Board Minutes – April 2015

The Boone County HCE board met on April 16, 2015 at the Extension Office. President Jo Ann Wienrank called the meeting to order with the pledge to the flag at 1:33 pm. Six units were represented: Cheery O’s (2), Pop Overs (3), Sunrisers (1), Farmerettes (1), DomestiKates (1) and Manchester (1). Reading of the Minutes: No changes noted to the minutes, they will be placed on file. Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer’s report given, and placed on file for audit. President: We will receive our new packets from District 2/3 Director Angela Hicks, when she comes to install our officers at the annual meeting. 1st Vice President: Mary Johnson asked if there are any ideas on lessons for the 2015-2016 year to please see that either she or the new 1st Vice President gets them. 2nd Vice President: 109 members Jerry Sanders from the Cheery O’s Unit has passed. BDO Council Report: See attached Community Outreach: On March 28th a Project Linus Make –A- Blanket Day was held and was a great success with 36 students traveling from Minnesota schools of Gustavus Adolphus College and the University of St. Thomas. These students made 99 blankets. The blankets will be used for kids in hospitals and in need in our area though Project Linus.

Jo Ann informed us about a program Quilts of Compassion Disaster (see the article in the newsletter).

International Night: Pam noted that there was a change in the date from Monday, October 26th to the tentative date of Tuesday, October 27th. She is waiting for the final confirmation from the church. Pam said that the committee had some get ideas and surprises. They are looking for donations to the “Chinese Auction”. Anyone who would like to make a donation please contact Pam Oberholtzer. Next planning meeting July 8th at 10 A.M. at the Extension office. Annual Meeting: The event will be May 28, 2015 at First Baptist Church. The speaker Jullia Furman, Doll Collector. Jo Ann W. had tickets with the representatives taking them back to their units. It is asked that all secretaries have their unit’s annual reports (summary of your year) turned in by May 8th. CVU: Keep track of all your hours. Ways & Means: The unit’s response concerning fundraiser ideas was they wanted to sell Butter Braids and cookie dough. The planned selling schedule stands as forms will be available in September will forms being due by October 21st and delivery November 9th. Pat Daniel and Diane Larsen wanted to thank all on the Ways and Means Committee and those who attended the meeting. Audit and Budget Committee: Pat Halverson informed us the audit went well. The new budget was completed. There were some changes in the budget from last year such as only giving $500 to the U of I. The new budget will be in the annual meeting booklet. Scholarship Committee: Two scholarships were awarded to qualified applicants. The students are from North Boone and Belvidere North.

Nominating Committee: Nominations are needed for the offices of: President, 2nd Vice President, and Treasurer. All members are encourage come to the annual meeting and vote. The past and newly elected officers will attend the June meeting together. With no further business, the meeting was closed at 2:28 P.M. with the Homemaker Creed. News from Our Units POP-OVERS UNIT

Jean Olsen was quite busy as our hostess,

local leader, and made a wonder rhubarb cake.

Members bought their tickets for our annual

meeting. We discussed what we were going to do

as our centerpiece. This discussion lead to some

doll memories one member told of the doll that had

been in her family for over 150 years.

We discussed the possible new items for

fundraisers. Judy Noe will tell our decision to the

ways and means committee. Jean gave the lesson.

Manchester Unit

MANCHESTER UNIT Submitted by Dolores Goeddeke

May meeting place for Manchester Unit has

been changed. It will be at Laura Lengjak’s home

on May 20th, 2015 at 1:00 PM.

PROJECT LINUS MAKE-A-BLANKET DAY

At the Flora Grange 36 students from Gustavus Adolphus College

and the University of St. Thomas.

These students made 99 blankets. The

blankets will be used for kids in hospitals and in need in our area though Project Linus.

QUILTS of COMPASSION from Quilter’s General Store

Quilts of Compassion Disaster Response Team, asked Quilter’s General Store to be a collecting location for this organization. We would like to assist them in making, collecting donations, and distributing quilts to those in our immediate area who have been affected by the recent tornadoes. They are in the process of collecting quilts that will be distributed in early May to those in the Fairdale and Rochelle areas. We are putting out the call to all of you to help this wonderful effort. We are accepting quilts of ALL sizes, quilted or tied, any pattern...for men, women and children. The biggest need at this time is for MEN and WOMEN!!! If you enjoy crocheting or knitting, we can use afghans of all sizes too!!! All quilts or afghans must be in excellent condition. All quilts that are donated are delivered DIRECTLY by our Disaster Response Team to those that have had loss that directly resulted from the tornado. Quilts of Compassion was started in 1999 by a young woman, who was the recipient of a quilt at a time of personal need, as a way to reach out to others in need. With their mission of giving hope and encouragement to those that are hurting, the Quilts of Compassion ministry works with volunteers from local churches and community organizations to gather fabric, make quilts and deliver quilts. In doing this, it has brought encouragement and hope to the hurting, but also has taught volunteers about the joy of giving.

Leaks Can Run, but They Can’t Hide! From Pearson Plumbing Newsletter Did you know that the average household's leaks account for more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year? That’s the amount of water needed to wash 270 loads of laundry! What a waste of resources? Here are some valuable tips from WaterSense, an EPA Partnership, to help save a precious resource – water! Common types of leaks found in the home are worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets, and other

leaking valves. These types of leaks are often easily correctable, requiring only a few tools and hardware that can pay for themselves in water savings. To check for leaks in your home, you first need to determine whether you're wasting water. Then identify the source of the leak.

Take a look at your water usage during a colder month, such as February or March. If a family of four exceeds 12,000 gallons per month, there are serious leaks.

Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter changes at all, you probably have a leak.

Identify toilet leaks by placing a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If any color shows up in the bowl after 15 minutes, you have a leak. (Be sure to flush immediately after the experiment to avoid staining the tank.)

Boone-DeKalb-Ogle Extension Council Report

Lisa Hepker has been selected as our new Extension Educator, 4-H Youth Development. Lisa will join

current 4-H Youth Development Educator, Johnna Jennings, for Unit 2. Johnna’s focus will continue to

be on 4-H clubs, 4-H leaders, the Latino pilot, teen leadership and MORE. Whereas, Lisa’s new role

will focus more on priority issues for youth education, developing partnerships for youth development,

and working with other youth serving organizations.

Program Coordinator Positions – vacancies in DeKalb County and Ogle County

Commercial Ag Educator Positions (shared with other counties) – interviewing candidates.

The Governor’s budget will possibly affect Extension funding. There is no concrete information at this

time. The most important thing Extension supporters can do is take every opportunity to make people

(including legislators) aware of the positive impact Extension has made in your life.
