Principal’s Report
Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day
Despite the fog, we had a great turnout of grandparents
and special friends who came into the school on Monday
and joined in activities in the classrooms. The Primary
staff welcomed all visitors and the Parents’ Club provided
morning tea for guests. Many thanks to the staff for their
organisation of this event and to the Parents’ Club for the
help with morning tea.
Staff Leave
The first week of Term 3 will see Mr Bleicher taking a
week of Long Service Leave. We wish him a very restful
and well-deserved break.
VET Taster Day
This Friday the Year 9 students will be visiting the Trade
Training Centre in Charlton to look into Vocational Education and Training Courses that are
available for them to start next year. This is a great opportunity to discuss career pathways and
make some preliminary decisions about subject choices for 2020.
Work Experience
Next week all Year 11 and some Year 10 students will be attending work experience in Melbourne
or around other local townships. The range of jobs they have chosen is wide and will be a huge help
to them in determining future career pathways. Mrs Moresi and Mr Crilly have put a lot of time into
organising this trip and the placements. Mrs Moresi, Ms Pickering, Mrs Coutts and Mr Nickless are
accompanying the students to Melbourne. Those Year 10 students not doing work experience will
be on the ski camp to Bogong, accompanied by Mr Rowley and Miss Hogan. Many thanks to the
staff who have organised these trips and have volunteered to supervise the students while away.

VCAL Excursion On May 31st, 7 of the VCAL students got the opportunity to head down to Melbourne as part of our Maths
subject. Before the trip, we investigated how to travel around on public transport, what routes to take to our
venues and how to access timetables of trains and trams. Throughout the day, we got to experience public
transport and the city. We explored the South Melbourne Market, went on a tour of the MCG and looked
through the National Sports Museum. It was a great experience to be allowed to attend this trip.
Some comments from the students who attended the trip:
My favourite part of the Melbourne excursion was the Chinese food place where I got my lunch. I had noodles
and sweet and sour chicken and pork.
-Matt
Last week, we all went to Melbourne for a trip involving maths. We went to the South Melbourne Market for
lunch and a little bit of shopping. My favourite part of the South Melbourne Market was the food and trying
new things like a crème brulee doughnut. Then we went to the MCG for a tour and to learn about the history,
like Melbourne and Geelong being the first AFL teams, both founded in 1859, then visited the National Sports
Museum, that was my favourite part of the whole experience. Later we went back to Southern Cross Station
for tea, and then we went home on the train for what felt like the longest train ride of my life, without my
phone being charged. That was a bit low point for me. Overall, it was a fun experience being able to walk
around Melbourne and the teachers follow us this time, and I hope we can do it again sometime.
-Raiden
For me? The best part of the trip was possibly the food… I LOVED the food- The smell of the
South Melbourne Market filled my nostrils with each exotic smell in each stall. Ah, I wish to
return to such place, determined to enjoy the food splendidly.
-Andrew.
My favourite part was dinner when I had some good pizza, it was a margarita. I learned that the South
Melbourne Market existed but it was kind of boring. The Vic Market is way better.
-Connor
It was a very long day for so few activities, and it wasn’t quite what I expected. The best part was the food at
the South Melbourne Market.
-Emma
It was a good experience going to the South Melbourne Market for the first time and trying new things. My
favourite part was going to the MCG. It was also good to learn more about travelling around Melbourne.

Gateways in the Ovens Valley
Two weeks ago, the Gateways class and Mrs Gould, travelled to the Ovens
Valley to visit some businesses that operate in very different conditions from
what we have here in the Mallee. Students discovered the fire management
operations centre at the Ovens DELWP office, the Hancock Plantation pine
logging operation together with drone monitoring, the Wandiful chestnut and
Hazelnut biodynamic farm and the Red Stag Deer and Emu Farm. We thank
all of these groups for their time and expertise. Ardern’s Caravan Park in
Myrtleford were handy to stay at and the students enjoyed Pizza at the Roma
Pizza, gatecrashing the Myrtleford Football Club’s team selection.
Graincorp Opportunities for Gateways Students
The Boort Graincorp Site Manager, Clint Miller, led the gateways students around the Boort site and up into
the elevator. He explained the sampling work that is done, how the grain is transported and the way in
which OHS is followed at the site. He also gave students a good insight into career options at Graincorp,
including casual harvest work.
Work Placement Visits
Fletch Last has been undertaking an Engineering VET course at Charlton NCTTC this year. As part of this
course, Fletch has had a work placement with Russell Mountjoy at Bears Lagoon. Fletch has been
completing a range of engineering, automotive and agriculture work. Connor
Leersen has this year started a Building and Construction VET course. His
work placement has been with George Tallis Home Hardware. We thanks
both Russell and George for their time and care in taking on our Work
Placement students.
Year 8 and 9 Poetry
The city tastes like pollution and sweat on a hot day
The country tastes like a breath of fresh air in the month of May.
The city feels like a cold, dark prison.
The country feels like a home on Christmas Day.
The city feels like a multicultural crowd with different food and faces.
The country feels like an open green spaces and familiar faces.
An angry mob of sheep hurrying to places.
The sweet sound of birds chatter and the trees wave in the wind.
Gas and smoke will seep through the air like honey.
The smell of dirt hangs in the air like a shirt on a clothesline.
By Grace and Akaisha
Summer and winter
The dry, brown land stretching as far as I can see,
With a shimmering horizon and the sun beating down on
me.
Sausages on the barbie, splashing in the pool,
Next doors faint music as they try to keep cool.
The heat drying my mouth and sunburn on my skin,
The sound of loud cheering at my brother’s cricket win.
But then the air turns fresh, crisp and very, very cold,
The trees start swaying, and parents are getting old.
The snow is a blanket of white, laid across the town,
Freezing little toes as we fight and play around.
Thunder booms and lightning flashes, as rain pours
down,
Rushing inside, dripping wet, to see Mum with a frown.
Summer and winter, the seasons all year round,
I love every season, every day of every year.
Phoebe and Emma
The Country
Open, dirt and stillness
In the fresh soil, we find
fulfilment
In a world of pollution
People like us find a
solution
Farming might be hard
Cold days in the mud
Dirt and dust
In a 4x4 going fast

Country V City The country is as quiet as a mouse, The city is like a creaking door. Country air is clean and crisp, The city’s rotten like an apple core. In the country you have room to move, The city is a tight squeeze. The country is very welcoming, Get me out of the city please! Braedon
