strong to The Fighting Irish and she loves traveling to watch them play. Her other hobbies include reading, especially John Grisham books, traveling, where the most interesting place she’s visited is Poland, as well as dining out and cooking at home!

Susan is a pleasure to have on our volunteer team, and she makes such a difference in the lives of those she interacts with! Her smile and excitement is contagious and can turn anyone’s day around. Stop by the front desk next time you are in on a Wednesday to meet Susan, we promise you won’t regret it.

It is important to bring your spouse or a family member to your hearing screening.

Call toll-free to schedule your appointment!

866-200-6831

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that 48 million Americans are suffering from hearing loss in at least one ear and 30 million have hearing loss in both ears.

Hearing loss can have an impact on a variety of chronic diseases, such as moderate kidney disease, arthritis and diabetes. It impacts a person socially, psychologically and cognitively.

Getting regularly scheduled hearing screenings is as important as getting a physical or dental checkup. Having

a baseline hearing screening and maintaining an audiologic history makes it easier to assess your hearing, determine when you may be a candidate for hearing aids and choose the best hearing device solution for your budget and lifestyle.

May Is Better Hearing Month. This is a great time to think about your overall wellness, including your hearing. Hearing loss can have a profound influence on your health, relationships and quality of life.Join us this week to learn about ear

health and the potential impact hearing loss may have on your overall quality of life.

Now through June 30, we’ll be offering:• FREE No-obligation hearing screening
