Air Lease Corporation places two new Airbus A320-200s with Frontier Airlines

Air Lease Corporation announced long-term lease agreements with Frontier Airlines, an ultra-low-cost carrier based in the United States, for two new Airbus A320-200s. These aircraft are from ALC’s order book with Airbus and will be delivered in the second and third quarters of 2016.

CFM delivers first LEAP-1C to COMAC

CFM International and Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) celebrated delivery of the first CFM LEAP-1C engine to the aircraft manufacturer. This engine will be installed on the first C919 airplane in prepa-ration for airplane rollout and first flight. The LEAP engine was officially launched in December 2009 when COMAC selected the LEAP-1C as the sole Western powerplant for its 150-passenger C919 airplane. The engine incorporates a unique, industry-first fully inte-

grated propulsion system (IPS). CFM provides the engine as well as the nacelle and thrust reverser developed by Nexcelle*. These ele-ments, including the pylon provided by CO-MAC, were designed in conjunction with each other, resulting in a total system that provides improved aerodynamics, lower weight, and easier maintenance. The first LEAP-1C engine successfully completed a flight test program in late 2014 on a modified 747 flying testbed at GE facilities in Victorville, California. The first C919 is scheduled to roll out before the end of 2015.

Airbus’ Runway Overrun Prevention System (ROPS) certified by EASA on A330 Family

Airbus has achieved EASA certification of its innovative Runway Overrun Prevention System (ROPS) technology on A330 Family aircraft. This on-board cockpit technology, which Airbus has pioneered over several years, is now certified and available on all Airbus Families. ROPS is an alerting system which reduces exposure to runway overrun risk, and if necessary, provides active protection. Korean Air will become the first A330 operator to implement ROPS on its A330s in service in the coming months. This EASA certification of ROPS on the A330 marks a key milestone in making ROPS available for line-fit and retrofit to all Airbus models. ROPS was first approved by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on the A380 in October 2009 and to date is cur-rently in service or ordered on most of the A380 fleet. ROPS is also part of the A350 XWB’s basic configuration, and in August 2013 was also certified for the A320 Family.

Proceeds from the sale are ex-pected to be used to fund additional share re-purchase to offset the earnings impact related to the sale. “We are very pleased to announce this transaction,” said UTC President and Chief Executive Officer Gregory Hayes. “Exiting the helicopter business will allow UTC to better focus on providing high-technology systems and services to the aerospace and building in-dustries and to deliver improved and sustained value to our customers and shareowners.” In addition, UTC’s Board of Directors has author-ized a share repurchase program for up to 75 million shares of the company’s common stock, which would be worth approximately US$8.3bn based on the NySE closing price of UTC shares on July 17th. The new authorization replaces a previous program, approved in February 2013, which was nearing completion. The precise tim-ing and amount of repurchases will be deter-mined based on the company’s evaluation of market conditions and other factors, and the program may be suspended or discontinued at any time.

performance (US$0.27 per share). GAAP earn-ings per share has been adjusted to between US$7.60 and US$7.80, from US$8.10 and US$8.30. Commercial Airplanes second-quarter revenue increased 18% to US$16.9bn on higher delivery volume and mix. Second-quarter oper-ating margin was 7.1%, reflecting the previously announced US$513 million pre-tax charge on the KC-46 Tanker program and the dilutive im-pact of higher 787 and 747 deliveries partially offset by strong performance on production programs. Commercial Airplanes booked 171 net orders during the quarter. Backlog remains strong with nearly 5,700 airplanes valued at US$431bn.

Alcoa completes acquisition of RTI Inter-national Metals

Alcoa, a leader in lightweight metals, has com-pleted the acquisition of RTI International Metals (RTI), a global leader in titanium and specialty metal products and services for the aerospace, defense, energy and medical device markets. The merger, announced on March 9th, became effective on July 22nd. Under the terms of the merger agreement, each share of RTI common stock has been converted into the right to receive 2.8315 shares of Alcoa com-mon stock, plus an amount of cash in lieu of fractional shares of Alcoa common stock. With RTI, Alcoa expands its reach into titanium, the world’s fastest-growing aerospace metal and adds advanced technologies and materials ca-pabilities for greater innovation power in aero-space and beyond. Alcoa expects RTI to con-tribute US$1.2bn in revenue in 2019, up from US$794m that RTI generated in 2014, with 65% of revenues supported by contracts over the next five years. RTI’s profitability is expected to reach 25% EBITDA margin in 2019. Contracts that underpin RTI’s growth include the recently announced contract with Airbus for finished titanium structural supply parts for the new A350-1000 aircraft program. Under the agree-ment, Alcoa will supply titanium parts for the fuselage, among other components.

UAL reports US$1.3bn second-quarter 2015 profit

United Airlines (UAL) has reported second-quarter 2015 net income of US$1.3b exclud-ing US$67m of special items. Including special items, UAL reported second-quarter net in-come of US$1.2b. These results are a record quarterly profit for the company. For the second quarter of 2015, total revenue was US$9.9bn, a decrease of 4% year-over-year. Second-quarter consolidated passenger rev-enue decreased 3.4% to $8.7bn, compared to the same period in 2014. Ancillary revenue

will be continuing operations at Hitco’s current aerostructures facilities in Gardena, California . The addition of the Hitco composites division is anticipated to approximately double Avcorp’s revenues in the immediate term. While not run as a separate accounting unit, the division has been operating at a loss. Consideration for the acquisition of the assets is principally the assumption by Avcorp of current trade paya-bles and ongoing contractual obligations of the aerostructures business of Hitco. Avcorp will receive approximately $42m in cash and pay-ment commitments. SGL will also provide fur-ther in kind supplies or payments of up to $5m over the period to December 31st, 2016. The purchase consideration is subject to custom-ary adjustments based on working capital of Hitco and certain contract pricing adjustments being negotiated by Hitco. Closing is subject to customary conditions, including finalization of other ancillary agreements, third party and regulatory approvals, and is anticipated to oc-cur in Q3 2015.

Southwest Airlines reports record quar-terly profit

Southwest Airlines’ second quarter 2015 total operating revenue was US$5.1bn, a 2.0% in-crease compared with second quarter 2014, largely driven by second quarter 2015 passenger revenue of US$4.9bn. In second quarter 2014, the Company recorded US$47m in additional passenger revenue due to a change to previ-ously recorded estimates of tickets expected to spoil in the future, contributing to the chal-lenging year-over-year comparisons in second quarter 2015 revenue trends. Second quarter 2015 net income was US$608m which included US$83m (net) of unfavorable special items, com-pared with second quarter 2014 net income of US$465m which included US$20m (net) of un-favorable special items. Excluding special items, second quarter 2015 net income was US$691m compared with second quarter 2014 net income, excluding special items, of US$485m.

Boeing reports 33% fall in quarterly profit

Boeing has reported that second-quarter rev-enue increased 11% to US$24.5bn on record commercial deliveries. Second quarter 2015 results included the previously announced US$536mn after-tax charge on the KC-46 Tanker program reflecting higher estimated costs. Net earnings dropped 33% compared to the previ-ous year. Core earnings per share (non-GAAP) guidance for 2015 has been adjusted to be-tween US$7.70 and US$7.90 per share, from US$8.20 and US$8.40, to reflect the impact of the second quarter 2015 KC-46 Tanker charge (US$0.77 per share), partially offset by strong

as machining and sealing processes to protect equipment in the defense, medical, oil & gas and other industrial markets. Esterline an-nounced in September 2014 that it would look to sell certain subsidiaries that were no longer core to the company’s strategic direction. The operations identified at that time, including PA&E, were placed into discontinued opera-tions until the point of sale.

B/E Aerospace reports second quarter 2015 financial results

B/E Aerospace has posted its second quarter 2015 financial results. Second quarter 2015 revenues of US$700.6m increased 5.7% as compared with the prior year period (revenues increased 6.5% adjusting for the impact of un-favorable Euro exchange rates). In addition, revenues from the Company’s Russian custom-ers were negatively impacted by the economic sanctions and the collapse in global oil and gas prices. Excluding sales to Russian customers and adjusting for the negative impact from curren-cy, revenues increased 7.8%. Organic revenue growth was 2.2% and 2.9% on a constant cur-rency basis. Spares revenues which increased at a double-digit rate in the first quarter, grew at a more tepid 3.3% rate in the second quarter. Operating earnings of US$127.3m increased 6.3% and operating margin of 18.2% expanded 10 basis points, each as compared with the prior year period. On a GAAP basis, operating earnings increased 14.1%. Second quarter 2015 net earnings were US$78.9m, representing an increase of 17.1% as compared with the prior year period. On a GAAP basis, net earnings in-creased 26.6%.

Avcorp Industries to acquire Hitco Car-bon Composites business

Avcorp Industries has entered into a defini-tive agreement to acquire the US-based com-posite aerostructures division of a subsidiary of Frankfurt -listed SGL Carbon SE (SGL). The transaction will significantly expand the ca-pabilities of Avcorp in composites and offer a strong platform to grow the profitability of the business. Pursuant to the agreement, Avcorp will purchase the assets of the division of SGL’s subsidiary, Hitco Carbon Composites (Hitco), which produces composite parts for commer-cial and military aerostructures. This includes all inventories, equipment, tooling and other fixed assets, intellectual property, contractual rights, good will, accounts receivable, and work in progress. The Corporation is not acquiring any assets of Hitco’s materials division. Avcorp

Alaska Air Group reports second quarter net income of US$234m

Alaska Air Group reported second quarter 2015 GAAP net income of US$234m compared to $165m in the second quarter of 2014. Exclud-ing the impact of mark-to-market fuel hedge adjustments of US$6m (US$4m after tax), the company reported record adjusted net income of US$230m compared to adjusted net income of US$157m in 2014.

MTU Aero Engines raises forecast in light of half-year results

MTU Aero Engines AG saw its first-half-year revenues rise by 21% to €2,202.0m in 2015 (1-6/14: €1,815.8m). The group’s operating profit grew by 25% to €212.8m (1-6/14: €170.7m), while the EBIT margin increased from 9.4% to 9.7%. Earnings after tax climbed 33% to €147.2m (1-6/14: €111.0m). The greatest in-crease in revenues in the first six months of 2015 was registered by the commercial mainte-nance business, where revenues grew by 32% from €572.9m to €754.2m. The main source of these revenues was the V2500 engine that powers the Airbus A320 family. Revenues in the commercial engine business increased by 21% to €1,251.8m (1-6/14: €1,032.9m). Here, the key revenue drivers alongside the V2500 were the GP7000 engine for the A380 and the GEnx for the Boeing 787 and 747-8. MTU’s commercial maintenance business saw its earnings rise substantially in the first half of 2015, with a 53% increase in adjusted EBIT to €73.5m (1-6/14: €48.0m). The EBIT margin

Boeing to recognize charge for KC-46 tanker program in second quarter

Boeing will recognize a charge on the KC-46 aer-ial refueling tanker program when it announces second-quarter 2015 results on July 22. The after-tax charge of US$536m reflects higher es-timated engineering and manufacturing costs to complete development, certification and initial production of the tanker aircraft, while holding to the program schedule for initial production deliveries in 2017. The KC-46 tanker is being de-signed, developed and tested under a fixed-price Engineering, Manufacturing and Development (EMD) contract. Increased company investment in the program is primarily being driven by re-quired rework on the airplane’s integrated fuel system that was identified as Boeing prepared for and conducted test and verification of that system during the second quarter. The added in-vestment will support the engineering redesign, manufacturing retrofit and qualification and certification of the fuel system changes, and the conclusion of ground and flight testing on the program.

Boeing has released a new forecast showing con-tinued strong demand for commercial airline pi-lots and maintenance technicians as the world’s airlines add 38,000 airplanes to the global fleet over the next 20 years. Boeing’s 2015 Pilot and Technician Outlook projects that between 2015 and 2034, the world will require 558,000 new commercial airline pilots and 609,000 new com-mercial airline maintenance technicians. “To help address this need, Boeing trained last year a record number of pilots and technicians at 17 training campuses around the globe and has in-vested in a comprehensive Pilot Development Program to train early stage pilots to become qualified commercial airline pilots,” said Sherry Carbary, vice president, Boeing Flight Services. “We will continue to increase the amount of training we provide, enabling our customers to satisfy the world’s growing appetite for air travel. The challenge of meeting the global demand for airline professionals will not be solved by one company alone,” Carbary added. “Aircraft manu-facturers, airlines, training equipment manufac-turers, training delivery organizations, regula-tory agencies and educational institutions are all stepping up to meet the increasing need to train and certify pilots and technicians.”

Boeing’s 2015 Outlook projects continued in-creases in pilot demand, up more than 4% com-pared to the 2014 Outlook. For maintenance technicians, demand increased approximately 5%. Overall global demand for these skilled re-sources will be driven by continued economic expansion, resulting in an average requirement for about 28,000 new pilots and more than 30,000 new technicians every year.

These results have allowed us to revise our full-year forecast in the expectation of setting new records once again in 2015,” said Reiner Win-kler, CEO of MTU Aero Engines AG. MTU now foresees revenues of around €4,600m for 2015, instead of the €4,400m predicted at the begin-ning of the year (2014: €3,913.9m). Adjusted EBIT is expected to rise to around €430m (2014: €382.7m) and adjusted net income to around €295m (2014: €253.3m). The corresponding amounts in MTU’s original outlook were €420m for adjusted EBIT and €285m for adjusted net income.
